Holy crap, that neither looks comfortable to wear nor flattering. That said, it's Japan, and the gaming market has never been particularly welcoming to women. Not that all women object to this, but I dare you to grab a random woman and try to get her to play this game with those costumes enabled. Odds will not be in your favor.

I guess I found the 'going in to the Television World to summon otherworldly demons to do my bidding' part to be so far removed from reality that I didn't spend too much time rationalizing it. I totally see why Naoto's ass crack bothers you but it doesn't even register to me, sorry.

It's tacky. Those outfit are extremely tacky. Fanservice that looks good is one thing, Fanservice that just putting a character into a rather ugly revealing outfit is tacky.

@mutha3: It's not that the pictures in the OP were censored, it's the pictures in that thread that have had their brightness/contrast adjusted so you can see more. You can tell it by looking at the tiles on the wall in "uncensored" versions.

Anyhow, my take on it is just cultural differences and Japan being Japan. The video game and anime industries over there are very much into pandering to the lowest common denominator in the effort to wring out all the sweet otaku cash they can. It's also worth noting that age of consent in Japan is 13, if I recall correctly.

Oh. I assumed it'd be this from the start so I guess I have different expectations for what is essentially a Special Edition of a game made in Japan. I can't think of a re-release of a Japanese game that actually got meaningful new content, aside from FES I guess but that was forever ago.

I am definitely not the intended audience for the stuff, but I don't think the costumes are really much worse than the Battle Panties in Persona 3, which never got more from me than a brief eyeroll. I'd say the bath scene is pushing it a bit more than I'd care to see, but I don't find it offensive -- it is what it is, and this sort of thing is hardly new.

Those secret agent suits make all of it worth it.

Naoto's outfit goes entirely against her reverse trap charm. I am emphatically against it!

I hate it. But it's not hurting anything, other than making the series look desperate where it really doesn't need to. But, easy titillation = easy money, so there we go.

It seems like they're just covering all the bases. There's fanservice for the guys, fanservice for the girls (if they animated Kanji in a bathing suit, everyone wins), and a bunch of other bizarre costume choices that seem like they basically just included everything they thought of. I don't have a real problem with it.

Well eh, the scene seems incredibly censored to me so whatever. They're somewhat objectifying their characters sure but that's just always been less of an issue in Japan anyway, people in US etc tend to be way more knee-jerky to such material. Imo if the scene wasn't within the context of a bathhouse it would be worth getting mad about but if they feel a bit of fan service will help sell more copies then that's their business decision.

Also before anyone replies with "but omg dood they're not even 18 blah blah" they're cartoon characters and the game isn't exactly trying to be realistic in other respects so it shouldn't be treated as such. Its just dumb and pandering like any anime with such things, if its that offensive to you don't buy the game or send a formal complaint to Atlas.

Yea the content in question is very disappointing. It just lowers the quality of the whole thing in my opinion as it never needed it, does nothing for the story from the looks of it and is obviously there to get more of that perverted otaku money that is lucrative to all who are interested. I don't think they had much choice though in its inclusion though let's be honest (likely dictated more by money or the fans than higher-ups though I'm speculating really), because adding fanservice in any anime-based product is a "damned if you do, damned if you don't" kind of thing these days. Damned if you do by people who are morally against it or just wish for content that doesn't rely on the "sex sells even for underage girls" thing that dominates most anime nowadays. Damned if you don't by the audience that likes or even disturbingly craves such things and will pay handsomely for it and are unfortunately a very reliable source of revenue for a good chunk of anime studios.
