I'm looking to get into an old D&D game. I got some D&D collection with a bunch of REALLY old games a couple years back (Menzoberranzan, Dungeon Hack, etc.)  But now I'm looking to get into a slightly more updated one.  To be honest, I probably will only play one of these - so don't give me a long list of what order I should play them in. For example - if Baldur's Gate 2 is better, I'd rather play that then go back to part 1, even if some story elements make that hard. So, recommend away, and explain yourself!

Well, I've truthfully only played NWN, so that's what I voted for. I recall having a blast with that game.

    I'd probably go with Baldur's Gate 2.

I would recommend any except nwn2.

If I could only pick one it would be NWN... the single player is a little less enjoyable than the others, but with the expansions it now comes packaged with you'll have 3 campaigns, lots of races and all the classes up to lvl 40.  Last time I checked the online community is pretty good still too, with loads of handmade persistant worlds to mess around in.  It has the best value of all the choices.

If I could add one to the list, Planescape: Torment is amazing.

    NWN2 or BG2
NWN2 is a little better though.

Stay away from Neverwinter Nights 2, it's trash. You should try the Baldur's Gate series as well as the original Neverwinter Nights.

Anyone played Icewind Dale games? I read the books and loved them, but I realize that might not be the best reason to get the games.

I'm currently playing through Baldur's Gate II for the first time but after playing Neverwinter it's kind of hard to handle; the interface just feels so archaic. But I got used to Fallout 2 so we'll see how it goes.

the 2's are almosy always better.  While i would say you should start with BG 1, the second is better.  as for the icewind dale games there more just mission after mission and lacking story.  if you don't care and just want to run around killing stuff collecting booty icewinds can be fun.

Neverwinter Nights is great, and the community was still going strong about two weeks ago.

Thanks for the help ya'll. I just ordered a copy of Baldur's Gate 2, and I'm looking forward to getting into it. I still should try Icewind Dale 2 some day as well. Dave Snider (sp?) wrote a glowing review I found and it sounds pretty good, although lacking in story.
