Man, this alleged new PS3 design looks busted!

The pinstripes are weird enough, but either from top down or the sides it just looks straight broken! It looks like it has two old fashioned pop-open disc trays, one that wont close right, and one that got stuck closed too far down. Oddly enough the design is practically covering up their own Sony logo. Look at the sharp edge that sticks out on the far left of the rear hookups photo. It looks like it was designed by committee, blind. It looks like The Homer. The shapes by the Sony logo look like Homer... his beard shape. Really hope it aint real.

Looks as bad as all of Sonys console designs. All this picture does is make me think "Yah, that looks about right".

looks like one of those 300-in-1 "consoles" sold at mall kiosks

I like it. If they had eliminated all the gloss in favor of the wavy matte portions it would be even better (aside for space for the on and eject buttons I suppose). Instead of making it as simple as possible they are emphasizing the PS3 look.

Why change it? Whats wrong with the current PS3 design?

#8 Posted by rachelepithet (1350 posts) -

Loved the original gray PS3 design from 2005, and the Bananrang controller. But aside from changing the logo, I thought the slim PS3 of 2009 looked incredible, and so simple. Hate hate hate that logo and the way it's just plopped on the system top (looking weird when the console is stood up, though it seems all three companies are trying to get people to stop overheating/damaging DVDs by encouraging horizontal positioning with sir redesigns). Just "PS3" not "PLAY-STATION 3" written in that Spiderman font looked fine. Furthermore, every redesign further dates the dual shock controller look. It was meant to look good with the PS1, but looks old fashioned and square with the recent consoles. I think I've seen Sony TV's use that fake wood (fake marble/graphite?) pinstripe plastic before, so this may be real folks.

Nothing... I love the slim design.

This one is suppose to be even smaller tho, correct? I agree it looks kinda ugly. Odd how they put the "PS3" so close to the edge. If I didn't have a slim already I might consider getting it if it is in fact smaller but I wonder how much smaller it is.

#10 Posted by Contrarian (1143 posts) -

Wow, that is pretty ugly, but to be honest, Sony have always made ugly consoles (and their controller is horrible). Maybe not original Xbox ugly, but still ugly. The whole shape of it is unappealing. Lucky it makes up for it in being a quality machine.

#11 Posted by avidwriter (667 posts) -

Why would they got and make another model of the PS3 this far into its life?

#12 Posted by MooseyMcMan (10557 posts) -

What's wrong with pop-open disc trays? I had a disc stuck in my PS3 last year because the power went out for a couple days and I couldn't turn the thing on. Pop open trays are great!

#13 Posted by cclemon36 (180 posts) -

It's like they're trying to get people to buy the old models off the shelves with this design. Also, it looks a bit like the PS2 slim from the side, with that horizontal striping.

Anyway, if it comes in pink or bright purple, I'm all over it. I like my consoles to look ridiculous.

#14 Posted by PenguinDust (12455 posts) -

I heard there was a new model number registered. Well, the beveled top might reduce the dust. My original PS3 fatty was a dust magnet and my current slim, while better than the former, still attracts quite a bit of free-flowing dust. But, as other have said, this one isn't a looker. I would have thought Sony might make the next model even smaller. That would have been cooler. Of course, these are rumors so until the official announcement comes, I can't take any of this too seriously.

What are you talking about...? The PS3 designs were nice and slick...

As long as the PS4 is still coming in a somewhat timely manner, I'm all for it.

That being said, I'm getting the creeping feeling that the PS4 will just be 'PS3 + Gaikai.'

This sadly looks real, as if to maybe follow up with a die shrink. Please don't eat our handhelds, guys.

The design looks like something straight out of the Atari 2600 era. If you put some sweet ass faux wood paneling on there I'm all for it.

Edit: And as long as the PS logo can be spun around, it's still kosher in my book.

@SexyToad: @believer258: Original Gameboy or bust. Don't want none of that artificial flavoring in the Gameboy Advanced.

#21 Posted by Ducksworth (659 posts) -

Meh, could be a prototype or something that we weren't supposed to see. Cool if they are releasing a new model but if they decide to bring back backwards compatibility I'll be kinda butthurt cause I bought a slim last month.

#22 Posted by yoshisaur (2668 posts) -

That looks a little too peculiar for it to be real, but if it is it doesn't look that bad. I always thought the Sony systems looked like pieces of hardware from the next millennium; especially the PS3.

Cheaper to make 'pop and drop' disc tray - not to mention there will likely be a couple more features (maybe wifi and less usb ports?) omitted.

If real it's basically the ps3 equivalent of the stripped down psp that went on sale last year, ridiculous low price point with no trimmings (like the 360 arcade model i guess)

Like the thought of not perma losing discs though, that shit should be standard!

1) make it more efficient and bring costs down even more

2) make it look different to get attention since visual hardware revisions are directly linked to the open mechanism of people's wallets.

As the price of the components fall they can bring the retail price down and eek out a few more sales.

The ps2 didn't look too terribly bad. It made sense. Though seeing the ps1 for the first time, it looked awful. It grew on me.... But i still have my launch 20gig ps3, and i find it still pretty ugly. That gloss is nothing but a dirt attractor. If you don't have a fan at the top, why would you put a curvy design? You cant set say a controller or dvd comfortably on it. Which is why i would've thought the slim would look....normal. But nope.

So i would say this design could be pretty accurate. Only thing i see, is i doubt they'll be a 16gig version like the reports say. But a 160gig instead

#32 Posted by GS_Dan (1402 posts) -

You know, I reckon this could be real.

#33 Posted by Portis (1285 posts) -

Whatever, it looks fine. People shit all over the first PS3 slim when pictures of that thing leaked too. Everyone will get used to it.

#34 Posted by PillClinton (3290 posts) -

It's clearly a callback to the PS2 design, which is awesome. I'm in favor. The edges of the plastic on the rear shot do look really janky, though.

#35 Edited by Sooty (8082 posts) -

I still think the matte phat PS3 is the best design when it's stood up, laid flat it looks ugly as sin.

#36 Posted by Taku128 (795 posts) -

Wouldn't surprise me honestly, the current Slim PS3 is pretty ugly too.

#40 Edited by handlas (2662 posts) -

people sayin PS3 slim looks ugly... what consoles look good to you?

I'd say PS3 slim is probably the prettiest console out there now. Simple, no extra ugly details, hidden vents, feels and looks solid while still being small and light. Beats the original PS3 design that was glossy.

Only negative for me is dust collects quite a bit in the disk insert lip part. If anything, the controller needs an overhaul to me. Feels too light and plasticy.

#41 Posted by BionicRadd (617 posts) -

It still plays games fine, yea? then who cares? I havent liked any of the PS3s as far as design goes. They're awkward looking and dont go with anything in a normal person's home theater setup. So one bit of ugly is as good as another, but I'd love a nice, simple box that I could actually rest a game case or another console on if need be. If they want to encourage horizontal placement, as someone suggested, then make horizontal placement a feasible option.

A matte model existed but it was only 20GB out of the box, still the nicest one made though.
