Maybe I just don't understand business...but why reveal a new version of the same console when the next console is likely to be revealed soon? Or does this just mean there won't be a next console, a PS4, as soon as people originally thought? =/
In any case, it's a nice looking PS3, and I am honestly considering buying the Assassin's bundle, just cause I like new shit. But do I need it? No...I don't.
Wooo. Plus for vita. Itll be good when theres games and such for it. I like the trophy syncing but automatic firmware updates to a battery dependent device makes me wary. Anybody else with me on that?

So the cheapest model of PS is now going to cost $270? Weren't they selling for $250 before this? Am I missing something or did they seriously announce a price increase?
It's bundle with Uncharted 3 GOTY edition and Dust 514 voucher.
The new versions of current consoles are always revealed right before the next-gen one comes out, it happened with the NES, SNES, PSone, PS2, Game Boy Micro, DSi, and Wii.Maybe I just don't understand business...but why reveal a new version of the same console when the next console is likely to be revealed soon? I have neither a PS3 nor a blue-ray player. Maybe it's time? What big game is coming out for the PS3 this year?

@Nadafinga: Yup, the top of it slides. Here's a video of the British IGN guys trying it out.

Thanks for the link.
I suppose it's probably a cost-cutting measure (the PS2 eventually went this direction too, if I'm not mistaken), but I'm definitely not a fan of the top loading design. It will be a major pain in the ass for those of us that keep our consoles in a cabinet.
I just have to pray my fat PS3 lasts until the next gen consoles arrive.
@jaycrockett: last of us maybe? is that this year? but if you don't already own one there's tooooons of amazing games in the back catalog already, like the uncharted series
My PS3 is in it's dying days and I have some disposable income, if it dies before ps4 i'll probably buy the 250.
Perhaps it's time to finally get a PS3. $269 is a decent price for a good bluray player and some damn good games. I could play The Last of Us!
"...automatic updates ala PS3, and automatic trophy syncing. The last two are a complete joke for a premium service, by the way."
No, multiplayer is a complete joke for a premium service. Automatic updates and trophy syncing are nice, but not that big of a deal. It's a convenience. Locking people out of multiplayer for games they purchased because they haven't paid an additional $60/year on top of that is a shakedown.

Both are a fucking joke. Don't defend that shit.

No, one is a joke, the other is a rip-off. Big difference.

Absolutely this. Everyone just looks the other way when it comes to Microsoft. It blows my mind what they have been able to get away with this generation. It sets a dangerous precedent for the future of games.
Muramasa on the Vita? SOLD! Muramasa was absolutely amazing, and even though I have (and beaten) the Wii version, I'll happily give Vanillaware more of my money.
I'm still rocking my old 60GB PS3, so maybe I'll upgrade to this new one. Have to mull that one over for a while...

Last of Us is next year. So I guess I can wait. Honestly I don't see much on any platform this holiday I really want.
I dislike the plastic sliding door. It just looks cheap. If my PS3 slim dies I'm not sure I'd want to replace it with that. I hate that my PS3 has been lagging more and more on start up. Sometimes it doesn't even reach the xmb before it freezes.
Oh, well, I still of a 360 and another blu-ray player on my PC.
@whatisdelicious: You're exactly right, and this is coming from an Xbox owner. PS+ is a ridiculously good value, so much so it has me considering the next Playstation over a new Xbox. For what people are paying for Xbox Live every year, we should be getting free games like what Sony is doing, even if it's just old stuff. Sony and even Nintendo have more desirable games on their network platforms too.
I don't think its slot loading, at least it doesn't look like it from the pictures.
EDIT: Yeah, I just watched the unboxing video on IGN, it's no longer slot loading.
Fuck. Now I'm going to have to start waiting for the last year of every console's lifespan to get the "pinnacle" model.

What? This is a more cheaply made, uglier version of the console with a bit more hard disc space that you don't need.
YOU DON'T UNDERSTAND. I NEED THE BEST THINGS ALWAYS. Seriously, though, I have a problem. Barely used my last phone, but I almost paid $200 more for a Galaxy S III over a pretty good LG Nitro HD because the former was newer.

No SSD. No 802.11a, or 802.11n, or 802.11ac. Probably not a faster spinning blu ray drive. No software backwards compatibility, no hardware b.c., so SACD (or DVDA), and no Linux. I think one would be better off buying a dirt cheap original 20GB or 60GB PS3, replacing the HDD with an SSD, and buying an external WiFi antennae.
Yeah, there was one point early on in the PS3 lifecycle where I was almost tempted to buy one to replace my failing SACD player. By the time that happened though, they'd removed that feature. I assume that puts me in a super-tiny minority of lost sales for Sony, but I used to buy Sony-everything right up until the mid-90s, and since then they've managed to come up with specific reasons for me NOT to buy every single one of their products. It's not that I hate Sony (their rootkit fiasco actually earned me some cash, a couple cases of beer, and a couple free meals for fixing up machines that were hit by it), but there's just always something that seems intentionally crippled with everything they put out these days.
I rather doubt they only will have bundles from now on, so I'm sure they have a 'plain jane' super-slim in the wings as well, yet they just ain't gonna talk about it when they WANT TO PUSH bundles for the holiday. Keep in mind Sony might have other news they won't release until they can drop it in front of the Wii U launch. Revealing all their cards at TGS seems like the thing to do, that is until you consider that 'some news' will work better or hit harder closer to Black Friday.

The trophy synching thing has always been weird, Sony needs to scrap that shit and find another way to handle trophies.
Automatic updates tho, you know, whatever, yeah, in a perfect world it shouldn't require a Plus account, but the last time I checked, my 360 doesn't do automatic updates, even WITH a Gold sub.
Wow. I guess I'm in the minority on this, but I like the look of the new model. I won't be buying one because I already own a slim and plan on fixing my old fat PS3. It's weird that people get upset over these types of things.
@Krakn3Dfx: Yeah, no kidding. Automatic updates would be great for everybody, but they're not necessary and nobody else offers them for free (or paid) except for Steam, and even Steam doesn't offer overnight patching. So I'm totally fine having that feature locked behind a paywall. It's a convenience feature. It's not like you can't play games without it. As for the trophy stuff, that won't be fixed until PS4. They just didn't build the architecture with trophies in mind, so it's too late. Like cross-game voice chat. This is the best we'll get for now.
@Peanut: Auto-patching and trophy sync are both convenience features. You don't need them. My PS3 experience was totally fine without them, and it's totally fine with them. Nobody else offers auto-patching (on consoles) so I'm fine with the idea that it's locked behind a paywall. Even Steam doesn't offer overnight patching. But multiplayer? If you don't pay for Gold, it's not like you get cheaper games because they don't have access to multiplayer; you still have to pay the same $60 for games where a big chunk of the development cost went to developing multiplayer that you'll never be able to play until you fork out another $60/year. That's fucking ridiculous.
So yeah, locking up overnight patching and trophy sync behind a paywall is not that big of a deal.
