I've heard a bunch of people, DLB for one, say that 2008 and maybe even 2009 is the year for the Playstation 3. I think 2008 so far is much better for Sony (addition of trophies, rumble and a video store) , but don't you think that statement is a little bold?
Does "year of the PS3" mean Sony will sell more than Wii and Xbox 360? Or does it mean Playstation 3 will have the best games and the best experience out of the three? In no way is PS3 going to win in sales this year with the competition still going along, but do you think they have the best games/services? Such as Home and LittleBigPlanet? If this is the so called "Year of the Plaststation 3", I sure haven't seen it yet. In fact, It's more of 360's year, soley because of all the Arcade games hitting Xbox exclusively, Like Braid, Geo Wars 2, Castle crashers and so on. And that's just the arcade. This holiday, two of the biggest titles will be on 360 alone, Fable 2 and Gears 2. Even Rock band 2 is making their debut on the system. So what is your opinion on how Sony is doing this year? And do you think they are gaining steam in the industry? Or are they copying as much as they can from the competition?
UPDATE:::THREAD OFFICIALLY 1337!
UPDATE No 2. As the year finally winds down to a close, I think it's time to see it it really is the Year of the Playstation 3. Before I start listing the shortcomings, firstly I will mention Sonys' strides to put the prized PS3 into as many homes as possible.
The outstandingly hyped Metal Gear Solid 4, thankfully lived up the all of the great things people were speculating it would be. Whether you liked the ending or not, Kojima proved once again what a momentous series they had, and how they could make one of the best, if not, the best games in since Ocarina. MSG4 most defintitly kicked off the year on a strong note.
Hoping to add to the roster of great news, Sony finally added rumble to quiet all of the Sony nay sayers, and slipped in a reward system, in the form of Trophies. All were recieved fairly well. The first game to get these added rewards was Uncharted: Drakes fortune. Soon after were Burnout, and a few other update on the Playstation store.
Coinciding was the video store, to compete with the Marketplace offered by Microsoft's XBOX 360. This also was fairly recieved. Not until NXE's Netflix add on did Sony have any concerns. And with Sony saying Netflix is not really needed, they better find a better answer more now than ever, because Netflix has been a huge reason why my 360 is on right now.
This fall, Sony was counting on LittleBigPlanet, Resistance 2 and Motorstorm Pacific rift to bring in the money for the fiscal year.
But did they? With Christmas coming up, let's hope everyone buys all three, because the sales of LBP are lackluster. Selling only in the hundred thousands (much less than hoped for) this highly, highly hyped game wasn't the kind of mascot Sony would be proud of. Resistance 2, also, was a great game, but with Resistance 2 being more of the same (exclusion of Multiplayer :)) Sony also could have used more sales with that title as well. No official sales have been posted, but I wouldn't be suprised to hear it sold rather mediocrely.
Next attempt to sink the competition was the once looked forward to, and now tired title that is Home. Way back, when people actually looked forward to Home, it did seem promising. Now playing the very slow, advertisement heavy, dull software that it is, I can't see this application getting more than 2 hours of use, tops. Looks like people will just use XBOX's Party system on NXE this winter.
So, although Sony added much needed updates in the form of Trophies, Video store, rumble, And with nice additions(game wise) to the almost jokingly thin 2007 PS3 game line up. They have their pros in the exclusive areas. But, with their lack of attention that is Home, lack of innovation that is Resistance, and just plain lack of constant titles, I'd say the year of two thousand and eight was not even close to Playstation 3's year. But next year is a whole different story. Let's just say Killzone 2 is looking better than the almost too real looking E3 05 trailer, and oh yeah, that's 2009 isn't it?
