What are some PSone Classics that still hold up, that I can buy through the PS store, and play on my PS3 or Vita?

Final Fantasy VI is still pretty awesome.

The Playstation was kind of part of a transitional generation and you'll find most games actually made for the Playstation aged horribly and unless you're super bored there's really no reason to play anything except the JRPGs.

Some exceptions would be Super Puzzle Fighter II Turbo and SOTN.

@tepiddeath: I know you can play Final Fantasy VI on your vita. You can get Dracula Chronicles X on your Vita. It's a remake of Rondo of Blood, which is also fantastic but brutally hard, and SOTN is an unlockable. You can't play it at the start but you can look up a walkthrough on how to unlock it. You unlock it in one of the first couple levels.

I'm not sure about Puzzle Fighter.

If you're just looking for something to play on your Vita check out the PSP library. Tactics Ogre, Final Fantasy Tactics, and Jeanne D'Arc are all fantastic and good mobile games. You need a PS3 to buy Jeanne D'Arc but you can transfer it and play it on your Vita.

You know, I happen to have gotten original Warhawk and Twisted Metal...... and they hold up more as remembering the era to which PSOne first lauch. They aren't great but they have this arcadiness thats really charming. I mean get Symphony of the Night in my opinion but don't feel discouraged if you want to check out your first PSone games

How has no one posted about Legacy Of Kain: Soul Reaver? (And to some extend Blood Omen, although you're much better off getting the PC Version).

    Also, Xenogears.

Played FF8 recently, that games still great. MGS would still be fine as would Tekken 2 and Tekken 3. Wipeout 2097 probably hold up fine to (who doesn't love zooming around a track listening to Firestarter?).

Tried Syphon Filter 2 and Pandemonium. Both of which do not hold up. Pandemonium has passwords instead of saves?! Spyro is still cool, just can't play it on my Vita :(

You can't edit titles anymore. Hell, you can't even edit your OP anymore at that. Just a couple of the many issues that are currently plaguing the site, and have been for what feels like forever now.

@dudeglove: The Crash games have aged poorly in my experience. Although they might hold up if you already have a fondness for them.

As for the games that have aged well.

    • Klonoa
    • Xenogears
    • FF9
    • Spyro 1
    • Castlevania SOTN
    • Metal Gear Solid

Except for Spyro, I played all of these for the first time after they had been out for over a decade and they seem to hold up pretty well.

I second a lot on this list, of course a lot of those are nostalgic value for me so I don't know if they hold up per-say if you've never played them before but good over all list.

If you are a fan of the survival horror genre at all I would also throw Silent Hill into the mix, it doesn't hold up the absolute best but if you are a fan of that genre at all it's worth checking out one of the pillars of the genre.

I played Resident Evil Directors Cut for the first time in 2012 and I think it holds up. I've tried three times to get into RE2 and I can't do it.

My only issue with a lot of older PS1 games are that they don't support the analog controls (pretty much nothing from before 1998 does), I think Warhawk would hold up really well if you could just play it with analog controls, the same is true for Descent and Forsaken (neither of which are on PSN though).

The original Silent Hill holds up really well by the way, it really uses the quirks and shortcomings of the hardware to it's advantage, using the poor draw distance to build tension and atmosphere.

I'll have to give a Silent Hill a look. I can honestly say that is one series I've never played before.

Thanks to this thread I went and downloaded a couple of the PS1 games that I have on my account from back when PS+ gave away PS1 games every month. I'm playing Hot Shots Golf 2 for the first time. It holds up and is great on the Vita since you can save your progress at the end of any hole.

Silent Hill, Resident Evil 2, Resident Evil 3, Metal Gear Solid, Symphony of the Night. These do hold up to me, but to someone that has never played them before might be hit or miss. I tried to play Syphon Filter 2 but can't due to how archaic it feels.

Carnage Heart is a mech themed, turn-based strategy game, where the player takes the role of a commander of robots drones. The drones, called Overkill Engines (OKEs), cannot be directly controlled in battle; they must be programmed beforehand to behave/react in a certain way under certain conditions using a flow diagram system.

I say this holds up because, well it still fun. But, I also think that ANYONE who thinks they might want to get into programming should pick this game up. It doesn't teach you a type of programming you can use, but it does text you temperament for learning, testing and critical thinking. The flow diagram programming system is not hugely complex, but it is educational and the game itself provides a platform to "test" your programming and tweaks very quickly. It is not a half bad turn-based, strategy games either.
