I have had my PS3 60GB launch console since the UK launch and now it breaks down, I seem to get the blinking red light everytime I turn it on; I didn't play it since last Summer.

Do you guys think it's worth getting a Super Slim now to replace it? I can get a 12GB Super Slim, 500GB hard-drive and mounting bracket for £170. There is also another bundle where you get a 500GB Super Slim and Beyond for £199.

If it seems like something that can be repaired, it might be worth it. As far as I know, even refurbished launch PS3's are still worth a bit more than the rest because of the backwards compatibility and extra usb ports.

If you can't get it repaired (because the backwards compatibility is a nice feature), the super slim is not a bad way to go. It's smaller, quieter, gives off much less heat, and generally does everything that a PS3 is supposed to. I have the 500GB model and it's been a good investment for me.

Is it possible to get the 12GB version and just use by 60GB hard-drive. I understand I may need a caddy for the hard-drive however can't I use the caddy from the 60GB PS3?

Same here. I thought my brother's "regular slim" PS3 was quiet. I used it when I needed to play a PS3 game for most of the generation. I finally got my own around Christmas and that thing makes very little noise at all. I have had no issues with it whatsoever. The method they have for putting discs in and taking them out might be an issue depending on where you put it, but it's otherwise fine.

Even if backwards compatibility is important to you, it might be worth investing in a new one. Fixing the old one is really only delaying its death by a little bit. If you really want to play PS2 games, then PS2's are super cheap, or emulation is usually pretty dependable.

If you are able to turn your current PS3 on, you might want to try and back up saves. When you put the old hard drive into the new PS3, it will format it.

@believer258: Nope cannot turn the PS3 on, just keeps blinking with the red-light. Opened it up and cleaned the dust but still not working. Do I still need to buy a seperate caddy for the hard-drive or can I use my current one?

I'm pretty sure you can just take the 60GB drive out of your old PS3 and put it into the new one. Again, keep in mind that this will format (functionally, delete all the data off of) your 60GB drive.

It's also worth noting that hard drives aren't supposed to last 8 years, so investing in a new one might not be such a bad idea either.
