I've only had my PS3 for a week, and I've had "Corrupted data" entries show up in my games list at least 3-4 times. The last couple have been 0 KB, I've had no trouble deleting them, and I've had no issues with stuff I've downloaded. I think it seems to happen when I set the PS3 to turn off after completing downloads (which I've been doing a lot, as I've grabbed all of the PS+ stuff), but I'm not sure all of the cases have been that.

Also, one time, I started up my PS3 after leaving it overnight to download stuff, and a warning telling me it didn't shut down properly came up, which I unfortunately accidentally skipped.

I've seen a bit of discussion online saying this is relatively normal, but man, as someone who knows a fair bit about computers, any sign of data corruption sets off massive "OH SHIT, DO I HAVE A BACKUP?" red flags. That said, this doesn't feel like it's a issue with the drive, because everything has otherwise been working flawlessly.

Should I be concerned? I'm going to back my system up to a USB drive tonight just in case, which seems to be all I can really do to mitigate this.

With multiple PS3s that I regularly use, I don't ever see corrupted data.

As long as you don't shut it off by yanking out the power cord, it's sounding like there is a bigger problem, especially since it's just a week old and it's had this many instances of issues.

Obviously hard drive seems suspicious, but if it's crashing in the middle of a write that wouldn't necessarily be the drives fault.

I have 2 corrupted datas that can't be deleted. You're probably fine.

The thing is that it doesn't feel like it's crashing -- it's been working flawlessly outside of the corrupted data, which seems to be mostly or entirely 0 KB. If I'm right about it only happening when I set it to auto-shutdown, it almost feels like it's something about the automatic installation feature (which I think only happens when it's set to auto-shutdown).

Getting the hardware replaced would probably be a huge pain, especially since this feels like a software thing. I've also got three weeks, so may as well stick it out and try to narrow down the problem.

Pulling the drive, plugging it into my PC, and running a disk consistency check is also possible if it comes to that.

My Ps3 doesn't do that put it happens often on my PSP.

I think if you go into basically the bios of the ps3 you can get rid of it

If you do take the drive out you can also consider wiping it and doing a fresh firmware/OS install.

But yeah, keep an eye on it for now sounds good. Just keep in mind you should be able to use automatic install without issue, and when it didn't shutdown properly that's an instance of a crash which could have caused corrupted data. As long as it's rare, because as I said I've avoided getting corrupted data after years of PS3 use.

Also, if the machine lets out 3 quick beeps it's indicating a crash. Doesn't mean a hardware problem as games do crash, but something to listen for, especially if it happens in the OS or while downloading.

It shouldn't be showing corrupt data that often. I have only had corrupt data show up a few times in the years i have owned my ps3, and that was only when the ps3 was improperly turned off or crashed. Try using the recovery menu to rebuild the database and file system, and if it still happens try formatting the drive after you back everything up.

Does it seem like it freezes when you try to delete it? I had my game data from Resistance 3 get corrupted somehow and every time I tried to delete it the PS3 would seemingly freeze on me. I eventually let it sit there and it finally deleted it.

I don't remember what it does. It doesn't freeze though. Tells me it couldn't be deleted or something.

I decided to just cut my losses, back up my saves, and do a full format (from the recovery menu). I downloaded some stuff overnight without incident, so with any luck I'm in the clear.
