When the fuck would I have 7-8 people playing on one console with separate controllers? Really?

What if you want to play four games of Ikaruga at once and happen to be a spider? WHAT THEN!?

Are you implying the decision for eight controller support was made because Don Mattrick is some kind of man-spider abomination?

I have never seen more than 4 controllers for the same console in a room together. I'm sure it exists somewhere, but that sounds excessive.

8 player Fusion Frenzy is going to change everything and Sony will be 1 step behind

N64 does 4 controllers.

GameCube does 4 controllers.

FalseRelic approves this....

Nobody here has 4K 84" television? Don Mattrick says you should just stay with your 360 "losers"

#62 Posted by jgf (366 posts) -

@nonused: Hate to be that guy, but you use two hands for a single controller, so you actually need to be an sedeopos. Or would you like to enjoy two player sessions with your octopus friend? Then the math works out. <\nerdmode>

Can't say I ever used more than 4 controllers on any console, even my PS3. Every now and then we would have a get together with beer/pizza and play Madden or NBA 2K, but I only had 2 controllers and two of my friends would bring 2 more.

That's a rarity nowadays anyway...since I've been married and most of my other friends are engaged/married/etc, most of my gaming time is solo or 2 player coop online. So none of this really bothers me at all. I can't imagine a situation where I would have 8 people in one place all trying to play a game at the same time!

#64 Posted by MonkeyKing1969 (2286 posts) -

Well, PS3 supported seven Bluetooth devices - Joypads, mice, keyboards, headsets, wheels, sticks etc. I don't think Sony ever though seven people would play a game. The PS4 now has controllers with less latency, I would trade three other devices or four faster communicating devices any day.

I can't say this for sure, but my guess is when PS4 and XBox One are tested for refresh and resolution that someone will be testing button and controller latency wired and wireless. Who knows which one will have less latency, but my guess is evereything is equal when wired and wireless will be the disputed ground of warfare.

#65 Posted by GERALTITUDE (2812 posts) -

Well with a few multi-taps you could have like 22 players on PS2 so there, what do you think about that?

This just means I'm going to need a much bigger TV than my 55" when I eventually get an Xbox One in a year or two so it can handle 8-player split-screen games without making things impossibly small to see.

100% pizza bet no 8-person split screen games ever come out. This is for sports games only.

I only ever use one controller at a time, so this doesn't affect me at all.

Exactly. MS hasn't shown what the hell would be great about having that many people playing locally also people still care that much about local play?

#68 Posted by Random45 (810 posts) -

How could you even play with eight people? You'd need a huge TV, otherwise it would be way too small to see what you're supposed to be doing. That isn't even mentioning the fact that you'd need to actually cram 8 people into a pretty tight spot.

#69 Posted by Marcsman (2895 posts) -

Big deal. I had 7 controllers and never had more than 4 going at once.

#70 Posted by Zaccheus (1770 posts) -

I have never owned more than one PS3 controller.

#71 Edited by TyCobb (1924 posts) -

Hmm, I think I would be fine if they only supported 1.

#74 Posted by Superdude201 (62 posts) -

Tbh i'm a bit disappointed it's only going to be 4, played loads of fifa with 6 of us in the same room. Stuff like local Buzz play as well which was 8. Loads of people missing out on gaming with a decent number of friends on a console within the same room if people can't see why it would be nice to have more than 4 controllers at one time. Although to be fair it was hard to find games which did support the use of 7 controllers, so there's probably not a lot of point including it when you only get a handful of games where you can get any use from it.

#75 Posted by Sooty (8082 posts) -

I only play machines capable of 10 inputs simultaneously because fuck that noise.

#76 Posted by LiquidPrince (15632 posts) -

Who the fuck cares? I never played with more then 4 controllers anyways.

#77 Posted by isomeri (1177 posts) -

I've played NHL once with 7 controllers and 7 dudes. It was totally rad, but we needed a huge space with a projector and everything. I think its more important to know how many people the camera can recognize at once.

#78 Posted by ICantBeStopped (319 posts) -

My couch can't support seven asses. What's the big deal? Four players for what's happening on screen is about the practical limit.

#79 Edited by ll_Exile_ll (1274 posts) -

I have never used more than one controller on the PS3, and the only times I ever had more than 2 people playing on the 360 was Rock Band.

#80 Posted by ninnanuam (216 posts) -

I dunno sure your not gonna play an fps but couldn't rockband 3 on ps3 have 7 players? I only have rb3 for 360 but that sounds like a good fucking time.

Xbone just cornered the spider and octopus market, RIP PS4.

#82 Posted by awesomeusername (4060 posts) -

No one here has a home theater? Ha! Mattrick was right, stick with 360's. Damn peasants.

/s

But seriously. I don't even like playing 2 players locally. If I ever get a second PS4 controller, it'd be because the current isn't working well or I want another color. C'mon Sony! Pink & white PS4 controllers please!

Now I have a reason to get three friends...or dump three friends.

I can still play with me, myself, and I right? What the problem is?

#84 Posted by Hunter5024 (5187 posts) -

I have a hard enough time getting four of my friends together simultaneously. I didn't even realize that the Playstation 3 supported that many. There are only four lights.

#85 Posted by Missacre (566 posts) -

This is the epitome of first world problems.

#86 Posted by Humanity (8005 posts) -

"8 controller support" drops mic - everyone cheers while the unwashed PS4 masses shuffle out of the White House, heads hung low in shame for the empty 4 controller life they've chosen.

#87 Posted by MonkeyKing1969 (2286 posts) -

The best way to think about PS4 is how many Bluetooth devices does it support. Sony says four controllers, but in that might be them leaving some Bluetooth slots open for headsets, keyboards, mice...other stuff.

It is also worthwhile to keep in mind the protocol used by PS3 and PS4 are different, backwards compatible for PS3 stuff, but different. PS4 uses Bluetooth 2.1+EDR, it is faster but also more secure to man-in-the-middle attacks. The pairing between PS3 and DS3 were always pretty easy, but for what it worth Bluetooth 2.1+EDR should make all other Bluetooth devices a bit easier to link to the PS4 while being more secure as well.

#88 Edited by harinosho (588 posts) -

hmmm.. I never had people over to play, thats why we have the internet.

I bought myself a second controller because I was too damn lazy and impatient to wait for my ps3 controller to recharge before I could play a game.

#89 Posted by Lava (630 posts) -

I imagine it's limited to four so it can be paired with other devices as well, such as move controllers and headsets. Plus a game that supports more than four players on one console on the same screen must be insane. Rendering two different images can be taxing if it's split screen, I can't imagine four or even more than four to be that great of an experience. And who wants to buy eight controllers?

#90 Edited by CynicalBuzzard (238 posts) -

4 controllers is enough for me, why would I ever want to use more than that?

#91 Posted by Tarsier (1052 posts) -

who has ever used more than four controllers on one console?

#92 Posted by scorch62 (103 posts) -

I haven't used more than two since, like, 2004.

#93 Posted by Sooty (8082 posts) -

I once played Smackdown vs. Raw about 10 years ago with 6 other people.

Once.

#96 Posted by THRICE_604 (210 posts) -

I have never needed to own more than two controllers for 360 and PS3. There is absolutely zero need to do that. And if you need more it is at most four people playing and its not hard to have someone bring their own controller. And having support for eight controllers is absurd and just a bullet point as the number of games that will use it over the course of the the console's life will probably be countable on one hand.

#97 Edited by LiquidPrince (15632 posts) -

The max I've ever used is four so this works out perfect.
