Concepts

2D

Sure, these days have almost every game sporting the newfangled 3D, but way back when, everyone had to live with plain old 2D. 2D, or two dimensions, limit the game to scrolling backgrounds, but some games even now make use of this basic concept.
Achievements

Achievements are extra challenges added into video games that sometimes carry a point value or unlock bonus material, and are sometimes solely for bragging rights.
Adultery

The act of a married person engaging in a sexual relationship with someone other than his or her own spouse. The adulterous relationship may or may not include feelings of true love.
Agents

You have good agents, like Elite Beat Agents and you have bad agents, like agent Smith.
Air Dash

A quick burst of speed either forward or backward whilst in the air.
Air Manipulation

An innate ability to control the behavior and direction of the air. This ability can also be used to create and control bursts of wind.
All-out Attack

A special attack seen in the Persona series where the entire party will strike all enemies on the field after they've been knocked down.
Alter Ego

A person leading a double life. This character has more than one way in which they present themselves to the world.
Alternate Costumes

Characters either begin with multiple outfits, unlock them through play, or purchase them as in-game items. These costumes are sometimes integral to play.
Alternate Game Over Screen

Games that feature more than one style of Game Over screen. Alternate Game Over screens are often used when the player loses in specific ways.
Alternate Reality

Alternate realities are worlds that exists next to, in parallel of, or in place of our own.
Ambient Music

This term describes games that make use of music that is mainly instrumental, featuring electronics, inconsistent beat and intended create a relaxing or peaceful atmosphere or mood.
Amnesia

An often used plot device where the main character wakes up and has lost all their memories. The game usually centers around getting your memory back or uncovering the events that lead to your confusion.
Ancient Curse

A dark power that is usually the cause for the world's strife. The curse can only be broken after the protagonist (or band of protagonists) defeats several dangerous trials.
Androgyny

When someone is androgynous, they have a mix of masculine and feminine aspects, or they have the appearance of being in between male and female. A common aesthetic in Japanese media and games.
Android

Artificial life-forms ("robots") specifically designed to mimic the appearance of human beings. Although this is a male-specific term, with female-looking machines actually being "gynoids", the term "android" is generally used universally in video games.
Angel

The lowest of all the angelic orders, angels are tasked with delivering God's messages to humans in addition to being personal guardians. Angel has also become a generic term for any such kind of heavenly being.
Antagonist

The character or group most responsible for thwarting the player's progress through a game. Differs from a boss insofar as the player may not directly interact with the antagonist.
Anthropomorphism

Anthropomorphism is the concept of an object, concept or character that has human qualities or traits, such as speech, a level of intelligence similar or higher than a human's and self consciousness. "Anthro" means "of human" and related to the concept of humanity.
Apathy Syndrome

Apathy Syndrome is a mysterious condition that has been affecting Gekkoukan High students and other residents of Tatsumi Port Island.
Append Disc

Append Discs are used by swapping it with the main disc of the game. Append discs were mainly used by early Japanese rhythm games.
Archangel

The second of the orders of angels, archangels are tasked with strengthening the faith of mankind, heralding good news, and delivering prophecy to humans though the lower order of guardian angels. This order sometimes includes named angels like Michael and Gabriel, but they can also be seen as distinct.
Artificial Intelligence

Artificial Intelligence, or AI, commonly refers to the programmed behaviors of NPCs in a game, whether it's the fact that a soldier takes cover behind a wall in Gears of War, or that townspeople cheer upon your arrival to their village in Fable.
Athlete

Athletes are people that play sports, anything from baseball to football to track and field. Athletes in video games typically give gamers a chance to hit that home run or kick the winning goal that normally would take years of training to do.
Audio Logs

Audio logs are short voice recordings that a player comes across within a game that helps inform the player of the game's story and characters.
Axe Kick

A downward kick occasionally combined with a jump. The Pumphrey Brothers favorite kick. It is used to crack open crates.
Back Attack

Attacking the opponent when he is not aware of you granting you the first strike in a fight.
Backtracking

Backtracking is the act of navigating through previously explored areas, usually for the purpose of progressing in an objective-based adventure game. Players who are lost may also backtrack to reorient themselves.
Bakeneko

A type of feline monster from Japanese folklore.
Battle Screen

A mechanic used mainly in Japanese RPGs of both the action and turn-based variety.
