Its frustrating, I wish I could do back-ground download while matching the DVDs. It doesn't happen to the videos in my HDD for some reason, only optical disc.

I would think it's because of the method of which the system plays DVDs. I have no doubt in my mind that it boots into a special mode or w/e to do the job (notice you can't access the XMB while playing a DVD/Blu-Ray). Same thing goes for PS2, PS1 games etc. So, PSN goes offline because you're switching off  (or w/e) the PS3 XMB side of things and using system resources mainly for DVD playback (you wouldn't see this with a video file that's on your HDD cuz you're still in the XMB while playing that).

Ha, thats how I see it anyways. Just noticed that every time I boot something other than a PS3 game my TV looses connection (for 1/2 a sec) from my HDMI/PS3 as the system switches something to get the job done. So - my blurb isn't official, just an idea.

You can still download things when signed out, but I don't know if it will download when playing a dvd.

I wish it would stay signed in for everything, mostly PS2 games because I play them a lot, but I don't want to see a lot of "blank signed in" messages while I'm watching a movie.

I wish Sony wouldn't overlook such a thing. I mean its neat to have a conversation with a friend in ur PSN while watching the DVD/ Blu-ray (the friend can see my status what video I am watching).

I think it's mainly because they think it will disrupt you while your watching the movies.

I don't mind it.
I often sign out when I go to watch a movie from the HDD.
Constant messages and "--- is now online." messages annoy me.

Well, it bother me, its best to give us a choice to be online while watching DVDs (while downloading stuff in the back ground). If you dont like that, you can always sign out.

True, perhaps you should start complaining to Sony, gather others with the same mind set and perhaps they'll implement something in an up coming firmware update? They can't take action if you just sit back here and bitch about it.

Well, since I'm going wireless, Whenever I get dropped from the network its only because I lost a signal.

But you can still download while you are signed off, you just won't receive messages and stuff.

Maybe he doesn't have an HD TV.

It can't really be called background downloading if it doesn't work while playing disc games, dvds, blu-ray discs and some psn games. Lame!

Downloads happen as long as your PS3 is connected to the internet--you don't have to be signed in.  You can background download while watching DVDs and even while completely signed out or after switching to a User profile that doesn't have a PSN account.

Now as far as certain games stopping background downloads, I have no idea why that happens but it's annoying as hell.

I think they do since they use the internet for multiplayer and such, so I would make them stop downloads as well.

That's probably right. I used to think only games that had online multiplayer stopped downloads, but Soulcalibur 4 doesn't so now I'm just confused. I usually just use the automatic download/install before the PS3 shutsdown option or I play Stardust because DL's keep going for that too.

Mine disconnects when I watch Blu-ray but I enabled the auto-login in my account so when I finish watching it, it just automatically signs in for me.

Back when the ps3 first came out, it wasn't always like that.  I remember watching planet earth while I had a demo downloading, and then after one of those updates it wouldn't allow you to do that anymore.  Maybe a future update will reverse this.
