I was just thinking the other day of if it's really worth to buy a expensive graphics card for long term use (2-3 years). So theoretically speaking, lets say that I decide to buy a nVIDIA GTX 690(s) tomorrow so to play all of my games from now to until a few years at rather high settings. Since technology is changing every day at an alarming rate, there will be more advanced features being implemented as we more forward.
This card runs on a DirectX 11 hardware spec. How many years from now do you think until DirectX 12 will be out? Probably 2-3 at most. The main point is, even though this card will still have no problems playing the latest and greatest games in the future (lower settings this time around) and DX 12 hits the market as a requirement for the minimum specs: This graphics card that I busted an arm n' nut to get 2-3 years ago will be as good as going into the trash anyways since it does not have DX 12. It will cease to function on the mainstream level.
What are your thoughts on this?
