Mommy, why couldn't they just use a Phoenix Down on Aeris?

Don't worry Jeff, it blew my mind too.

Phoenix Down.

Holy shit why did I never think of that before the Bombcast?

Signed, I guess?

I didn't really catch it either. Mostly because "down" is a really specific way of saying "feather", and is a way not typically used unless you're talking about a type of pillow.

#6 Posted by onimonkii (2314 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

46:35 in this week's Bombcast, they're talking about Phoenix Down in FFXIII and how it's referred to as a "pile of feathers".

Phoenix Down. I never made the connection myself either.

My mind is not totally blown.

#8 Posted by Drebin_893 (2804 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

I had the exact same reaction as Jeff at the exact same time as he did. My mind was just completely broken.

#9 Posted by Meowayne (6084 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

I still don't get it. What else would a phoenix down be than a feather?

#10 Posted by Meowayne (6084 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

As far as I recall, the revive animation of Final Fantasies VIII, IX and X even involves feathers.

#11 Posted by onimonkii (2314 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

I don't know! I thought it was just some weird mistranslated term for like a reraise/resurrect or something before, never really put a whole lot of thought into it.

'Down' is another word for feathers. Although it usually relates to those in pillows.

Wait, people never realized that the image used for Phoenix Down's was a Feather?

I never made the connection with the name though, touché, Square.

Most people (Including me) made an assumption it was referring to the characters state of being downed.

Truthfully, I'm a little dissapointed in Jeff and Ryan.

Being that Final Fantasy VII was the only FF I played before XIII and even then, not all that much of it I can't say I made the connection because I hadn't thought about it that much. But as soon as I heard it I was like of course it is whats the big deal. My mind was hardly blown.

Same here. I though it was just a language barrier thing, when in reality, the Japanese obviously have a superior grasp of the English language.

I'm on the same boat. Now it totally makes sense that in the FF "multi"-verse (insert "The One" reference here ) that they use the feathers from the "down" of a phoenix to revive a person. It's a better sounding name than "Phoenix Feather", at least.

#27 Posted by Rmack (1000 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

I always thought it was a statement! As in, We have a Phoenix DOWN. It is DOWN!

Holy shit.

Totally blew my mind away too. I always thought of it being a potion, and the name Phoenix Down being kind of an engrish way to elude to the rising/rebirth of a phoenix.

#31 Posted by gike987 (1577 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

The animation for using Phoenix Down in some of the games is the characters throwing feathers. I thought it was pretty obvious.

#32 Posted by Mowgers (365 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

Yeah. Feathers. Though, I like to think of it as a command, if you take phoenix as a euphemism for 'get off your ass'.
"Phoenix, down?"

#33 Posted by Milkman (14021 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

I always thought this was really obvious. I was way surprised that Jeff and Ryan hadn't realized this.

I just thought it was a play on words (e.g. Rising Phoenix).  Never knew that 'down' was another word for feathers... even after Jeff brought it up on the podcast.

I think that might actually just refer to a Black Hawk Helicopter being out of commission, but I'm not sure.

My eyes have been opened! Makes me wonder what other things I haven't picked up on.

#38 Posted by ahoodedfigure (4229 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

In the beginning I thought it was just another translation oddity.  I forget how I figured that out, exactly, but I guess since I'm a fan of the mythological phoenix, it sorta clicked.

#39 Posted by Daryl (1781 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

What is going on?

#40 Posted by iizcallum (600 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

Haha I just thought it was a fancy name for 'Life potion' when I played VII, but I kinda figured when I got to that bit at Mt Corel where you look in that nest and there's loads of phoenix feathers (baby phoenixes? Can't remember...), and you get a load of phoenix downs. I put two and two together then.

#41 Posted by TheMustacheHero (6654 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

They mean down as in a down pillow, with feathers in it.

Phoenix Down, like Goose Down would be feathers of that animal, meaning a phoenix's feathers.

You know what's truly shocking? Vinny was actually Rich Gallup all along!

I'm stupid and I haven't played FFXIII  so I don't get what that means.

#47 Posted by JackSukeru (5154 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

Ha! I can simply blame my own failure to realize this on not being a native english speaker, thus failing to make the connection between "feathers" and "down" before thinking it through.

#48 Posted by Kraznor (1504 posts) - 3 years, 2 months ago

I never thought of it either, and I've been playing Final Fantasy games for the better part of a decade. I do feel like an idiot now, but nice to see I'm not alone.
