It seems Sony are planning a major update with Firmware 3.0.

The PlayStation 3 (often abbreviated PS3) is the third home video game console created and released by Sony Computer Entertainment Inc.
firmware 3.0 rumors surface.
MKVs and H264 can be transcoded through PS3 Media Server and be played localled after a copy across (file sizes are large) so it isn't necessary. Cross Game chat is all I want really, maybe the ability to play music in the background because if the game has the option to turn music off you can play behind it and if it will ever be possible to access the XMB inside a PS1/PS2 game.
And game upscaling? Uhhh PS1 and PS2 games upscale for me fine also much smoother compared to a PS2 on an HDTV.
True it would be nice if you can use an external drive or something and play from that, fortunately for me I run a wired connection and only do 720p (only have 1080i as the other option).
And ya, I was confused with the upscaling comment. Really hope it is a major overhaul and hope it doesn't require the PS3MediaServer guys to recode their shit and it be out of commission for a bit.
“There will be a new API available to so the user can… allow users and also obtain users’ reputation.”
Hey, why not trophies while we are at it?
Interesting. I am intrigued by the User Reputation, cross game chat support and the party system similar to the one on XBL.
Since I am playing a lot of PS2 games, game upscaling sounds interesting. I wonder if it will make PS2 games look better or just fuzzier. Maybe the cut scenes will look better and the gameplay parts will remain the same.
I'm digging the game update/patch in the background idea, too.
I hope it goes without a hitch. Sony could use a boost right now, and spending some resource on improving the feeling of community on PS3 is absolutely the right thing to do. Xbox 360 is successful only because of Xbox Live and the prominence it's given within the UI: it's in your face all the time, yet PS3 owners seem to still be crying out for basic features like the ability to talk to their mates while they play different games.
" @Subject2Change: It would be nice to have proper MKV for my needs since transcoding through the Playstation Media Server doesn't work all that well for me, but I can stream AVI and VOB without any troubles. MKV plays for about 5 minutes and then freezes up. I have XP with the maximum RAM the OS can handle and a reasonablely good Intel dual core but to no avail. So I'd like MKV in the next update just so I don't have to convert my files for easy playback.Since I am playing a lot of PS2 games, game upscaling sounds interesting. "A PS3 playing PS2 games already has a scaler in effect, it smooths it out and looks much better than the PS2.
I run a Core2Duo 3.0, 4gigs of RAM (now 8 gigs) and a wired connection and have no issues with 720p MKVs and had no problems; don't have 720p. You can do a Copy from PSM to your PS3; it'll take a few minutes based on your connection but it'll transcode it so the PS3 can play it back. While it would be nice if the PS3 can playback MKV it isn't required as a work around exists.
" You're all sick of hearing it but I want PS2 backwards compatibility on all PS3 SKUs. It might not happen but I still want it. "Do this now.
" @Lashe said:Kinda of long shot because all the newer models don't have the PS2 CPU not the GPU and I don't think it's possiable to have a decent emulator running on them without the PS2 hardware." " Hopefully if there ever is cross game chat/party chat, it won't be as bad as 360's. "and how is that? the party chat works swimmingly for me.
I'm totally new to this whole HDMI audio thing, so sorry if this question comes across as dumb. Why would want simultaneous HDMI and optical audio output?
Ok im all for firmware updates, but this rumor and hype wagon for it is just getting way out of hand.
"@pornstorestiffi: Sony has a product publicity department...could have fooled me. "
Wha-Bam. There it is.
