Well, he is right, but that doesn't mean there is anything wrong with it.
These days, it is almost impossible not to create something that could be called a rip-off. Not just in video games, but in any medium.

Well, let's be brutally honest here: It is a blatant rip-off. No, not the fact that Sony creates their own cross-over brawler (Nintendo didn't "invent" either of the two things), but the way how it all comes together. The way it looks, is structured, will most likely play - it all just screams at the top of its lungs: "I hope we can copy Smash Bros. story of success." They didn't even try to be original, or so it seems at this point.
But I still fail to see why that is supposed to be such a big deal. It's not like ripping off successful concepts is anything new in this (or any) line of business - blatant or subtle.

Oh boy, a teabagger that can't spell. You know the nazis are here when you see that flag and the horrible spelling.
I must be stupid too, but I'm from that country. Which word is spelled wrong?

No shit kojima go back to metal gear
uhh...
Yeah, but I also thought it was kojima at first glance, then I read it again.
Also, of course it's a ripoff, but I like my playstation characters more than I like the nintendo ones.
Regardless of the inaccuracy of the reference, his statement stands true.

I don't now about what anyone else thinks, but this dude is being kind of a complete fucker.
All he did was state his opinion of the game on Twitter and then started manhandling the fanboys coming out of the woodwork. That's not exactly being a complete fucker.
Saying that Sony threw away their morals by making this game (or whatever the hell he's saying) is, though.
Nope. Because once again, that's his opinion.
He's allowed to have his opinion, but he's being a complete fucker about it. He's just stating a thing (a thing which insults everyone who's pouring their heart and soul into PS All-Stars), not backing it up with anything, and then proceeding to insult people who are just asking for the reasoning behind his thoughts. And saying that making a similar game is morally bankrupt is absolutely ridiculous; that condemns entire genres which exist on shared gameplay mechanics, like RTS games and FPS games. All-Stars is not the first, nor will it be the last, arena-based fighter, and it isn't any less for using Smash Bros. as an inspiration.
He's not wrong, but he's being a real cocksucker about it. Does he expect us to live in a world where there is one franchise per genre or gameplay style? Doesn't that preclude him from making his own style of game since he doesn't make DMC anymore? Vanquish is a cover shooter, Project 100 is a Pikman game.
Games are becoming exactly like music and film for me; the guys who make art I like I find personally repellant. The guys who I do like personally, I can't say I like most of their work (Paul Barnett, David Jaffe). Now I think Hideki Kamiya is an arrogant shithead. I guess that's the new magic of the social networking world.
Kind of weird that he'd get so worked up about this. I mean, he didn't work on Smash Bros. at all, did he?

I suddenly feel the urge to play Outfoxies (1994).
Dude! That looks awesome! I can't believe I've never heard of it before. It looks a little like The Showdown Effect.
@Berserker976: Considering he created both DMC and Bayonetta, I'd say not. I doubt he'd call SSB: Brawl a ripoff of the original SSB.

Okami borrows heavily from Zelda and Project P-100 borrows heavily from Pikmin. The base is the same as the game it takes from but builds on it interestingly like with the paint mechanic in Okami and the ability to punch things with people in Project P-100. I feel like PSA:BR builds on the SSB formula considering how you defeat you're opponents, build a super meter, the stages being combinations of franchises, Sony's willingness to use insane characters. The problem is that it looks the most like the game it takes from and barely anyone has played it. For Okami it's hard to know it borrows from Zelda until you play it and with Project P-100 Platinum games have such a good reputation that people will let anything they do slide. This is a new developer from one of the big three platform publishers. People do not want to even give this game a chance. This game could have a lot that's different from SSB but because it doesn't have a public demo yet and all you have is a few pictures and video people are just bombing this game.
SSB needs more direct competition like this, everyone else that has tried it has either didn't have a lot of clout or were released only in Japan. Dissidia doesn't compete because it's so different from SSB as well as being a PSP exclusive. Sony and Microsoft are the only ones that could compete with SSB.
I hesitate to call this game a rip off yet because it means that it is inferior to the original product. We have to wait for it to come out for us to really know.
Hideki Kamiya's twitter is basically the only reason I still use that thing.
One might at best say that Kamiya's games are inspired by something but they always stray so far from the source that it's forgivable. RE2 is a revered title, DMC pretty much set the standard for every amazing action game to come and he exceeded his own game with Bayonetta.
Whereas Playstation All-Stars: Battle Royale looks incredibly bland and everyone with half a brain can see that it's nothing more than an iterative rip-off of that one Nintendo game.

So, uh, Mr. Kamiya... does that mean Bayonetta is a rip-off of DMC?
I hope that post is not serious in any way. I think it isn't.

I left out don't in a horrible late night typo. It should've read "I don't understand".
@EvilKatarn: yeah, it's serious. I know he essentially created both games, but it's not like it's the same franchise. One was a capcom game, one was a sega game.
If the director of SSB had gone and helped make Playstation All-Stars would that suddenly make this game not a rip-off in your eyes? Otherwise it still seems like a weird double standard.

Meh, I know. I didn't like the OP confusing Old Glory with nazi paraphernalia. I was getting into position to give him a tune-up. I'm not mad at him. I'm tired of the casual bigotry.
I don't even necessarily agree with your comment. Japan has gone to great lengths to communicate with the world, and I understood what was in all the pics. I'm not even that smart. No disrespect meant.
Anyway, carry on Sir.
Whoa! Hideki Kamiya is spitting out Tweeting gold here. I don't blame him. PlayStation All-Stars Battle Royale is a rip-off of Super Smash Bros. and I predict that it's gonna suck just like TMNT: Smash Up, which is another rip-off.
@Berserker976 Bayonetta improved DMC's action formula, not to mention that the game looks entirely different from DMC. Kamiya hasn't made two games which would look similar.
PS AS:BR looks like a lackluster game, a ripoff and an inferior game to Smash Bros. Those are my opinions, of course, but I think they're right.

One could have easily made that same argument before Bayonetta had come out. ;)
@Berserker976: Possibly. I don't know if I didn't see all those comments or if I didn't follow gaming as much back then, but I was maybe a bit too stoked for Bayonetta before release to comment on that.

This made ma laugh. Thank you.
I constantly come up with 2D fighters where EA fights Ubisoft and Square rights Konami and so on.I love how this is the kind of thing everyone dreams about.
I'm sure a lot of us have thought, "Imagine if they made SSB for other consoles with all their own characters, that would be so awesome!"
Good to know if it actually does happen people flip their shit.
