I remember reading something on a German website a while back that said that Sony was planning on releasing full software PS2 emulation for the 40GB PS3s. The article also stated that this update should be introduced in the fall. Have any of you heard anything different?

    To paraphrase sony,

'if you want to play ps2 games buy/play them on a playstation 2'

Although I do think  it will happen, it won't happen directly from sony. Maybe homebrew ps3 equivalent or emulation software provided with a linux os install? I heard of the article but that was a rumor I think that never panned out, shortly after sony said fat chance on BC emulation for consoles.

You're an idiot! Of course it would only be for the 40GB cause they are the only PS3s that aren't BC or b-a-c-k-w-a-r-d-s c-o-m-p-a-t-i-b-l-e. Those big words mean that you can play the old games on the new console. You got it?

There are actually quite a few facts about possible software BC that either mean nothing and are a bunch of coincidences, or add up to the fact it will be coming this September. First, the reduction of the PS3 to one SKU worldwide, which means no hardware / part-hardware BC for any territory. Second, the new 80 GB PS3 conveniently comes out at the same time the German site said the software BC should be coming out.

There is also the nature of the 80GB SKU in the U.S. It was released fairly quickly with respect to the 60/20 GB versions, but it already emulated the emotion engine, to a fair degree of accuracy. And unless I'm incorrect, I believe the emotion engine to be the more complex part of the PS2. Also, Sony supposedly filled a bunch of emulation positions a couple years back.

All this adds up to be a giant conspiracy theory, or it means that Sony has been in development of a PS2 emulator for some time, finished enough of it to put it in the 80GB SKU and reduce costs, and is now preparing to release it in mass as the only form of PS2 emulation available.

That would be so cool. I wouldn't worry about my 60GB so much when it's acting weird. I love playing PS2 games on my HDTV, upscaled.

I highly doubt this will happen. Jack Tretton has already stated his disappointment with the fact that Sony is moving away from backwards capability in the PS3. If anything, I believe Sony wants to eventually make PS1 and PS2 titles available for download in all regions.

I know what Tretton said, but I prefer to live in the delusion that he was referring to hardware backward compatibility .....

I agree that they will probably eventually make PS2 games available for download on the PS Store, but then you have to repurchase any game you want to play. And there isn't even the guarantee that your games will be available ...

    It won't happen.

    You have my word :D

It's the hardware that's the problem. If it was simply the software they needed to change, then why the hell would they have taken out BC from the beginning?

They removed BC through the emotion chip to reduce costs.

Illusions usually are good, too bad those don't come true. :(

I honestly do not understand what is keeping Sony from releasing more PS1/PS2 titles for download. I think they could be making a huge profit from all the titles they could make available. Especially rare games that are hard to find nowadays, I really think they'd be selling a huge amount.

It's not because of the PS2 being out or not, it just adds unnecessary money to the system. Once PS2 DOES die, by that time I am sure they will already have software emulation/

I tend to think it has everything to do with the PS2 being out. They don't want to lose potential sales of a system they're still making money on. While introducing BC to the 40GB PS3 might move more PS3 hardware, they are still losing money on that system, so it would be counter-productive for them to encourage its sale while reducing sales of PS2s.

If Sony is really serious about completely dropping BC.. then they will wait in till next-next-gen or when the PS2 dies out... by the time that does happen I can see the PS3 being slimmed down and more price cuts.
On an unrelated note, I resented Sony for dropping BC but now that I think of it it's better for them as a company... They give people the incentive to buy PS2s while dropping the PS3 by 100$... it's a win win for them

That's what they did in the 80GB, but Tretton said that there is pretty much zero cost difference to add in the graphics synthesizer. So they didn't remove BC for cost reductions.

As some other people mentioned, the most likely reason they took BC out of the 40GB version was to try and keep the PS2 alive. With BC in the PS3, the PS3 and the PS2 were competing against each other, which wasn't a good thing for Sony.

I'm hoping there will be software emulation whenever firmware 3.0  (i figure they would change the number for such an important update)  comes out, but even if they are developing it, it will take quite some time to work out all the bugs.

No, the emulation in the systems do cost, just not the software emulations.

Software will be out there eventually to DL which can ad it.

Maybe after the 10 year life cycle of PS2 is up? Or maybe when they release a PS3 Slim? Maybe they could do something once the PS3 productions costs become low enough to turn a profit on hardware sales. I think enough people are asking for it for them to consider adding it in.

If not this year, I believe some type of firmware BC will be out by the end of next year. The PS2 is winding down, it sells less and less every week and Sony knows it.

They switched to software BC for the PS1 in the current PS2, I see no reason why they can't do the same for the PS2 on the PS3. I mean after all, if the dudes at pcsx2.net can get a working PS2 emulator up and running, there is no reason at all why Sony can't.
