firmware 3.0 rumors surface.

It seems Sony are planning a major update with Firmware 3.0.

According to vg247.com Firmware 3.0 will be "a huge overhaul". This update will have "a completely new system" for the console and it will be out some time before Christmas. Some of a new features are:

- User Reputation.
- Grief Reporting Similar to the LBP system.
- Background downloads for game patches.
- Simultaneous audio output from the HDMI and the Optical.

They go on and say that "We've been told a lot more on this, but you'll just have to wait". With this rumored firmware update and a nice lineup of exclusives and heavily asked for price drop (which I think is coming) it looks like Sony are gearing up for hack of winter.

What I also would like to see in this update is:

- cross game chat support.
- party system similar to the one on XBL.
- new look for the player card.
- game screen and video capture.
- upscaling for PS3 games.
- surround sound support for H.264.
- MKV file format support.

MKVs and H264 can be transcoded through PS3 Media Server and be played localled after a copy across (file sizes are large) so it isn't necessary. Cross Game chat is all I want really, maybe the ability to play music in the background because if the game has the option to turn music off you can play behind it and if it will ever be possible to access the XMB inside a PS1/PS2 game.

And game upscaling? Uhhh PS1 and PS2 games upscale for me fine also much smoother compared to a PS2 on an HDTV.

@Subject2Change: I was actually referring to ps3 game upscaling. Maybe I should fix that...lol. as for PS3 media Server goes then I would love native support for those formats because I use wifi in my house and even though I get really good signal strength and quality it still has a lot of hiccups when it comes to HD movies. Yes it can run 1080p just fine but at really low bit rate speeds compared to the native bit rate of the original file.

I read about that.  I hope it's true.

#5 Posted by Subject2Change (2966 posts) -

True it would be nice if you can use an external drive or something and play from that, fortunately for me I run a wired connection and only do 720p (only have 1080i as the other option).

And ya, I was confused with the upscaling comment. Really hope it is a major overhaul and hope it doesn't require the PS3MediaServer guys to recode their shit and it be out of commission for a bit.

Hopefully if there ever is cross game chat/party chat, it won't be as bad as 360's.

I think Sony are going to have some major announcement concerning this update and more come TGS. This update might also have something to do with upcoming release of MAG.

“There will be a new API available to so the user can… allow users and also obtain users’ reputation.”

Hey, why not trophies while we are at it?

Interesting. I am intrigued by the User Reputation, cross game chat support and the party system similar to the one on XBL.

@Subject2Change:  It would be nice to have proper MKV for my needs since transcoding through the Playstation Media Server doesn't work all that well for me, but I can stream AVI and VOB without any troubles.  MKV plays for about 5 minutes and then freezes up.  I have XP with the maximum RAM the OS can handle and a reasonablely good Intel dual core but to no avail.  So I'd like MKV in the next update just so I don't have to convert my files for easy playback.

Since I am playing a lot of PS2 games, game upscaling sounds interesting.  I wonder if it will make PS2 games look better or just fuzzier.  Maybe the cut scenes will look better and the gameplay parts will remain the same.

I'm digging the game update/patch in the background idea, too.

@angelkanarias: The cross chat game support and the party system are something I would like to see and not a feature that will necessarily be included with that update.

I WANT CROSS GAME VOICE CHAT AND PARTY MODE!

I hope it goes without a hitch. Sony could use a boost right now, and spending some resource on improving the feeling of community on PS3 is absolutely the right thing to do. Xbox 360 is successful only because of Xbox Live and the prominence it's given within the UI: it's in your face all the time, yet PS3 owners seem to still be crying out for basic features like the ability to talk to their mates while they play different games.

You're all sick of hearing it but I want PS2 backwards compatibility on all PS3 SKUs. It might not happen but I still want it.

A PS3 playing PS2 games already has a scaler in effect, it smooths it out and looks much better than the PS2.

I run a Core2Duo 3.0, 4gigs of RAM (now 8 gigs) and a wired connection and have no issues with 720p MKVs and had no problems; don't have 720p. You can do a Copy from PSM to your PS3; it'll take a few minutes based on your connection but it'll transcode it so the PS3 can play it back. While it would be nice if the PS3 can playback MKV it isn't required as a work around exists.

Kinda of  long shot because all the newer models don't have the PS2 CPU not the GPU and I don't think it's possiable to have a decent emulator running on them without the PS2 hardware.

and how is that? the party chat works swimmingly for me.

I'm totally new to this whole HDMI audio thing, so sorry if this question comes across as dumb. Why would want simultaneous HDMI and optical audio output?

Me want NOW....
Oh wait your ps3 HD is FAT32 that has a file limit of 4gb.....
But then again only splitting the file is less work then transcoding the hole file.... OK I still want NOW.....
#22 Posted by mordukai (7157 posts) -
@THAfara0: I will never figure out why Sony choose the FAT32, 4Gb limit for a file just doesn't cut these days. A simple update can change that though so lets keep our fingers crossed. I think I should Add to my Firmware wishlist.
#23 Posted by _Phara0h_ (889 posts) -
@Mordukai: Well it's not a simple update because to convert to NTFS ore to other File systems you will have to format your drive.........

That seems incredibly fake. Also a bullshit of an update if you ask me.

Wha-Bam. There it is.
#29 Posted by mordukai (7157 posts) -
@Drebin_893:lets hope this is rumor turn out to be true. I have said it many times before, I think sony needs to learn from MS how to market a product or a game. MS can sell dried shit and convince you its the best thing since sliced bread. I love my PS3 and I love the games coming out of sony but holy shit they don't fucking marker them. I read that Killzone 2 had only 2 million Euros or so for marketing...WTF...how do you not market the living shit out of that game. Viral videos, Collectors addition, special PS3 Killzone 2 bundles, maybe an ARG game to market the game before it came out. Lets hope they do the same for God of War 3.

No more need to convert? MKV? impossible... SONY would never grant my wishes like that
