The long awaited sequel to tournament #3, I've decided to hold #4 a week earlier than a month since last time 'cause a month is kinda long, isn't it? So tournament's scheduled to take place on the weekend of October 27-28. Tournament's just for PS3 folk, like the title of the thread indicates.

Past Tournament Champions

Rules:

  • The tournament will be played in a double elimination format, so players will need to lose a match twice to be eliminated.
  • Matches will be best 2 out of 3 rounds for 99 seconds each round. Winner will be best 2 out of 3 matches.
  • Semi-finals (Losers and Winners bracket) and grand finals will be best 2 out of 3 rounds for 99 seconds each round. Winner will be best 3 out of 5 matches.
  • A player that loses a match is allowed to switch characters, however a player who wins must choose the same character as his previous match.
  • If a player drops during a round, it is up to the opponent to decide if he agrees to do a rematch or not.
  • Saving a replay of your matches is recommended, because if there is a dispute between two players as to who actually won and no one provides proof, I'll have to disqualify both of the players for the sake of fairness.

How to sign up

Post:

PSN ID:

*****

Sign-ups will be on Challonge like last time. This is to prevent people who say they'll be participating in the tourney but don't show up. You'll need a Challonge account to do this, so sign up for one here if you don't have one. Try to name your Challonge account as closely as you can to your GB username to avoid confusion.

*****

Reason I'm requiring Challonge accounts is because players will be able to report the results of their matches themselves instead of having to constantly update the brackets myself.

When

Tournament starts on Saturday, October 27th and ends on Sunday, October 28th. The tournament should start at 12:00 PM EDT like the previous times.

Official Challonge sign-ups will be open on October 26th from 5:00 PM EDT / 2:00 PM PDT to October 27th, 12:00 PM EDT / 9:00 AM PDT. So players should arrive and sign up on the page before the limit or else they won't be included in the bracket and won't be able to participate in the tournament. Signing up doesn't take long to do at all, so this shouldn't be a problem.

The following times are when rounds should be finished by:

Phase 1 (Starts on October 27)

Round 1: .....................W: 10:00 PM EDT / 7:00 PM PDT

...................................L: 11:00 PM EDT / 8:00 PM PDT

Round 2: .....................W: 11:00 PM EDT / 8:00 PM PDT

...................................L: 6:00 PM EDT / 3:00 PM PDT (October 28)

Phase 2 (Starts on October 28)

Round 3: .....................W: 5:00 PM EDT / 2:00 PM PDT

...................................L: 6:00 PM EDT / 3:00 PM PDT

Round 4: .....................W: 6:00 PM EDT / 3:00 PM PDT

....................................L: 7:00 PM EDT / 4:00 PM PDT

Semi-Finals: ......................W: 7:00 PM EDT / 4:00 PM PDT

....................................L: 8:00 PM EDT / 5:00 PM PDT

Grand Finals: ............................. 9:00 PM EDT / 6:00 PM PDT

Shoot, that's this weekend! I'm in. I hope I can take care of what I have to do at work to make it.

PSN: RuriKidA

As for the season idea, I'm in favor for the idea. It'll keep the P4A folks already active keep the game going and may attract new folks in, or those who keep missing out/DQ-ing on the tourneys to be involved. Is there going to be certain scheduled day(s) for the season to take place, or will it be the initiative of the community to come in and say, let's do a battle on this date?

Oh, might want to update some of the dates under the "When" section.

#9 Posted by FluxWaveZ (17877 posts) - 7 months, 3 days ago

@IrrelevantJohn: @InfiniteSpark: Yeah, this one's on shorter notice than the others. If we're going to have seasons, I want season 1 to start as of the first weekend in November.

Thanks, managed to miss a bunch of dates. I'll also need to look over the schedule times later, too.

I was thinking that ranbats would take place on a weekly basis, so I was thinking something like every weekend where the round-robin brackets are posted and people do their matches.

#10 Posted by Liquidus (849 posts) - 7 months, 3 days ago

I'm in again. Been actually playing way more matches between the last tourny and this one, so I should(hopefully) put up a better fight than last time. And I like the round-robin matches idea, anything that gives me an excuse to keep playing this game.

#11 Posted by Phatmac (5264 posts) - 7 months, 3 days ago

I'll try to make it to my match this time PSN: Blazeluminos

#12 Posted by InfiniteSpark (211 posts) - 7 months, 3 days ago

@FluxWaveZ: Sounds good having the weekly season battles held over the weekends. I'll play for the fun in battling other folks here even if I get my butt whooped constantly.

Yeah, sure, what the hell. I'm going to stop trying to take these as a tournament and more as a chance to learn. Learning fighting games is fucking hard though.

Edit - Also, the season idea sounds good if enough people are into it. It'd be great to have more reason to play and a more active community.

The idea of the ranbats sounds very cool (kinda like wnf or something?), I'll definitly participate whenever I can, also going to bring a friend into this. How would it be though? A point like system?

EDIT: Will there be a team tourney again?

#18 Posted by FluxWaveZ (17877 posts) - 7 months, 2 days ago

@MDYu said:

Yeah. Something like +2 points for each win, +1 point for a tie and -1 points for a loss. Again, I'm not very familiar with the round-robin format so it's something I'd have to look into, but the final result should approximate that.

Pretty excited to watch another P4A tournament. I missed the last one because I was busy that weekend. Shame that the start overlaps with the end of the Tested marathon.

Oh, that's right! Well, it shouldn't be hard for people to get their matches in and then resume watching the Octoberkast if they want to. Totally forgot that started this Friday.

Though I'm not up for a tournament this weekend (XCOM having atrophied my already abysmal Elizabeth), I just wanted to post to comment on the ranbat idea. That's something that could be really cool! I've been looking for an excuse to play this game more, and a season of organized play sounds appealing.

Well, I'm out this time.

I'll be busy this weekend and I'm quite sick of tournies for now. Had the GB P4A tourney #3 3 weeks ago, organized a GameFAQs P4A tourney 2 weeks ago, and went to the SF25th tourney last weekend.

But anyways, good luck and have fun guys!

By the way, if you guys want, let's organize a GameFAQs vs GiantBomb P4A tourney if we ever find the time.

Cool, so something like a Giant Bomb P4A league is probably going to replace these tournaments in the near future.

#28 Posted by IrrelevantJohn (521 posts) - 7 months, 19 hours ago

@FluxWaveZ: I know this is late but I didn't read the bottom of the post :P.

Well I think the round-robin style kind of matches would be great since it would even out the chances for everyone involved. This will also give us the chance to actually play against everyone.

I prefer tournaments to ranbats if given a choice between one or the other exclusively.

With that said no reason we can't have both. I could take over running the occasional tourny if you want to stop in favor of a league Flux.

I agree with Gravitypenguin on this one. I don't necessary want a Round Robin style thing. Also when it comes to it, since we have issues already getting people that signed up to be on the same time and playing, I'm not so sure we can fully do one. Just a thought though, feel free to disagree.

#33 Posted by FluxWaveZ (17877 posts) - 7 months, 1 hour ago

@Xomero: Well, I know most people during our tournaments have been on at the same time except for certain people who we often have to wait on, so that's not a worry. Most people seem to like the idea and it will get people playing more plus people will be able to get more matches in as opposed to tournaments, so it's an idea I'm still thinking of pursuing.

I'm surprised so many people are still playing Persona 4 arena on giantbomb.

#40 Posted by FluxWaveZ (17877 posts) - 6 months, 28 days ago

@ImmortalSaiyan: Less people participating in the tournaments over time, but there's still a dedicated community of players. You can compare the current bracket to the original 2 months ago and check the drop-off.

While that is a massive drop off at least there are still dedicated players. In fact it's the biggest last lasting fighting community on giantbomb i've seen since Street Fighter 4.

Yeah. I was part of the SFIV community and things got slow relatively quick, at least on the 360 side. Regular events are important to keep things going and the GB P4A league coming up soon might revitalize things.

We have a 1st place prize, added to the OP.

Congratulations to the winner of the 4th GB P4A PS3 tournament:

  1. FluxWaveZ
  2. MDYu
  3. aznjon09

Rest of the results are here.

These tourneys should just be called the Flux cup at some point. Congrats.

Also, so glad I finally made top 3 lol and I'll beat ya for the tourney Flux someday. Thanks for those awesome finals
