Now i know, you back it all up, put the external harddrive and copy it on to the new ps3, the problem i have is my old ps3 has YLOD'd, how the hell can i get my data back??? If i just take its harddrive into the new ps3 it justs formats it, so how can i back up if my ps3 isnt funcioning, please help!!!
Help! How can i switch all my data from one PS3 to the next? But.
Well, try this: plug the hard drive into a PC since its a simple SATA drive, look up the names of the types of files that are your saves, then copy all of that stuff over. It's also a good idea to have that stuff on your PC backed up on occasion just in case.
If you are going to get your [PS3] fixed by Sony, just ask if they mess with the HDD at all (I don't think they do for that issue) so that way you can just wait a bit and be assured of everything being perfectly fine in the end.
Good luck, I know the pain of losing saves without a backup.
Dunno if it's similar or not but i had an issue when comcast, for some unknown reason, shutdown my email account attached to my PSN account.
I couldn't reactivate the address so I had to get a new one. With the email address dead I couldn't access my PSN account. I would get an error when I would attempt to sign in. So I had to make a new psn account as well.
Completely lost access to material on my hard drive and the sony help line's response was pretty much "you're screwed".
Lost about 20 rock band songs. =(
that is your best shot. call up Sony or a 3rd party repair company and tell them the problem and see if they will send you back the same console.
" @teekomeeko: The PS3 uses an encrypted file system which is meant to only work on a single console. Last time I tried, my PC didn't recognize anything. Your best bet is to have it repaired and make sure they don't swap it. "
the only other option is to open it up and change the thermal past or "reflow" the system and hopefully you will get enough time to transfer the data or fix the problem.
It's encrypted and you won't be able to transfer over game saves via PC. It's hard enough to transfer them over even when the PS3 is working! Most of the game saves have some sort of copyright that does not allow it. This is very unfortunate and there should be some sort of association to your PSN account, so you can download your PS3 game saves as long as you are logged in. Would be really great since I can't transfer over on a USB stick...
Only way to go about this is to send it in or learn some serious hacking skills quick!
Ah, okay. I just occasionally copy my saves to a USB stick if they will go (of the games I own only Heavy Rain didn't allow it last time I tried) and the copy that to a specific folder in my PS3 just in case. I never went console-to-console without proper use the backup utility in the menu so I didn't know purely copied saves wouldn't transfer as well. I'll keep that in mind in case anything goes wrong with my own system later.
Ugh... So they guaranteed a change in system, huh? That sucks big time. It looks like you might really be out of look for this. Can you request to get the same system back, even if it takes way longer to do it? Depending on the saves you have, it might be worth it to take a month or two off from gaming so you go back to where you were.
If not, search online for a place to send it in, just not to Sony
I'm in the same situation as you bro. About 85% of YLODs can be fixed easily with a heat gun and some thermal paste. Mine is not one of them as mine is a power suply problem instead of a heating problem. If you want your data and your original 60GB, you need ot fix it yourself or find a indipendent repair company. To fix it yourself, google gilsky fix and you should be able to find a PDF and some tutorial videos to guide you through fixing it. I also know of 2 guys that have used gophermods.com to do their repairs and come highly recomended.
