PlayStation Portable (PSP) is Sony's first entry into the handheld gaming market. The PSP also sports multimedia features including music and video playback, a photo viewer, and an online store. Several model revisions have been released: the PSP-2000, 3000, PSPgo and the PSP-E1000.
Rumor: PSP 2 Announcement Coming This Month
- I wouldn't call the PSP development environment "thriving" at this point. -
Is that the same line Jeff says in this weeks BombCast?
If it supports PSP games, I'm probably sold. I've been looking to pick one up for a couple of years, and this might finally do it for me.
" I prefer my idea of sticking a lil' tv into a PS3 controller :)that PSP 2 plays xbox games? Sweet!!
"
" It's a terrible idea. First of all, it's going to be confusing, what with the PSP Phone looking realer and realer (it just got announced, right?). Then there's the Playstation App that just came out, minor, but can lead to further confusion. Not only that, but there's no event coming up, CES just finished up. When and how does Sony plan on announcing it, with all of these things stacked against it. Nah, dawg. They'll wait until E3. "you write everything proper then "Nah, dawg." i guess ive seen everything on the internet now
" The thought of sitting in an airport terminal and being able to play something like Team Fortress 2 or Call of Duty on a PSP is hugely appealing. "TF2 sucks on 360 and PS3 so if it ever came to PSP I'd imagine it will be even worse, plus it's a multiplayer focused game, I doubt you'll have much luck playing online in an airport terminal...
Twice the RAM of the XB360? For a handheld system, that is quite the feat. Shame that it will not support the UMD games, for I was looking to purchase the PSP2 if it did.
" Twice the RAM of the XB360? For a handheld system, that is quite the feat. Shame that it will not support the UMD games, for I was looking to purchase the PSP2 if it did. "that's like arguing that you shouldn't buy a ps3 just because its not backwards compatible with ps2, even though there is a ps2 in 1 in every 2 households in america. i mean, if you wanna play psp games, get a psp if you don't already have one?
How much you guys think they're gonna ask for this thing?
Could it be the dawn of 50-60 dollar handheld games?
It'll be interesting to see if the details are true, and they are going to go DL only again. All the leaked info seems to point to a DL only system similar to the GO. I just hope the y don't repeat the same mistakes by half assing the store front and not locking down day and date releases.
I honestly don't know why people are getting mad over this UMD thing. It was just like the situation with the PS3 Slim, people were bitching, and eventually learned to shut the fuck up because it wasn't that big of a deal. And chances are if you're complaining about not being able to not use your UMDs, you still probably have an old PSP lying around somewhere (pro tip: I use my PS2 for my old PS2 games, why not use your old PSP for your UMDs?!?! *gasp*).
Also, the exclusion of the UMD drive will probably make the PSP2 more ergonomic and cheaper for all of us...
Sony's moving on guys, I suggest we all do the same.
I proudly bought my final UMD today: a pre-buy for next month's Ys I & II Chronicles.
It seems that the UMD experiment is finally coming to a close. For shame, but there isn't a whole lot I've cared for on my PSP. Even the top games haven't often held my attention very long, and it's been a paperweight most of the time.
One thing I can say for my PSP: it's 6 year old launch day hardware that hasn't so much as lost a pixel. Pretty impressive.
" 1GB of RAM? If this is true it has to be running some big OS. What else would they need all that RAM for? I be pumped. "I would assume the games, if anything the UI should remain consistant wit hthe PS3, which it is I asume so 1GB of Ram for a handheld game is really exciting
Does the psp even sell well enough to warrent a new one? I mean outside of monster hunters in japan, does the handheld even have a massive following in order to have a new one? I'm glad sony has a handheld. Not because its an alternative, but to make nintendo come up with different ideas.
I dunno, even if they release this along with the Psphone thing, are people going to say nay on the 3ds for this?
Is it really that hard to have twice the RAM of the 360? (Other than maybe some heating/cooling issues, anyway).
It's not looking like much of a rumor by now, or at least part of it. Game Informer received an invitation to a Sony press event going on in Tokyo that same day, fitting with the story that VG247 and MCV gave.
So we know that Sony is going to have an event that day, where they will likely announce something. The only thing we can do now is wait to see if this event will be about the PSP2.
" This just in from my secret sources: PSP2 will ship with everything that every current console has, plus Sony has bought the rights to Mario and intends to release remakes of all the NES Marios plus Mario World with new levels. But don't tell anyone because my dad would totally get fired. "FUCK! We have the same dad.
An article about a rumor, of the possibility of an announcement declaring a product we've already known about for months. Slow news day... I did like the pretty drawing though.
Good, UMDs are TERRIBLE.
Like God Awful. Get rid of them and never bring back portable disc based media. Flash based carts if you gotta have physical media.
I'm also hoping that phone space has effected the ability to sell games at $40 price points on handhelds. You're going to have to be a lot more compelling to compete with the latest itoy or android phones for pocket space and their game libraries can be purchased at a much cheaper cost.
I still need DJ Max Portable 3, but after that, I'm done with PSP games.
Twice the RAM of the 360? Doesn't really matter if the gpu is crap.
I bought a PSP and loved it, I was always really disappointed that it never had more games. Hopefully third party developers will be more interested if it has 2 analogue sticks.
"Your guess is as good as mine on this one,"
Yeah, well, it shouldn't be. I'm not getting paid to write about it.
" @cjmabry said:Ya, it's hard to see them deviate from the XMB, but you have to wonder. If the PS3 and 360 don't even get near 1GB, maybe they'll run something like Android, considering OS's are what take up the majority of the RAM. Highly unlikely though, but nevertheless I'm really excited to hear and see more of this. Hopefully this 1GB RAM isn't totally bogus, but I really don't see it happening. Can't wait, though." 1GB of RAM? If this is true it has to be running some big OS. What else would they need all that RAM for? I be pumped. "I would assume the games, if anything the UI should remain consistant wit hthe PS3, which it is I asume so 1GB of Ram for a handheld game is really exciting "
" I still don't see having crazy graphics as a way to boost sales. "That's what I always say when thinking logically. But then you see those graphics the day the system launches and the blood lust begins!
@Afroman269 said:Oh I'll be tempted too but I'm guessing that it will attract the graphics lovers crowd and create the small install base. Its going to end up like the first PSP though, if their plan is to continue to make console like games." I still don't see having crazy graphics as a way to boost sales. "That's what I always say when thinking logically. But then you see those graphics the day the system launches and the blood lust begins!
