Yeah, Maybe I Do Want To Watch The Wire On My PS3
Starting this afternoon, you won't necessarily have to set your DVR to catch that old episode of True Blood or Big Love if you have a PS3 or PSP. Sony and HBO have teamed up, inking a deal that places HBO's original programming on the PlayStation Network. Past seasons from the aforementioned shows, as well as Entourage, Eastbound and Down, The Sopranos, Sex and the City, The Wire, Rome, Da Ali G Show, Curb Your Enthusiasm and Flight of the Concords are all available--for a price--via the new HBO channel on the PlayStation Store.
A quick peek at the ol' Store reveals that the pricing fluctuates between the shows, with most of them going for $1.99 per episode. Rome, The Sopranos, and True Blood, however, will run for $2.99 each. That seems like it could get pretty pricey in the long run as there appears to be no way to buy an entire season of a show at some sort of reduced price.
Not digging any of these shows? It's alright; keep looking forward to the day George R. R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire, a tremendously awesome fantasy series (which is also getting its own game courtesy of Cyanide), hits the service. HBO and Martin are reportedly working together (via GeeksofDoom) in order to spit out a pilot for the initial season which will be based on the his first book in Song of Fire and Fire, A Game of Thrones. Granted, it could be 2020 by the time we see Martin's work come to life via PSN, but it's better than not having it. Or something.

Shame I already have most of those on DVD.
By the way, the GeeksOfDoom fellows got it wrong about Game of Thrones, they filmed pilot last year and the show got greenlight on that. Filming on the first season begins in July I think. I can't wait, combining two of my favourite things: HBO drama series and A Song of Ice and Fire.
Anyone who thinks $1.99/$2.99 is too much for one episode of these awesome shows is a foolish fool of a Took.
Interesting... My Netflix que is full of HBO shows yet to be released. If I can get them now via PSN I will gladly pay.
I just use Rogers on Demand and get this all for free (paying for the cable service, but have to pay for internet too). I'm in Canada so can't get this off the PS3 anyway, but I'd rather have the rogers service of free than 'for a price'.
I love how people are complaining about this feature as if Sony is trying to wedge them into some sort of corner.
Stop trying disguise the fact that they are simply providing an alternative way to watch the shows you already enjoy.
No one cares if your way is "better" or that you don't want your HDD to be cluttered. It's just an alternative.
Like I'll say for all micropayments like this where you could possibly find it for free somewhere else at another time:
It's nice to have the option, and if you don't want it, don't buy it. Giving people options and it costing you next to nothing to do it is always good business.
You can't subscribe like people have been doing through cable since forever? This kind if integration is a great idea but I'll jump on the wagon when it's the same price as an HBO subscription.
So at $2 - $3 an episode I'm looking somewhere between $24 - $36 for a 12 episode season? I know there's the convenience of having it there to watch instantly, but I'm not sure that convince equates to a price that is marginally less than a box set of that same season.
Oh well, I don't live in the US, so I'm sure I'll never even see an option to watch HBO on my PS3.
