Can the Playstation 3 really upscale?

I keep hearing left and right that the PS3 can't upscale and never will be able to because of a hardware problem. Having no background in electronic engineering, I have absolutetely no idea to know if it's any true. Can anybody confirm? Would the PS3 be able to upscale if it received a proper firmware update? I am tired of looking at crappy PSone and PStwo games on my HDTV. Seriously, have any of you tried FFXII or God of War 2 on your PS3 hooked up to an HDTV? It looks fucking horrible!

My PS3 upscales just fine. Don't expect a huge difference.

I can indeed confirm for you that the PS3 connected through HDMI to a 1080P TV will upscale to 1080P. If not then it can upscale to 480P.

Well, the thing is, when up scaling a resolution you're really not doing anything to the game assets. So, just because you've got hardware outputting the 1080p signal (via upscaling) doesn't mean that the game is going to look pretty; as it's assets were designed with only 480i/p in mind. It's like bitching about an atari game not being in 3D "even though you're upscaling it on your PC".

Yes is does. But I think it's easier to upscale movies. UMD movies on an HDTV look really good considering they're such a tiny resolution for the PSP.

It does if you want to upscale DVD's.

Yes it does and you can mess around with it in the display setting I think.

    Upscales DVD's perfectly.

It does work but it depends on a lot of things, such as what you are watching, what kind of HDTV you have, and how it's connected. I have a cheap HDTV and there are some movies that look really good upscaled, and there are others that look horrible, none in the middle unfortunately.
