Overview
Pikachu is an Electric Mouse Pokémon. Pikachu became the mascot of the Pokémon franchise after a Pikachu was given to Ash in the very first episode of the Anime series by Professor Oak.
As an electric Pokémon, Pikachu is particularly strong against Water and Flying-type Pokémon, its electric moves doing twice the normal damage to these types. However, it is completely ineffective against Ground types (it causes no damage against them, and their moves do twice the normal damage to it). Also, steel-type and flying-type moves only do half of their normal damage to Pikachu.
At the beginning of Pokémon Yellow: Special Pikachu Edition the player is given a Pikachu which acts as their first (starter) Pokémon and follows them around on their journey. Throughout the series of Pokémon RPGs Pikachu has evolved into Raichu when exposed to a Thunderstone and from Pokémon Gold, Silver and Crystal versions onward it has evolved from Pichu.
Alternatively, wild Pikachu can be caught in some other Pokémon titles. Pikachu uses powerful electric attacks like Thundershock, Thunderbolt and Thunderwave that can paralyze its opponents.
Evolution
Using a Thunderstone causes a Pikachu to evolve into a Raichu at any level. However, in Pokémon Yellow, he will refuse to evolve into Raichu, even if you try to use a Thunderstone (Unless you trade your Pikachu to another version).
In the Gold and Silver Version, it was discovered that Pikachu is the evolved form of Pichu, which evolves into Pikachu when its happiness level is high enough, and loves its trainer. To evolve your Pichu into a Pikachu, you must raise its happiness level to its full capacity (220 pts.), and then train it one level.
Data
Physiology
Pikachu is meant to resemble a mouse, but made yellow due to it being an electric type. It has two fair sized ears, that both end in black tips. It has two brown stripes on its back. It has two red cheeks, which have often been seen sparking when Pikachu is angry. Whether it's tail has "dent" in it depends on its gender. Male Pikachu do not have this V shaped "dent", whereas females do. Its tail resembles that of a lightning bolt.
