PSPGo: further proof that Sony Computer Entertainment is run by idiots.
PlayStation Portable

PlayStation Portable (PSP) is Sony's first entry into the handheld gaming market. The PSP also sports multimedia features including music and video playback, a photo viewer, and an online store. Several model revisions have been released: the PSP-2000, 3000, PSPgo and the PSP-E1000.
More Evidence PSPgo On Its Way Out
When I re-bought a PSP it was only ever the 3000 that I considered. The lack of a UMD tray just meant that you were limiting yourself to what games you could play, never saw the appeal myself.
" That fact that Sony failed to come up with a UMD-to-digital-download path for games already owned killed the Go out of the gate. "This.

"I don't know what these screen issues with the 3000 are about. I don't see them.As for form factor, it's a really nice device. Doesn't have the screen issues of the 3000 and is much nicer to hold than any previous PSP I've tried"
I like my Go. Truly pocket size form factor and no messing around with dumb UMDs. Sure there is no backcompat and you can't trade in your games but...I'm an adult. I buy and play games pretty much once. Twice if they are great. If I recommend a game to a friend I'll expect them to pay for their own copy.
Basically the haters are whiny broke-ass kids. Which consequently is the target demo of portable systems, so Sony did make a pretty big mistake. The only major problem (besides misaimed demographic) was the fact that Sony did not make digital release a prerequisite for PSP titles from the Go launch forward. Every game should have been downloadable day and date. Would that have been so hard?
Yup." The PSPGo was dead when it was announced
I've never even seen one. It's strange for a device like that to come out and not know at least one person who has one.
" Sony need to get their act together with this handheld stuff or just not do it at all. I think the NGP is doomed to fail purely because of it looks too much like the old PSP?"I'm kind of with you. But it's not so much that it looks like the PSP per se, as it is what that fact is indicative of. The NGP at this stage looks like being "more PSP than the PSP!". Sony have learnt their lesson about how to make a good PSP...
Never seen one, don't know anyone who has/had/wants one, have no want for one myself....ever. Seemed doomed from the gate. A lot of people say "Sony is too ambitious, too far ahead of its time blah blah." I think it was just plain stupidity. Did they even do any market research? Hard to believe they did. That's my two cents.
" @Jensonb: Yeah it's such an investment to have a standalone handheld device for just gaming when you look at some of the games coming out for the smartphones which are more or less a bonus feature to your all in one device e.g. Samurai Girl. It's just an example but that sort of stuff will eventually catch up to the 3DS and PSP without the need to make a separate hardware investment and carry a second device. "Yeah, and I'm not sure Sony realises Nintendo has isolated themselves from that threat slightly more effectively cos the the 3D and stuff. NGP can't really be home to unique experiences like the 3DS can.
" Shame... the PSPgo is the best version of the PSP hardware-wise. If only Sony supported it better... "I'm with you, I was interested until they broke the UMD Transferral promise and announced the ridiculous price point. The fact they dropped the ball on ensuring all the games went ont PSN compounded the problem. If they'd supported it better and priced it more realistically, I might have got onboard, i actually really liked the hardware itself - I found it much nicer to hold than the regular PSP.
Think Xperia Play phone, that is the child of the PSP Go. Sony (or Sony Ericcson rather) believed to have developed the Xperia Play based on the PSP Go (externally they look rather similar).
The PSPgo was basically amazing for pirates. 16 gigs of internal storage, plus a slot for a memory card? For an extra $40-50? The lack of UMD didn't hurt them at all, and they aren't limited by which games go up on PSN. For the actual consumer, though? Seems pretty much completely pointless.
... you mean if only it played existing UMDs instead of requiring you to buy your games all over again...
Sony's problem is they don't understand marketing. They don't know who to target at so they try everyone, and fail.150,000,000 PS2s sold would seem to disagree with all four of these statements. The main reason is, Sony is an electronics company. Gaming is only a small segment of the company.
Anyway, Gamasutra and 1Up have SCEA on record saying PSPGo will continue in North America.
If this thing came out for 200 instead of 250 and had day and date release with UMD it might have been successful. It's a bummer either way
It's a shame they're abandoning the go, the idea is pretty solid, but most consumers I know aren't ready to cut the cord to that extent.
