PlayStation 4 is Sony's fourth home video game console, due out holiday 2013.

PS4 capable of 4K after all?

Erik Kain over at Forbes is reporting that press screen shots for Killzone: Shadow Fall are available in 3840 x 2160 resolution, which is apparently 4K (link). This could mean that the PS4 is capable of outputting 4K.

If this is the case, what do you make of there being no mention of this at yesterday's press conference? Perhaps they are still holding back on revealing new features until future events, such as E3? Would 4K even be a difference maker for consumers who are on the fence about which next-gen console to purchase?

Great now i'll shell out $10,000 for a 4k TV

This will catch on as well as the 3D.

Because 4k is too far off for the mainstream consumer to care about yet and it would have been a regression to the hardware snobbery Sony oozed last time out launching.

If this generation is going to be 5-8 years, then that's probably a necessary move. Plus, Sony is really pushing 4K in their other departments.

Look at it long term, though; in 3-4 years 4K could very well be an established and affordable technology. If that is the case, then it would be a major mark against the PS4 or Durango to omit 4k support. It would be akin to the Wii never adopting proper HD support.

Even if it doesn't, at least it is available if they need it. Better now than shoehorning it into hardware revisions down the line.

4k's really coming? Well, I guess either TVs need to get bigger, or we all need to buy better eyeballs.

They wont do 4k. It makes no sense to even try and support it on the hardware they have.

That's unfortunate. Resolutions steadily increase on PC while consoles are stuck at 1080p for a whole generation?

think about it, 4k is an insane resolution and the ps4 is a mid-range PC... even insane baller as fuck PC's would struggle to run anything good at 4k.. a resolution that isn't even unified...

@baldgye: well at least the console is outputing the same resolution as todays tv's ;)

4k is dumb for anything under 50" unless you're sitting three feet away from it.

I believe it was confirmed that the PS4 supports 4k for everything except video games. It's a logical decision in my opinion, 4k resolutions are the next phase of display technology on the horizon and Sony is just future proofing their console. I'm not honestly surprised either, the hardware in the system should be more than capable of outputting 4k resolutions for simple things like UI navigation.

My very own amateur guesswork says that the PS4 will be capable of outputting 4K resolutions and a small handful of games will take advantage of that, but most will opt for 1080p or 720p or potentially even lower, just like the PS3 is capable of 1080p output but only a handful of games can do that and most do 720p or lower.

@cmblasko: just like ps2/xbox/gamecube with HD

@damisterchief: HD TVs used to be super expensive too, eventually they will go down in price.

Since the PS4 apparently already supports 4K for some things, it should be technically possible to enable 4K for video games at some point in the future. Just not at launch.

It would be a real bummer to see next-gen games display under 1080p, especially since Sony is providing them with so much power to utilize.

@lordandrew: sure, but then we'll end up having the frame rate and jaggies that the current consoles are struggling with @720P.
The PS4 might be able to run games a tad higher than 1080P.

But i think 4K on that thing is pretty unreasonable, atleast for graphically intense games.
stuff like Minecraft or Geometry wars could probably work, But for something like far cry. even PC's are a couple generations off from being able to power 4K along with a decent frame rate and image quality.
