Is F2P a draw?
I've played several free to play games over the years. I'll play them for a day or two then ditch it. None of them have ever felt that good. Never wanted to put money into them. Maybe they'll do it better on PS4 I dont know. I'll give it a shot, Warframe looks cool.
I have only played one free to play game that I thought handled itself well and that was the most recent Tribes game. I guess it doesn't hurt to have them available, but it's not something that would influence my decision about which console to get. Ultimately, I've never played a free to play game where I didn't wish I could have just paid $60 and had access to everything. I don't like playing one class in a shooter and free to play games usually force you to either do that or pay a crazy amount of money. Also, all of the games you mentioned are shooters or MMOs and those are almost always better on PC anyway.
I'm not exactly a person that swoons for free to play games, but launching with a stable of interesting free to play titles is certainly a pretty smart way to keep people tinkering with the system during the traditional post-launch lull. It's not some sort of big, system-selling thing, for me at least, but it's a smart move for new console owners and certainly increases the system's value. It's basically impossible to be upset about.
@icemo: Thanks, I completely forgot about KI but is there a way to unlock characters through playing or is it just the one character and you have to pay real money for the rest? The F2P games listed above all at least allow you to unlock more content through just playing the game even if some are more gross in their price gauging than others.
Definitely. There is absolutely nothing wrong with consoles supporting free content. Regardless if you can get it on PC, already. I think the internet forgets way too often that not everyone owns a powerhouse PC, or wants to play at 20fps on the one they have.
This won't matter for probably a majority of people who follow gaming news closely but I think it could be quite a big deal for console only gamers who are probably not fond of the whole free to play business model. Personally I would like for the industry to move away from them and invest in more single player experiences or more ethical/sustainable business models. The F2P model has to burst some day. I Hope
While not one of the main draws of the PS4 for me it's still pretty cool to have them. I'm looking forward to checking out Warframe, Blacklight, War Thunder, and Planetside 2. I'm also interested in seeing how Deep Down turns out now that we know it's F2P.
