Hello all, Ive been a member of giant bomb for a while but havent really posted (don't think I did) on the forums.
2 days ago (as of this) my 360 redringed; now normally I would send it to MS, but being my 4th broken 360 since launch I gave up (that and the fact that I opened it up to clean the dust and replace the thermal comound because it was overheating all the time). The next step for me was that I bought a PS3 slim (yay hurray for me).

Now, never playing a PS3 (or any PS console other than the PSP) I have no experiance with it.
The thing that got me mad the most would be the controller layout - the thumbsticks being at the bottom instead of the xbox arangement, how do you guys manage to aim and shoot with those, it makes it so uncomfertable, well i guess it will get used to it in time.
Secondly, what good j.rps are there for the PS3 (PS3 exclusives, because chances are I played pretty much every non-exclusive and 360 grpg out there)? I havent been following the PS3 games and don't even know which games are good or not (I only know the good games that are for ps3/360 and the 360 exlusives)
And thirdly, dust - this would probably be the most important issue for me.

Maybe I havent really noticed, but it seems that the PS3 slim is a dust magnet compared to the 360 (maybe its the color). And For some reason my appartment is really dusty all the time (but I vaccum regularely and dust and clean XD). What about the dust in the vents? Call me paranoid but from so many broken [360] consoles I am afraid that a single speck of dust will lead to the overheating and breaking of my PS3.
The instruction manual says to 'use a weak vaccum cleaner' on the vents, but sure, that might clean them out a little, but what about the heatsink and fan inside the console (on the CPU and video chip), will the dust build up there and cause overheating - or can the PS3 even overheat at all (like overheat and shut down). What do I do if that happens? Do I use a compressed air can and blow in the vents?

So any help on the selection of exclusive jrpg/rpg games and the dust issue would be a big help!
Thanks again!

i've been playing playstation consoles since the first one, so i'm very used to the layout (obviously) but the x360 controller is really well made. the older PS3 model (the more shiner model) attracts more dust, but my friend has a slim and i haven't seen any dust on it yet. it didn't take very long for a friend of mine to move from the 360 to PS3 controller.

i'm not really a jrpg person but Valkyria Chronicles is a great RPG-style game with a great art style.

There really aren't a lot of JRPGs on PS3 or 360. Valkyria Chronicles is one of the best available though. If you are into a challenge Demon's Souls is also a quality title (but maybe not if you have anger issues).

I second everyone here . . . you'll get used to the controller quick enough and may even prefer it over the 360 and Valkyria Chronicles and Demon Soul's are both good, unique JRPGs. There's currently not much exclusive in the vein of more standard Final Fantasy-esque games, but you can start catching up on PS1 classics through PSN. I whole heartedly suggest looking into Final Fantasy VII, FF Tactics, Castlevania Symphony of the Night, Metal Gear Solid (1), Silent Hill, Um Jammer Lammy, and Wild Arms to see if those interest you at all (not all are RPGs). You can always pick up PS1 discs on Ebay too. It's too bad PS2 compatibility isn't there, I'd also seriously recommend picking up a PS2 for a hundred bucks if you can. There's a shit ton of amazing JRPGs on that system.

I hadn't played a PS console for years before I got my PS3 last year and I got used to the controls very quickly.  I still prefer Xbox 360's, but I am immediately drop a 360's controller and pick up a PS3 one and have no problem adjusting.

I think you should turn it in and have both the 360 and a Ps3, it's an awesome combo. You'll get used the controller quickly, it's not that different from the 360 one once you have used it for a while.

i feel your pain with the controller. except i was the opposite. being a sony guy while growing up. i was use to the DualShock layout. then once i got a 360 the layout was weird for me. especially when playing madden for the first time and having to pass to the 'X' player.

For your dust problem, I recommend fabric softener.
Simply dampen a dust cloth and put some fabric softener on it,  then wipe your PS3 or anything else that you would like to make dust proof.

Exact same thing happened to me, got fed up of getting my 360 repaired so switched to the PS3.
You'll get used to the controller in no time at all.

Eternal Sonata and Valkyria chronicles are both great games.

Can't help much with the dust though.

Folklore, Valkyria Chronicles, Disgaea 3, and Demon's Souls. Keep an eye out for White Knight Chronicles in early 2010. And you might not want to replay the games, but Eternal Sonata and Tales of Vesperia have exclusive content. There are also a lot of PS1 JRPGs playable on the PS3, some available through PSN.

You can still fix your xbox if you already opened it up. Then you'll have a PS3 and a 360. All you have to do is replace those cheap ass X-Clamps that are holding the GPU and CPU in place on the xbox with something much more sturdy.

All of the above, as well as Cross Edge, also Eternal Sonata and Tales of Vesperia are out with more stuff (than the normal version) if you missed them

Thanks guys for the suggestions!
I will definitely try the fabric softner trick and  wipe it down.
About the fixing of the xbox360, I tried. I fixed the X-clamp issue when I was applying new thermal compound, I don't know why it redrings.
Funny thing is it gives me 2 errors now; the RRoD, and the AV error (the one that tells you that the AV cable is not plugged in). The RRoD is
wonky, it sometimes happens and then other times it works fine, but the problem that killed it is the AV Error (4 rings red), according to websites
the error corresponds to the cable not being plugged in, but the error that I have doesnt match the description, it gives me the error regardless.
I even switched the AV cable (along with other cables) that worked at my friends house.
I think the problem is with the GPU, and the hardware failure also points to that. Regardless, I think I will I just write it off.
Oh well, Thanks again for the suggestions for games and tips! I really appreciate the help!

PS: the game that I really wanted to finish - Star Ocean: TLH, is apparently being ported to the PS3 with more content and characters in Q1/10!
Now I can finally let the 360 rest in piece.

Thanks again!

PSS: any news on a persona for the PS3? XD

Make sure that there is a lot of pressure between your GPU and motherboard as well as the actual case. Make sure that it is super tight and that nothing can move. A few of my friends tried the x clamp fix and it still red-ringed until I came over and did it properly for them.

Also, Enjoy your new PS3. I'll be getting Uncharted 2 soon and have Killzone 2. If you want you can add me - PSN ID: ReubenDR

Its time to change your halo avatar dude! get yourself a solid snake!

The PS3 control is very good, your hand may be already deformed by using the 360 so much, but your hand will evolve to the Dualshock shape eventually...

@ copycatzen
That was pure lolz.
"your hand may be already deformed by using the 360 so much"
And I will change the avatar.

@ Reuben
Tried that, the x-clamps are super secure. I did that about a half a year ago when I changed the dried up thermal compound on the CPU/GPU.
I think the error is with one of the SMT components (possibly one of the ICs).
The AV/Error is the wierdest problem, almost as if the cables are not detected at all, regardless of the cable (they are tested and working).

That's allright tho, I bought Valkyria Chronicles and MGS4 yestarday at my EB games (damn Valkyria is hard to get) for about 50$ total, so time to try them out.

The analog sticks on the DS3 are very sensitive and you can make much better precision movements with it. Pressure sensitive buttons that are used in a bunch of games. Best dpad.

Well after having my PS3 for (looks at calendar) 3 days now, I have to say that I am now getting accustomed to the PS3 controls. But this brings me to the biggest issue that I found...

The triggers (L2 and R2 I think they are called - lol I still have A, B, X, Y going through my head).
I was playing BF: Bad Company, and why oh why did they NOT use the triggers for firing?
Sure, I would have no problem if there was a way to change the control scheme to that, but the fact is there isn't a way to do so.
I prefer the controls something like R2 to be Fire (trigger) L2 to be use grenade (Trigger), the Triangle button to switch weapon, circle to use item, and the d-pad to swap equipped item.

But mostly it's the triggers that annoy me.
I take it that if the alternate settings are not there in the game options, that they do not exist, and there is no alternate way (like through the main XMB(cross media bar PS home screen thingy?) ) to change this?

While I am on that topic, anyone know what the MW2 controls will be like?
Thanks again!

You can pick up clip on triggers that make it more like the 360 at Walmart for like 3$ a lot of people say they like them, I enjoy mine and they feel great.

The problem with the clip on triggers is that they don't really solve the issue. The issue lies with the controller mapping itself; its somewhat hard for me to wrap my head around not using triggers to shoot.

@essaregee: You get used to it over time. Believe me, I've never been a Sony guy but when I got my PS3 it didn't take too long to get settled in. At this point the only major issue is that I still get Circle and Square confused on the odd day.

It's a simple matter of adapting.  Back when I tried to play FPS on the PS2, it felt awkward and odd.  Now I can pick up and play something like Killzone 2 with no problems at all.  I still prefer the 360 pad for console FPS, but it's totally doable for me on PS3 now as well.

I guess if your despite there's Cross Edge, but that was terrible. There's also Atelier Rorona out summer of 2010 and Ar Tonelico 3 eventually.

We've been using them for years.

Any controller takes time to get used to.

For example, when I play a 360 at my friend's house I hate the controller.

Yeah I still think the 360 is the most comfortable controller out there, but the PS3 had it down since the early days of play station. It's a classic layout.

@AjayRaz: Because he probably quoted you, then erased it and quoted someone else?
