Should you stand your PS3 vertically?

#1 Posted by Oedipus (72 posts) -

Hey Team,

So, I have a PlayStation 3 and I was wondering whether or not it was a wise idea to stand it vertically (y'know, so there's more height than base). I know on yonder Xbox 360 this can spell a lot of danger for scratching the hell out of your discs, but does this same problem occur for the PS3?

Thanks.

The ps3 is for standing up as well as standing horizontally so you can have standing vertically if you want. My brother have had his standing vertically for almost a year now without any problems.

Just make sure you stand it up not blocking the fans, its possible to stand it up blocking the airflow and shortening your systme lifespan. Never been a huge fan of putting things vertically, just makes them easier to fall off, so keep that in mind, but it'd be best to keep it horizontal.

dude don't worry, the ps3 isn't a peice of shit like the 360 (i love 360, but that hardware blows man sorry)

Keep it flat in-case of earthquake or drunk gaming.

My stands vertically ever since I got it 2 years ago.

no

Vertical is fine too. It has rubber pads on the side if you haven't noticed. It works both ways like the PS2. Do whatever works best for your situation. =)

Sure if you feel like it....I found horizontal if its in a more enclosed space(same with the 360) to not be a good choice, I have both my systems standing vertically.

If you are not worried about it being knocked over, it shouldn't be a problem.

There's nothing but risk involved with sitting it vertically.

Then why is it vertical in most PS3 ads/store demos etc.? =p

And why is the text on the top displayed so that it looks better vertical? xD
In fact, even the PS logo is rotatable if you hadn't noticed o.O
It's very much designed to be used vertical, with horizontal also being a perfectly safe option. =)

It works fine, no problems will ensue.

Just be sure you're not blocking the console's coolant fans, and the system should be fine.

Standing consoles like the 360, PS2, PS3, and Wii vertically is recommended.  Studies have shown that horizontal consoles cause more wear and tear on the games compared to standing the consoles up.

That's what I've read, and everyone I know who has stood their consoles vertically have had a reduced problem with their games compared to people I know that keep their consoles horizontal.

So there ya go.

Should be fine. I keep mine lying down since if it was standin' up I wouldn't be able to see my TV.

Unless said console is a 360 of course.

The danger with the 360 is the weak magnet they use to hold the disc in the drive. A good bump will cause it to spin out of the tray and skip around scratchingi t horribly. This is what causes the burn rings many gamers encounter.

This is also why they tell you to not move the console while it's running.

The PS3 and Wii (which is designed to stand vertically) don't have this problem. They are all magnetic and don't use a tray like the 360.

no risk at all, i dont have mine standing simply because it wouldnt fit on my tv stand that way, the danger with the 360 standing and even lying down is those dreaded laser burns, vibrations as small as that generated simply by hoovering/vacuming near the console becuase of the poor design in that it uses a disc tray to hol the disc

also blu-ray is a much more robust and durable medium than that of the DVD used for 360 games thanks to the durabus coating... my one outstanding bit of evidence for this is that i work in a games retailer who deal in game trade-ins and to date havent seen a single ps3 game with a laser burn or even a serious scratch on it, meanwhile laser burns on a 360 are a regular occurance, im talking like 7 or 8 an hour, well i think i've went a little off track, erm yeah stand it up lie it down just make sure you twist the little playstation logo round have fun with it alternate on a weekly or daily basis.

Indeed. Blu Ray discs are nigh indestructible. 360, PS2 and Wii discs are often a road map of scratches and pockmarks but to come across a PS3 game with even a faint scratch is a rare occurrence indeed. Blu Ray is just hands down better than the current DVD.

The PS3 logo turns to the side so it's not sideways when your PS3 is placed vertically. I think that is enough of a go ahead to place your PS3 vertically.

There's nothing wrong with having it stay horizontally or vertically. As long as the PS3 gets good ventilation then I don't think you need to worry that much. And mine is vertical and I haven't really had a real big issue with it.

I dont think there is a should or shouldnt here. Works well either way and I have never heard of any proof that going vertical actually hurts anything. I do keep mine horizontal though.

#25 Posted by StressedOutCat (239 posts) -

vertically: the heat can rise up naturally out of the case ( better airflow )

#26 Posted by carlthenimrod (1594 posts) -

Diagonally. Best of both worlds.

#27 Posted by KuroSe7en (32 posts) -

Mine is on vertically and it still works fine. Either way you position it, Sony designed it to be positioned either way.

#28 Posted by Red (5995 posts) -

I do, it doesn't matter.

Also: rotating logo.

Vertically is the way to go, looks cooler :)

#30 Posted by Railer (101 posts) -

Yeah, my PS3 is standing vertically since the day i got it. For me it just fits better into my setup.

#31 Posted by slayerofheroes (214 posts) -

I like having it vertically. Looks more futuristic. And you really shouldn't worry about it falling over cuz the weight of the ps3 balances it since it's pretty heavy. Just don't place it on a high place.

#32 Posted by DCFGS3 (1054 posts) -

I never understood standing it vertically, although it does take up less space, and looks somewhat cooler. I always thought the risk of it falling over was too high, also it' way harder to put disks in on the ps2, the ps3 doesn't have that problem, but i still like gravity to be on my side.

#33 Posted by DuhQbnSiLo (2139 posts) -

Mine has never been laying down

Same here. Except I have a 360 but the idea is the same. :p

It doesn't make a difference besides the fact that you can't knock it over if it's verticle.

I prefer the PS3 to be laying down but you can stand it up if you like.
