    HDMI to DVI Cable should work from PS3 to Computer monitor; however you will not get any sound. You will need to get an optical cable out of the PS3 into your computer if you have optical in on your sound card which most lowend cards/motherboards do not.

    HDMI to DVI would only work for an HDCP compliant LCD monitor. Im thinking he has a CRT if he wants a VGA cable. 

    Yes, that cable ought to work, but the resolutions used would be somewhat different causing the image to appear...stretched. And you will need to find an alternate audio source. Could be optical, but it appears the cable has audio AV plugs, in which case you would just need to plug them into a reciever or something. 

    I don't know if you'll want to go with that particular chord though... some feedback there saying the video cuts out for a few seconds every couple minutes. :S

    you could probably find a cheap/free 15" tv for less hassle in the mean-time before you can get a tv better than the one that broke =)
    Also, I admire your dedication xD
