If you are using Windows 7, go to the start menu, right click, go properties, check use small icons, then select Combine when taskbar is full, from Taskbar buttons.

(use small icons is just my preference, it looks great with regular size too).

Am I the only one who thinks that this should be how it works by default? I've heard plenty of people complaining that they don't like the way that 7 immediately makes things in the taskbar a click or 2 slower to access.

Also, does the fact that I only discovered this after having the Windows 7 RC for over 5 months make me an idiot?

I like "Always combine, hide labels" (default) better.

me too, you get used to Win7 stacking the windows together, combined with the mouseover quickview thingy it really is the way to go.

and to the forum poster, yes you should have found this preference long ago.
