So I just downloaded MediaLink on my MacBook Pro so that I could watch movies on my PS3 and stuff.

I was actually very happy that it worked and everything(I'm a tech noob).

But the probablem is that the video freezes alot. It stops, loads, and starts again.

As you all might have guessed, it's not really an ideal way to watch movies.

So i was wondering if there is a way to make the streaming faster and smoother.

Is it the internet connection or what is it? (like I said, a tech noob)

Thanks.

Well you can try copying the file to the PS3 hardrive if your internet conection isn't fast enough to stream it properly.

I used to have this problem when I installed the regular version of Playstation Media Server, but it went away when I switched to the beta version which was a newer build.  You can find it here.  ( LINK)  I don't know if it will work, but here's to hoping.  Also check the forums for more on how to improve your streaming.

You need a gigabit (1000Base-T)  Wired connection from the PS3 Media Server to the PS3 to really stream HD well.

They don't seem to have an OSX version of that beta on the site.  That won't work for him (or I). Though the native iTunes and iPhoto support seem like great features to have.

A few things to note:

First, make sure it's not just an issue of not enough bandwidth for the movie to play. Make sure you have a great reception to your wifi router and test with it almost side by side if possible.

If that can be eliminated as an issue, the next thing to consider is the format of the content you are trying to play. Various media servers and/or platforms will play different content better than others. I believe that Medialink used to have a problem, for example, with DivX and certain audio formats. The result would be a video that plays just fine . . . except for non-stop stuttering (plays for two seconds, stutters for one or two, endlessly). However, on Playback, it worked just fine.

Next, I would personally advise a very full featured program that works on XBOX 360 and PS3 and other devices called Playback I gladly replaced the Nullsoft product with it and have been using it for awhile, now ($15).

Finally, I would be concerned with the format you are playing. It needs to be supported by the client (note that Playback is working on transcoding features, but there are some licensing issues they're bumping up against). See the lists of supported formats for the consoles, below:

Playstation 3
XBOX 360

If you have other formats that you want to play and are having trouble with them, I'd advise using something like Handbrake to convert your files to another format (which can, granted, be a hassle in many cases).

You are going to need a WIRED connection for HD videos, SD should be fine as long as the network isn't being bogged down by torrents or downloads. Hope you have a good Mac as well.

If you can't do true wired connection i'd suggest getting Home Plugs / Ethernet Powerline plug in adapters.

Anything transcoding as well is gonna cause more stress on the network, you should limit the bandwith from PS3 Media Server to like 10mbps if you are on wireless. You may get grainier video but it won't lock up.

Also the Copy method works too, it may take a while on wireless tho if you don't limit the bandwith as well. As it is physically created a new copy of the video for you on your PS3.
