PS3 out of all the three consoles is the best media device. With music, video and pics easy to find on a menu it is a important feature. But do we actually use it that way?Post what you do with every media part of the XMB.
Pictures: Got like 20 background images that i use as a custom XMB (Got a pic of it if you want to).
Videos: I got 3 episodes of CO-OP in HD.Looks nice.Good to show fellow gamer guests.
Music: Got nothing important.I have a episode or two of the Bombcast and LISTEN UP! but thats all of it.

The only videos I have are the Heavenly Sword and Dead Space episodes which I rewatch from time to time. I have a bunch of TOOL albums in my music section that I used when playing Super Stardust HD, but it pisses me off that Sony hasn't added the feature that allows  the user to play their songs while playing any game.

Nope, to me it's still more of a game machine. Actually, since the 360 supports my iPod and the PS3 doesn't, I use the 360 when I want to listen to music. PS3 is better for movies, though, especially with the quieter disc drive.

When my laptop was in for repairs (and before my iPod Touch had this functionality) I downloaded bombcasts on to my PS3, and listened to them while playing Dr. Mario on my Wii, or Worms on my 360 with a buddy of mine.

Weird, I know.

#5 Posted by BigBoss1911 (2523 posts) -

I watch alot of movies on it,but for music and internet I just go on my pc.

#6 Posted by VitaminWaterYum (381 posts) -

I would if I had one, since I don't have an HDD player for my 360. Most stuff looks pretty bad on a big TV anyway unless I'm watching it on Netflix.

#7 Posted by Scheds (464 posts) -

I use my PS3 to play DVDs and BluRays most of the time, but I still think of it as a gaming device. I think I have song and a few background images on it otherwise.

#8 Posted by Scullinator (514 posts) -

I only own  one game for PS3 , its Little Big Planet.  However I turn on my PS3 more than my 360 because of the media.  I download lots of movies and copy them over to the PS3.  I also use the web browser a lot since I tend to leave my laptop at work most of the time.  I game more on the xbox for the sole reason of gamerpoints and online play.

#9 Posted by Hairydutchman (1040 posts) -

I watch all my downloaded movies and series on the PS3, and I have some Blu-rays.

#10 Posted by shrig32 (151 posts) -

I use it for videos- so that's iPlayer, YouTube, DVD's, Blu-rays etc.. But for music, it could be better =(

#11 Posted by mordukai (7179 posts) -

I have three seasons of BSG on it right now and a couple of movies.

#12 Posted by RsistncE (4496 posts) -

I use it as a media server. It's really pretty awesome being able to access my massive media collection off my computer on my TV.

#13 Edited by sloppyjoe (405 posts) -

I use it as a connection to my media server on the PC.  So my ps3 can play MP3s from my PC, though I also have digital out on my PC to the receiver.  So it's just if I want to see a visualizer or if I need to see video from another source while playing the music that decides how I run it.  I copied some albums from my PC to the PS3 though.

And of course as a bluray and upscaling DVD player via HDMI.

#14 Posted by Iceman2913 (508 posts) -

I use mine for music, videos, photos,bc,and web browsing

#15 Posted by dsplayer1010 (2227 posts) -

I watch Blu-Rays and play games on it.

#16 Posted by LiquidPrince (16106 posts) -

I do.

#17 Posted by Giantsquirrel (601 posts) -

Oh hell yeah, probably the nicest UI of any media system I've used before, and I adore the "Earth" visualizer while playing music.

  • Pictures - a few images of gaming displays me and my psn friends have traded.  A couple high res backgrounds I've taken from my pc and such.  Also have about 20 themes I flop between.  Mostly its the Calvin and Hobbes theme :)
  • Videos - pretty much full.  I have the Final Fantasy and Zelda retrospectives from gametrailers on there, tons of movie trailers, and this awesome feature where you're pretty much skydiving with a 1080p camera mounted on this guys head, along with a thing to record ihs audible heartbeat.  Absolutley amazing.
  • Music - tons of stuff here also.  about 12gigs worth.  From Jack Johnson, Chingy, Missy Eliot, Eminem, Lupe Fiasco, Avenged Sevenfold, Disturbed, Coldplay, Kid Rock, The Eagles, Kanses, Frank Sinatra, etc.  It's hooked up to a nice set of Kenwood trip7s (relics of a year gone by), so we fire up the bbq, open up the windows, and turn up the sound now that summer is here.

once opon a time  i used it for EVERYTHING  i had all my music on it and riped my dvds and put them on there (compressed ofcorse) i used play TV in order to get tv used it as a dvd player a blu ray player and of corse games. gut as i got more and more games off the psn and more and more games needed to be installed all my music has come off it  and i only have a few videos  and a cupple of pics  i still watch tv on it but reseptions gone really bad lately   due to next door planting trees <rant>thats right PLANTING TREES there gardens bloody no bigger than my room and there planting trees ¬_¬ </rant>anyway its still my only blu ray player and ive gave all other dvd players away and i also use it to play ps2 games

#20 Posted by Otacon (2209 posts) -

I used to use it a lot, remember downloading on the spot from the web browser every weekend, as well as podcasts. Now I just use it as a games machine.

#21 Posted by MetalGearSunny (6999 posts) -

I use it to play games and watch Blu-rays. Not much else really.

#22 Posted by WilliamRLBaker (4779 posts) -

some times, but not often i mostly use it for blurays i dont really play too many games on it. Though i like watching blurays on it.

#23 Posted by WitchHunter_Z (882 posts) -

Mostly games, but I do have some music ripped onto there, mostly for when I get bored of hearing some Japanese guy scream 'IN-DEST-RUC-TIBLE!' for the thousandth time. Also use it as a blu-ray and DVD player, and it's the only thing hooked up to the 5.1 currently.

#24 Posted by SpinCookie (680 posts) -

I always rent movies from the Video Store on the PSN, I love that feature.  And I pay for blu-ray service in my netflix so I use those in my PS3.  I love that huge black box.  Not to mention I play a shit ton of games on the thing.

#25 Posted by Subject2Change (2966 posts) -

I use it as a streaming media device pretty much daily along side the PS3 Media Server application; www.ps3mediaserver.blogspot.com

Don't rent videos from PSN, download trailers occasionally from PSN. Also use it for Blu-Ray and DVD as well.

#26 Posted by Scambug (11 posts) -

Apart from vinyl, my PS3 does all the media in my house. Games, DVDs, Blu-Rays, streamed audio and video from my PC etc.
I use Nero MediaHome and it works like a charm.
Due to buying games on the PSN, I keep all my media files on my PC, just to be sure I have enough space on my hard drive.

been thinking about installing Linux on it, but I haven't gotten around to it yet.

BTW: this is my first post on GiantBomb.com. Hello people!

#27 Posted by Cook66 (227 posts) -

I actually use my computer more as a media device these days, but in the rare event of a blu-ray movie being played it'll happen on my PS3. I haven't bought a single blu-ray this year though. I sometimes stream a movie from my server to my PS3 since the 360 doesn't support the most common of media files, but most my PS3 use is rooted in games.

#28 Posted by chililili (1328 posts) -

Yeah I do, its pretty good

#29 Posted by Gizmo (5389 posts) -

With the PS3 I can copy movies and music onto the hardrive, I guess I use it quite a bit.

#30 Posted by Jotun (555 posts) -

I have a few movies and episodes of shows that I play using my PS3. I also have about 10 gigs worth of my favorite albums. The only thing I ever use the picture feature for is backgrounds.

#31 Posted by grainger (330 posts) -

various movie downloads, 1 pic a friend sent me and just about my entire music collection, i used the internet a fair bit when im not on the computer, have 3 shelves filled with about 30 blu-rays, only have about 7 games and own hundreds of dvd's... i use it far more as a media centre than a game machine

#32 Posted by Ket87 (441 posts) -

I've got all my music and pictures on mine, and tons of videos on there. Its a great media device, I just wish the music could be played over top of games like my 360 does and that it supported .mkv files so I can watch HD videos on it.

#33 Posted by Lard (262 posts) -

I use a program called PS3 Media Server and stream TV shows I've downloaded to my PS3 so I can watch it in the living room while eating dinner and such.

I have PlayOn on my computer so I can watch Hulu and Netflix on my PS3.

Sony got cocky with the ps3, they tried to bill it as a media device with the blu ray technology and all it did was make the console cost too much and look to chuncky for the average person to find it attractive, you can bet if sony comes out with another console it will be a lot cheaper and much more Wii-like.

@NukeGoBoom:
I own both a PS3 and my 360. I use my 360 for gaming. I use my PS3 for gaming also, but I also use it to watch ALL my DVDs and Blu-Rays (reg DVDs look amazing on PS3), I use it to listen to my music, I transfer all my video files (like shows I've downloaded) to usb drives and watch them on my ps3, I occasionally rent and buy movies or shows on PS3, so overall, I do a lot more on my PS3 than any other console. It depends on each individual user, but I definitely enjoy all the capabilities it has. Not to say the 360 can't do all of this, but I feel the PS3 does it better, not performance wise, but in terms of overall user experience. What I mean by that is, for example, I can listen to music and surf the web at the same time on my PS3. So I enjoy using the media features on the PS3 more.
#37 Posted by MrPerfect (436 posts) -

I will post likely start using it as a media device soon, I recently got my PS3 a few days ago.

#38 Posted by addictedtopinescent (3645 posts) -

I have my pc for all that soo no, problem is most ppl I know who bought the PS3 already had all that (music, videos whatevs) on their pc , and we're to lazy to switch.

#39 Posted by PhaggyBigNastyMcKill (564 posts) -

Hells yeah I keep all my phaggiest nastiest snuff kill porn on my ps3. I only put the softcore pussy shit on my 360.

#40 Posted by KindGalaxy (429 posts) -

I use my X360 for it more than my PS3. My PS3 I use mostly to stream music, since it seems to support more codecs than my X360. Never video though, that's always my X360.

#41 Posted by Vecta (167 posts) -

Unless Im watching a DVD or Blu-ray, I use my 360 for most media functions as it supports a wider range of video formats as well as my mp3 player.

#42 Posted by Kombat (2205 posts) -

That Ghostbusters blu-ray being released on June 16th is very, very happy that I have a PS3.

I watch tons of movies on it.

#43 Posted by CountRockula (398 posts) -

I used to use it as a media server, and it was great.  Then I woke up one morning and my computer and PS3 couldn't see each other anymore, even though they were still on the same network.  It's been dark days ever since then.

#44 Posted by PenguinDust (12598 posts) -

I have a separate DVD/DVR, but I use my PS3 as my primary DVD player anyway.  I also stream stuff from my PC through it.  But I don't use it for music.  I prefer my Xbox 360 for music since it works better with my Ipod.

#45 Posted by CenturionCajun (1461 posts) -

I only use my PS3 to play games and watch Blu Rays.

#46 Posted by Manatassi (791 posts) -

I use the 360 to stream movies and music from my PC. I have a PS3 but every time I use it to stream Media I lose my network connection which is pretty much the reason I only use the 360.

Um what common file formats dosen't the 360 support?
If you dont know what you are talking about then I suggest you dont comment simply to have a go.
The 360 supports divx, avi, mp3, mp4 etc etc
what common file format are you using?
#48 Posted by Pantalooney (317 posts) -

I pretty much only use my PS3 for blu-rays, i hardly play any games on it anymore.
My 360 is my gaming device, my Ps3 is my media device.

#49 Posted by Artemis_D (817 posts) -

The funny thing is... I do everything with my PS3 but play games on it, which is kind of sad, considering that's why I bought it.  I've played MGS4 too death, and there was nothing else I really wanted to play after that.  Now with games like Infamous on shelves, I can start buying games for it... though now it's just a matter of me being broke. =(

But yeah, I have tons of music, pictures and watch many  blurays on my PS3.

#50 Posted by killdave (1073 posts) -

I use my ps3 to watch blu rays and play a few games. I use my xbox to play games and Im excited for instant download 1080p movies
