The end is nigh for the PlayStation 2.

Sony stops shipping PlayStation 2 in Japan nearly 13 years after launch
Sony will no longer ship the PlayStation 2 to Japanese retailers, according to Famitsu. At over 150 million units sold worldwide since its launch in Japan on March 4th, 2000, the PS2 is the most popular home console of all time by some distance, and has demonstrated impressive staying power. It still sees occasional new software releases in Japan, despite the fact that its successor, the PlayStation 3, was released back in 2006, and a fourth home system from Sony is expected to make an appearance in 2013. There's no word on whether Sony plans to stop sales in other regions around the world, but it's clear that this marks the beginning of the end for what is arguably the video game world's most venerable console.

I've had a lot of good memories with the PS2. There's a reason it's the best selling console of all time.

I think I'm going to buy one again. I still need to play through Persona 3 and 4.

The PSP also seems to still have traction in Japan, from what I remember. Is it something Sony's doing, or is it something about Japanese gaming culture, or what?

It plays the Monster Hunter.

Man, part of me misses the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube era. Something charming about being the last not always-online systems.

It had a helluva run.

Whenever a product I love goes out of production, I get the urge to buy two or three of them to keep in storage, so that I will always have one.

The PS2 has been refined and perfected down to the point where even my slim PS2 is outdated ( the newest ones have INTERNAL power supplies, no external power brick necessary!) and I still use it to the point where it has its own separate monitor dedicated to it on my desk.

Playstation 2 uber alles.

It's a great piracy machine.

Weirdly enough like a 1/4 of my PS2 collection was bought during this generation. That system has one helluva library -- it just never ends!

Considering the number of PS2s already out there in the stores or in homes, this isn't that bad due to how easy it is to get one.

Actually, I just remembered that Thracia 776 was released in 1999, so it's probably the latter.

The PS2 is the best console.

I was just thinking about picking up a PS2 the other day, actually.. i have a pretty decent game collection but my Fat PS2 finally took a dive a couple years ago.

Could be fun to start a new collection, too!

Makes me want to go buy a PS2 right now just for the sake of it.

The PS2 will never die. There are still some PS2 games that I still want to get around to.

Kinda crazy how long of a shelf life the PS2 had, at least in Japan. I wonder if the PS3 will be the same way?

Man, the PS2 was awesome!

Gave birth to some great franchises and had the best sequels to established franchises.

I guess this means the Xbox 360 can finally outsell something in Japan.

I'd love to own one of the last "fresh" PS2s to be made.
