Sony Tease 3D PS3 Games At CES
So apparently those "PS3 games in 3D rumours" were true. Very, very true. Because Ars Technica have experienced Wipeout HD and Gran Turismo 5 Prologue in 3D.
Apparently the demo was "one of the best demos of 3D technology [they] have ever seen." but Sony were quick to comment that it was just a showcase for now...
"We're not going to talk about specifications," said a Sony rep. "This is just a look at what 3D could look like if Sony decided to move in this direction."
By the way the black shades are the kind of glasses you'll need to wear to experience it and the blurry picture a result of the technology at work.
It's Sony's keynote in a few hours and many are expecting them to unveil. Ars Technica closed their article by claiming they've been promised this won't be the last on the subject from Sony, with their keynote to start in a few hours.
Interesting. I've gotta say that the thought of Wipeout HD in 3D literally has me creaming myself even if I do have to wear dumb glasses.
What's the point exactly?
3d is pointless and gimmicky and it hurts my eyes.
I could see potential for this with a racing sim with a wrap around screen, steering wheels, pedals, etc. but besides that, just no.
"What's the point exactly?I guess your eyes must always hurt then, because you see in 3D all the time. And that's why it's not pointless. It brings gaming closer to reality and for the most part increases immersion. This will be the next step in graphical fidelity when photo-realistic 2D imagery is not sufficient.

"Is it so hard to make a pair of aviator 3D glasses? I want to look dope while imagining the blood of my enemies splashing on my face..."
First appealing thing said about 3D games.
Other than that, the concept is a dud.
I imagine it will soon join the hall of failed peripherals along with that fucking lame fighting-ring you put on the floor and stood in the middle of that they released with Streets of Rage in the early 90s.
I think it's a really cool idea. What puts me off is that in order to use the technology you'll need to splash out on special TV's and expensive glasses. I was hearing rumours before CES that Sony could find a way to get this working with just a simple firmware update and a pair of glasses but it seems that's not really a reality. Which is a shame because it would be awesome.
I think the barrier for entry might just be too high for this one. No matter how good it is.

Which is a shame because it would be awesome. The barrier for HDTVs was too high for many as well, but it is gaining momentum. Of course this is not going to be a widespread technology (yet), but I can see something like this as a common option for the next generation. Most games are already rendered in 3D, so it wouldn't be a great deal more work to do something like this if the developer felt it would improve the experience enough. Who knows? This may be the next big trend in media. It would certainly be the best way to experience 3D movies, like James Cameron's Avatar, in your home for now.
