@TeflonBilly:
The difference being Microsoft didn't make any such promises at all, it was public knowledge from the beginning that they did not hold the patents for the original Xbox chip, and that unless an agreement was reached, there could only be software emulation for the 360. Microsoft announced they would 'do their best' and depending on your opinion, they did or did not. Bottom line was that in terms of what was officially announced, Microsoft said the patent holders (i forget whether it was ATi or nVidia, I think it was ATi) wanted too much money, and so they would use software emulation instead.
Now, they did promise to offer continued support however, which they only upheld for a short time, but in no way did they make as big a deal out of 100% Guaranteed backwards compatability as Sony did. And they certainly didn't remove it altogether for Europe (Home of the most avid Sony supporters and long-time Sony customers, if you dont believe me just check the sales data, the PS3 is so close to the 360 here, it's performing much better than any other territory in comparison, and we had to wait an extra 6 months for it! Sony should be supporting us if they hope to overtake the 360, but they clearly aren't, in more ways than just backwards compatability, which is why I don't yet have a PS3)
