What did I say about trolling?!

Posted by Burn1n9m4n (261 posts) -

So I've talked about it. Alex Navarro has talked about it. Brad Nicholson has talked about it. But to recap....PSN is down. Now I'm all for humor, but I think that IGN may have played this card a bit too soon.

Now I don't know if you guys had heard about it, but I thought that I would bring it to everyone's attention. IGN...I get what you were trying to do. You were trying to make a light hearted jab at the recent network problems that PSN has been facing. Seriously...I get it! Given your timing though I think its going to be interpreted as more of a stab than a jab. Plus aren't there rules against trolling? I distinctly remember an article about this very issue. Anyway the more important issue is that your colleagues in the journalism community also think that you went a bit too far. You've also probably alienated a good percentage of your fanbase and have ignited a flame war on your own site. As I don't feel that your behavior deserves any attention I have not decided to link to your article. Instead I have posted the above screenshot that has been making its way around the net.

To anyone else reading this, if you want to find the article do a Google search of the title. Again I think its funny, but having said that I can also say that its in pretty poor taste.

*Update*: Apparently IGN is now down, and already the following is making its way around the nets:

Oh the hubris!

Considering the user base of their website that is a pretty bad move.

#3 Posted by Commisar123 (1791 posts) -

Well I thought it was funny

#4 Posted by TorMasturba (1095 posts) -

Also they actually have a podcast solely focused on PS3 games journalism so this's definitely a dumb move on their part.

#5 Posted by Burn1n9m4n (261 posts) -
@Commisar123: I think its funny, but I also strongly believe the timing for this joke is terrible. They could have just as easily have waited until PSN's connectivity was restored before making this joke. Then I think their audience would have been more apt to enjoy it.
#6 Posted by Burn1n9m4n (261 posts) -
@TorMasturba: Oh wow! I wasn't even aware of that! Yeah definitely a bad move then...

We all know IGN is a shitty site.
I was excited to see a Motorstorm: Apocalypse review, but I couldn't get over how badly written the review was. Here's a screenshot from the review. Can you tell me what the hell is going in the "Lasting Appeal" section. Do they edit anything over there?

Eh, some like a cheap reaction?
I wouldn't read too much into it..  but, it does amateur up the site a little bit, unfortunately.
Then again, who's Kristine?

#10 Posted by Bollard (5432 posts) -
@Surkov: Are you talking about it from a grammatical perspective, or because they gave 8.5 for something that doesn't work? Cause as far as I can see the grammar is fine... but your picture is really small so maybe I'm reading it wrong.
#11 Posted by Weltal (2273 posts) -

If anything I'd say Kristine is specifically trolling Greg Miller for this article.

Meh.

#12 Posted by Burn1n9m4n (261 posts) -
@Weltal: But see, IGN is just playing its fanbase against...its fanbase? Why do that? Don't do that in print, do it on a gaming podcast and have everyone be apart of the joke.

@Surkov: That last sentence does need some work...

#13 Posted by Weltal (2273 posts) -
@Burn1n9m4n: I don't believe they're doing that at all. I believe they though it would be funny and, in retort Kristine thought another article would be funny. I'm not sure it really matters that some people will take these articles way too seriously and start fan-boying out.

At this point where Sony isn't even sure whether the safety of our information has been compromised, I think jokes are not the right way to go about it.

The irony is not lost on me. FUCK IGN!

Shit like that happen people should understand that, especially if they are getting it for free. I don't know who wrote the article but you should blame the main editor who published that piece of garbage. It really is a cheap move.

#21 Posted by NegativeCero (2995 posts) -

If you're talking about that comment Microsoft made about PSN being down, IGN weren't the only ones to post a story on it. But yeah, totally unnecessary.

#22 Posted by Burn1n9m4n (261 posts) -

I kinda hope that their site being down is not just them committing to their joke. I really hope it is down.

The last sentence under Lasting Appeal says: " Good job the offline splitscreen works so well, then."

Which makes no sense.

My incorrect grammar was a comment on the article's poor use of grammar.
#29 Posted by EndlessObsidian (475 posts) -

I'm officially done with IGN albeit I only listened to some of their podcasts from time to time. This article/editorial was very tasteless and did not need to be published on a large site such as IGN. The whole pissing off and igniting a war with the fanboys is the LEAST of IGN's worries IMO. The publication of this article to me, seems like a horrible decision which would only lead to terrible relations with Sony. Doesn't seem very business savy.

Looking back on this I like the use of periods after the yes or no in those pics. Just stands out and its pretty funny to me.

Cheap or not, Sony need to get their goddamn act together. This is fucking terrible and they're bleeding brand trust by the second.

OK as stupid as this is going to sound, I've been racking my brain trying to think of why that sentence doesn't sound right to me. Its the usage of the word 'job' that's making my sense of grammar take a walk off the map. After looking at the article again though I realized its on IGN UK so maybe its a UK sentence construction....or something. Fuck I don't know. I'm confused. :-/

Haha, I knew this was a language barrier thing. In the UK and Australia among other places, 'good job' is used as a compliment.

Yeah, I've just read through that multiple times, and there isn't a grammatical error to be found. Maybe the could have hyphened split-screen...?
#42 Posted by IBurningStar (2164 posts) -

If it wasn't for the fact that we are still unsure if personal information for PSN users could have been compromised then I probably would have found this to be funnier. If it turns out to be true then later on this will seem like it was done in poor taste.

#43 Posted by Burn1n9m4n (261 posts) -
@EVO: In US English its also used as a compliment, but if with this sentence it would probably have read something more like: "Good thing the offline splitscreen works so well." Which would have made more sense in context (at least for me anyway...) If they wanted to use 'Good job' they probably could have said it differently or had the phrase 'good job' used as a standalone sentence as is the case in US English. However, if they did that it would probably come off as being a bit sarcastic and snarky. But you can use it that way correctly in US and AUS English, eh? Interesting....learn something new everyday.

Bah. If your still getting annoyed at people bitching and whining over the "console wars" shit get over it. Who cares? Its IGN. One large a-hole games corporation is as bad as another.

You would think they were making jokes about Japan.

.....oOoOoOo too soon.

Haha you have a point there - "splitscreen" is definitely not a word in its own right!
