Tax time is here and I'm going to have some money to spend. So my question is, is buying a PS3 just to play the games I cannot get for my 360 worth it? Games like Heavy Rain, Ni No Kuni, metal gear solid 4, little big planet etc... Mainly triple A titles and RPG's. I really hate that I am missing out on so many games. My other option is a 3DS, only problem I see with that is something big comes out for the 360, it takes a long time for me to remember I even have a handheld system.

The PlayStation 3 (often abbreviated PS3) is the third home video game console created and released by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
Considering a PS3.
PS3 is a great buy now. It's still a great blu-ray player and the amount of exclusives on the cheap is staggering. If you are absolutely new to the whole PlayStation ecosystem might I suggest this God of War bundle they just announced http://blog.us.playstation.com/2013/01/31/god-of-war-ascension-legacy-bundle-includes-garnet-red-ps3/
It depends how much you want to play PS3 games I guess? Also it might be worth waiting to see if the PS4 will be backward compatible first (I'm guessing it won't be, but who knows).
Mmm that red is sexy. I do miss the GOW series, 2 was probably one if my favorite ps2 games. But that is a bit more than I was looking to pay, at least in terms of the console itself. If I bought the 250GB slim Ni No Kuni, heavy rain or MGS4, or a similar variation with the games I would want. I would feel fine spending $350, if that makes sense? Also I was thinking of waiting to see Sony's big announcement, if the ps4 has backward capability then that's the system I will go with.
You're coming in at such a good time. The PS4 will have mediocre stuff for at least a year after its launch, so you'll have a solid 2 years of playing the best games of last generation for cheap. The PS3 has an amazing exclusive backlog, and they all still look totally fantastic and stand up. Play 10 minutes of MGS4 and you'll realize it's a worthy buy.
The first party games are great and numerous. Many of the best games of this generation are exclusive to PS3. Pretty much regardless of genre there are excellent games that are only on PS3. I would definitely recommend it. Here are some games I would get for it:
- Resistance Series
- Uncharted Series
- Motorstorm 2 and 3
- Metal Gear Solid 4
- Ni No Kuni
- God of War Series
- Infamous Series
- LittleBigPlanet Series
- Killzone 2 and 3
- Heavy Rain
- Journey
- Flower
- Ratchet and Clank Future Series
- Folklore
- PixelJunk Series
- Starhawk
Can't forget Demon Souls is another reason I want a PS3.
Only reason I want a 3DS is because of Fire Emblem looking amazing, but I know I would get pissed off and quit mid story. I hate losing guys in Xcom so my solution to that was stop playing, stop losing guys and I love that game. I think I just sold myself a PS3... now it's just time to wait and see how much money I get back and if the big sony announcement is PS4.

There's a new mode in this Fire Emblem game where there is no permadeath. Also, the February 20th event is very likely to be about the PS4.
Either console you meantioned has an extensive list of great exclusives. Maybe the decisive factor should be whether or not Sony's upcoming console will be backwards compatible with PS3 games.
I actually think that many of Sony's exclusives are just okay. Resistance, Killzone, Infamous, LBP... all mediocre to good games but nothing amazing. That said, two of my favorite games this gen are Heavy Rain and MGS4, and other exclusives are still great like 3D Dot Game Heroes, Katamari Forever, and the Uncharted series (mostly for the characters and writing). Combine that with the great digital games they have like Flower, Journey, and Unfinished Swan and there's a lot of great content to go through. Not to mention The Last of Us and Beyond.
I'd say it's a pretty easy decision over the 3DS (and I'm a pretty big Nintendo fan), so long as Orbis doesn't have BC.

@Raven10: Man Folklore was such a good game. One of the gems that got lost this generation.
I never beat it but what I played was really interesting. Definitely the best thing Game Republic ever did. I should go back and play it through at some point. Such a great premise. Shame cool ideas like that are lost among things like Call of Duty.
@Bane122: I think that Resistance 3 is one of the best shooters of this generation. It is criminally underrated. The first two games were okay but not nearly as good. LittleBigPlanet is really creative and gives players a ton of great level building tools but the platforming is a bit weak. The first Infamous had a great story and the second one was a blast to play even though the story wasn't as good. Killzone I'll agree is pretty mediocre. It looks beautiful but there is nothing that interesting about the gameplay and the story is just horrible.

I have been investigating this quite a bit because I have been thinking the same thing and also have a 360 already. There just are not that many great exclusives for the PS3 to make it worthwhile for me. I was holding off buying a PS3 until all the great JRPGs hit, but they never really did. It has about 5 titles that I want to play, the cost for playing those 5 games is not that good of a deal. Unless you are looking to buy a bluray player (which I am not).
@Raven10: Our opinions align pretty well, actually. To break it down: Killzone and Resisance 1-2 were the ones I think of as mediocre. I've not played R3 but would like to at some point as everything I've seen of it looks fantastic. LBP I think is a good series, I just personally don't like it very much (mostly for the platforming, which is what I want from it). Infamous 1 I had a lot of fun with and would recommend but it's nothing amazing; haven't played 2.
@Excast: But using bluray isn't a big factor in the backwards compatibility. Dropping Cell, however, is. My guess is PS4 won't be have BC as it's probably going to add a good bit of cost to the system to put Cell in, along with any technical problems it may present. I'd love to be wrong, though. I think we'll see BC added down the line via streaming, and even then only 1st party titles. Probably a PSN+ thing.

The one thing bad about the ps3 for me is how long it takes to update and download stuff...
Never had this problem. PS3 and 360 are the same speed for me. One thing the PS3 is slow on however is popping out to the XMB during a game. Sometimes it's fast and sometimes it takes forever to load.
The real consideration for you should be: buy a PS3 now or wait for PS4? But there are certainly enough great exclusive titles to make it worthwhile.
PS4, I hope it's gonna be great for a lot of reasons, but I'm not expecting backwards compatibility to be one of them. I hope they clear this up right away. I really hope a price drop for ps3 comes up so I can play a few PS3 games before next gen, they keep just bundling the PS3 (slim 1, or slim 2 at this point I don't care) with a couple of games I have no interest in and calling it a deal.

Valkyria Chronicles is an excellent strategy game that you could probably get for cheap that could take the place of Fire Emblem and is exclusive to the PS3. It was one of the first games I bought when I jumped on the PS3 bandwagon when the first slims came out.
