Sony need to get their act together with this handheld stuff or just not do it at all. I think the NGP is doomed to fail purely because of it looks too much like the old PSP?

@RiotBananas: Ridiculous is a bit harsh, as the look of  the device is a huge selling point esp. in an Apple heavy portable landscape. The PSP hasn't done well outside of Japan so why release the next attempt in pretty much the same shell as the failed version? I'm almost certain that device won't appeal to the mainstream on first impressions.

When I re-bought a PSP it was only ever the 3000 that I considered. The lack of a UMD tray just meant that you were limiting yourself to what games you could play, never saw the appeal myself.

Still I can't help but feel a little sad, I really like the PSP and am giving it more time than anything else at the moment. Its just a shame that my overriding memory during its initial release was always searching for new games to play, it was an utter wasteland. Case in point is that I sold it about a month or two after I had bought it, only before the new year did I bother to buy a new one.

The UMD situation was ridiculous also, I seem to remember the original prices for games being on par with those on the home console.

One of Sony's dumbest products. It could have been good. But they literally made it impossible to upgrade to one if you already had a PSP.

Haters are using these little tidbits as ways to lob insults at the PSP or Sony in general, but the fact that  a new PSP will be out in less than a year (most likely everywhere in the world at that point) is the main thing that matters here - Sony is moving on, that's all.

It's nice to see Mr. Klepek here doing the classy thing and only talking about the story and related elements rather than the douchey route everyone else is taking.Great to have you aboard :)

I like my Go. Truly pocket size form factor and no messing around with dumb UMDs. Sure there is no backcompat and you can't trade in your games but...I'm an adult. I buy and play games pretty much once. Twice if they are great. If I recommend a game to a friend I'll expect them to pay for their own copy.

Basically the haters are whiny broke-ass kids. Which consequently is the target demo of portable systems, so Sony did make a pretty big mistake. The only major problem (besides misaimed demographic) was the fact that Sony did not make digital release a prerequisite for PSP titles from the Go launch forward. Every game should have been downloadable day and date. Would that have been so hard?

I'm kind of with you. But it's not so much that it looks like the PSP per se, as it is what that fact is indicative of. The NGP at this stage looks like being "more PSP than the PSP!". Sony have learnt their lesson about how to make a good PSP...

But not, apparently, the lesson that maybe the PSP isn't the ideal form for a handheld console.

Plus...The damn thing is huge. Monstrously oversized. It's a leviathan. I really can't fathom why they'd think making it so damn big is a good idea, so I'm gonna assume it's that big by necessity - they have, after all, overloaded it with tech.

Never seen one, don't know anyone who has/had/wants one, have no want for one myself....ever.  Seemed doomed from the gate.  A lot of people say "Sony is  too ambitious, too far ahead of its time blah blah."  I think it was just plain stupidity. Did they even do any market research? Hard to believe they did.  That's my two cents.

@Jensonb:  Yeah it's such an investment to have a standalone handheld device for just gaming when you look at some of the games coming out for the smartphones which are more or less a bonus feature to your all in one device e.g. Samurai Girl. It's just an example but that sort of stuff will eventually catch up to the 3DS and PSP without the need to make a separate hardware investment and carry a second device.

Yeah, and I'm not sure Sony realises Nintendo has isolated themselves from that threat slightly more effectively cos the the 3D and stuff. NGP can't really be home to unique experiences like the 3DS can.

I'm with you, I was interested until they broke the UMD Transferral promise and announced the ridiculous price point. The fact they dropped the ball on ensuring all the games went ont PSN compounded the problem. If they'd supported it better and priced it more realistically, I might have got onboard, i actually really liked the hardware itself - I found it much nicer to hold than the regular PSP.

Think Xperia Play phone, that is the child of the PSP Go. Sony (or Sony Ericcson rather) believed to have developed the Xperia Play based on the PSP Go (externally they look rather similar).

And once again, consumers are Sony's guinea pigs. This thing launched to a resounding 'huh?' and not once did it ever justify it's own existence. Toss it in the closet with your minidisc player I suppose.

The PSPgo was basically amazing for pirates. 16 gigs of internal storage, plus a slot for a memory card? For an extra $40-50? The lack of UMD didn't hurt them at all, and they aren't limited by which games go up on PSN. For the actual consumer, though? Seems pretty much completely pointless.

The main reason is, Sony is an electronics company. Gaming is only a small segment of the company.
150,000,000 PS2s sold would seem to disagree with all four of these statements.
Anyway, Gamasutra and 1Up have SCEA on record saying PSPGo will continue in North America.

Maybe this will lead to the PSP becoming the hipster hand-held of choice, actually that would probably be reserved for something like the Sega Nomad!

I love my PSP, 3000 that is.
