WTF happened to my MB?

#1 Edited by MAN_FLANNEL (2427 posts) - 1 year, 3 months ago

Hey guys. Maybe you seen my other thread, but I just got a new laptop cause my old one died. I had just gotten a new battery and power supply for the old one (both were worn out, it was 3 years old), and it was working fine for the 2 days (probably 10 hrs of being on). Anyways, the thing shut off (like if you would unplug it without the battery in). It was smoking out of a bottom vent and it smelled bad. That's about all I can tell you as I was skunk drunk at the time and was throwing up 15 minutes later >_>. Pretty sure my MB is fried, but my question is, what may have caused it? Is it possible the power supply or battery did it? I know shit all about computer so bear with me, and sorry for crappy web cam pics.

The MB!
Close up of last image. This thing is all burnt and melted
This is on the other side on top of the card reader. Also burnt up.
I don't know if this helps

I cant see its too blury. is your power supply the correct voltage for your computer, is it too powerfull?

@Dagbiker: yeah sorry. lighting in the room isn't too good. The power supply was the correct voltage and amps as the oem one. The first black thing is all melted and burnt, with the second one only being black. I'll try to find a picture of the MB online to show the parts.

Could be the chipset or the graphic chip. I doubt the power supply did that if you bought one with the correct voltage. At this point, if you can't turn on your laptop, then you're fucked. Go buy a new one.

EDIT: Unless you have some bad ass soldering skills. Then you can buy laptop that's identical to this one that's already fucked up and take the chip out of that motherboard.

This is what I'd advise too.

If you don't know computers, even if you had badass soldering skills, I'm not sure you'd really be able to do much that would be worth your while. After the cost of getting a replacement chip (which probably means eBay-ing an identical laptop) and gambling with trying to reassemble it, you're still best off putting the money to a new laptop (preferably a Lenovo ThinkPad).

I already bought a new laptop. I changed the OP, so hopefully it's less confusing. I just took the old one apart to see if it was salvageable (and to see if I should keep the battery/power supply incase I fix it later). As soon as I saw that the MB was fucked, I new it was junk. I wonder if I could get any money out of it for parts.

Ah, in that case, yeah, salvage everything in it, like the RAM, CPU and stuff. Even if it's obsolete crap at the end of the day, you never know when it'll come in useful or how much it'll fetch on the internet.

Last year, I took apart an old Pentium 3 PC, which had the whole "Slot 1" cartridge assembly. Little did I know that 4 months later, my friend would approach me and ask for it, since his cheap office wouldn't buy a new PC, instead choosing to (attempt to) restore an ancient Windows 2000 box.

It looks a bit blurry but I think it's bigfoot.

Microwave it on high for two minutes. Et Voila! A funky beer coaster!
