Anonymous did it.
" ...dude, a real hacker could've just put that there for fun. "This. They're the best scapegoat in the world because of all the DDOS bullshit they were doing. Just put a little text file on the server while you're there, and bam - they aren't looking for you, they're looking for them.

" @KaosAngel said:I just don't get how people say that doing a DDOS attack using the LOIC makes you a legit hacker. A fucking tween can just do it and bring down Giant Bomb if he wanted to, it's not hacking. Whatever though, use them as a scapegoat and the guy(s) who did it get away free." ...dude, a real hacker could've just put that there for fun. "This. Of course they did. How can they even say that they didn't? They're anonymous.
Unless each one of them is going to come out and publicly say, "My name is ____________ I am a member of Anonymous, and I did not take part in hacking PSN", then they are all to blame. Even still I wouldn't believe them, but at least the feds could go back and look through their hard drives and such and search for any evidence. My point is they are guilty by association.
" Is it bad that I don't believe Sony anymore? :P "It's bad that you're a decade too late in doing so.
- Sony called to Congress to answer questions of how this situation happened.
- Sony sends letter instead saying they are too busy researching hack - whole company ensconced in research.
- Sony distracts with finger pointing at Anonymous.
" People realize that Anon isn't actually a body you can point at, right? It's just as good as saying random people from the internet did it. "Are you telling me where all in anonnymous?
Here is the letter to committee from sony, makes an interesting read.

In their own words
Sony has been the victim of a very carefully planned, very professional, highly sophisticated criminal cyber attack.
" @Ahmad_Metallic said:you and your... getting my SP references <3 ! (no homo)" SIMPSONS DID IT SIMPSONS DID IT !! "Oh you and your South Park references <3 "
I'm telling you Anonymous is in all of us!" @Slaker117 said:

But seriously, the "Anonymous" label means nothing. That's the point.
" People realize that Anon isn't actually a body you can point at, right? It's just as good as saying random people from the internet did it. "THANK YOU. Any Joe Blow that pops into 4chan is part of "Anonymous". And "Anonymous" covers the whole site, not just /b/ (the part that tends to instigate this shit). As a user of some of the more "civil" boards there, I despise being lumped in with those idiots.
What does Anon gain from doing this? This type of attack (towards millions of consumers) is not their cup of tea. Their beef was over once the GeoHotz issue was resolved. I just don't get Anons point of view with this attack. This is not their MO.
But yo, this probably still has nothing to do with that amorphous blob of a "group."
It's like Rockstar and the Hot Coffee shit all over again. Only this time it's actually dangerous." Here is the letter to committee from sony, makes an interesting read.

4Chan isn't exactly a bastion for all that's good, but this doesn't seem like something they'd be into. It's not exactly easy for me to say they operate with a code of ethics but they've shown more interest in protecting everyday people, not taking advantage of them. It'd be a PERFECT solution to throw around words like "Anonymous" and "We Are Legion" and have no one question it's validity whatsoever, an easy out if you will. Sony looks like a little kid pushed into a puddle instead of the irresponsible company we saw them as yesterday. So really, it would be in their best interest to say this even if it weren't true. This kind of thing happens all the time in the name of swaying public opinion and perception back to something akin to a positive light. It's fairly transparent, actually.
" @Daveyo520 said:The thing is, as easy as it is to make Anonymous a scapegoat in all of this, it is quite possible that at least some people that consider themselves a part of that group did in fact perform the hack. And since Anonymous is such a loosely organized internet clusterfuck with little to keep its members in line other than good faith, it doesn't take more than the actions of a few bad apples from their ranks to spoil the reputation of the whole bunch. While it might be difficult to prosecute a loose internet collective, it's not that hard to turn public perception against them and reduce the concept of Anonymous to the retarded 4chan joke it all started as." For the people defending Anon, you do know they are all troll jerks right? Also what if they did do it and are only denying it because everyone hates them for it? "Who's defending? "
Also, 4chan =/= Anon
I'm sorry, I respect you and recognize what you said as an intelligent analysis of the mess that is what Anon has come to mean, but where exactly are you coming from with it?
I've barely gotten any sleep, so maybe I'm missing something, but it seems tangential. I understand the possibly that people who associate themselves with the label could be responsible and I also understand the label isn't usually used for truly malicious attacks. I'm very unclear on what point you're trying to make, and how that relates to my question. I was simply wondering who in this thread was defending Anon, because I didn't interpret any posts to be taking that position.
Sorry for the overlong response to something that doesn't matter, but I'm simply very confused at the moment and really probably should not be awake.
I like how so many people are referring to Anonymous as an entity, rather than a random array of morons and criminals. "We know they did it! They left their trademark calling-card: Indistinguishable 4chan phrases".
That should narrow it down a little.

A user of 4Chan, someone who refers to themselves as Anonymous, the rest of the internet at large can literally be any kind of person, so placing any kind of blame on these nebulous collections of folk seems pretty meaningless to me.
I can't help but think they're just dropping the name on there so the media outlets have something to latch onto.
Now instead of hearing: SONY'S network was hacked
People will hear: Sony's Network was hacked by a group calling themselves ANONYMOUS.

" @Tebbit said:I feel like it's hard for people who have had no experience with 4Chan or Encyclopedia Dramatica to really comprehend what Anonymous is because protest groups in our culture have traditionally been well defined and with certain morals; and when there's a subset of that group that no longer agrees with the main group, they split off and form their own unit. I think this makes it easy for these people to look at the more defined, vocal groups that use Anonymous' name (AnonOps, Project Chanology, etc.) and try to define Anonymous that way, not really realizing that not only is that not what Anonymous is about, but there are a ton of people that use said moniker that hate these groups."
