Wow, that's a really limited list. I'll just add what I am running, here:

  • Solaris
  • Linux - Debian
  • Linux - Slackware
  • OSX
  • HP-UX (yes, seriously)
  • AIX (yes, also seriously)
  • BeOS
  • Windows XP - via bootcamp, for the rare PC gaming jaunts.

I just upgraded to Windows 7 and I'm finding a major performance increase across the board. Windows is more like OS X than ever.

Who would call someone using OSX an elitist? Windows is both faster and more expensive than OSX, it should be the other way around if anything.

Who the hell only runs one OS these days, anyway? Why choose? Even with one computer, you could dual-boot.

People with Windows run only one OS because that's the only one they need. Mac users need Boot Camp in order to make their computers useful (and even then will be limited by their outdated hardware).

OSX is cheaper than Windows, but it only runs (officially) on Apple hardware, which is more expensive, even if you buy pre-built. (Or at least perceived to be.  One of the guys at works prefers Mac, and insists that, for the power, Macs cost about as much, say, Dells.  It's just that Apple only sells higher end equipment, and Dell, Toshiba, etc. all sell a wider range of hardware.)

As for the question, I run Ubuntu 9.10 on my laptop, which has an XP partition as well that I almost never use, though I plan to start using it when I want to work from home.  I also have another, slightly better laptop running Vista, which I use for old games (not very powerful, but it runs Torment and Baldur's Gate just fine).  And I've been running Windows 7 Ultimate at work for the last couple of weeks (XP before that).

You should educate that person. Dell is already ~x2 overpriced, Apple is about another ~x2 overpriced on top of that. Also, Apple sells low end equipment, even compared to Dell. Their absolute newest stuff is from 2-3 years ago. Dell (Alienware) at least provides current tech, but just at bloated prices.

Does anyone know if its worth upgrading to Snow Leopard on a Macbook Pro? I've heard that it sucks all the battery life.

I honestly have no idea, but a Mac forum will be a really good place to find that out.  Mac users are very honest about computer performance.  I only change when my friend who runs a Mac shop tells me it is a good time to do so.

Just upgrade. The new functions are great and Apple have probably patched any battery issues by now.
