Why Don't I Care About my PS3 Trophies?

Posted by Job1021 (4 posts) -

So both my wife and I game...A lot!   We have almost every game system you can buy. I have been watching my wife play Heavy Rain on the PS3 when an achievement trophy popped up. I asked her what the achievement was and she absolutly could not care less. Now, let me give you some back story on my wifes gamming habit. She and I share a gold account on our 360. This is the same woman that S ranked LOST Via Domus for gammer points, and now, she couldn't care less?!

As we started talking about achievements and why they are good/bad for gamming we came to the conclusion that if you have friends who game and are on the same system then your commitment level is higher. It's like this post that I am wrighting on Giant Bomb, it's all about the XP. But, for some reason the Wii and PS3 don't have that relevance in our gamming lives. We have friends that own them, although few who actually play them. So the next time a trophy, Achievement or a whatever-the-hell the Wii has pops up think about the S rank that comes with it not the gamerscore.

Man, I hope the xp was worth it.

I feel like there must be a deep psychoanalysis that can be done regarding achievements... you know, by someone smarter than me.  It always catches me off guard when I realize that I'm attempting a certain task solely for the purpose of earning an achievement.  It just goes to show that they aren't entirely worthless, they are at least subjectively worth something to each individual who tries to get them.  That being said, if I were to get a PS3 I think I would care  a lot less about trophies, and I bet it is mostly because of what you said- most of my friends don't play PS3.

I think it's because Giant Bomb doesn't show your PS3 trophies yet :P

I know it's probably not their fault, though.

Fact is your not slapped in the face with your friends' trophies every time you turn the system on.

I'm not saying whether you consider it a good thing or a bad thing, I'm just saying nobody I know knows who has what as far as trophies go, meanwhile we all know each other's approximate gamerscore and even if we're not "competing", we all know what the deal is.

(...I'm in the lead by about 25 grand btw)

Amen brother! I loved achievements on 360 but then my 360 broke so I moved onto my ps3 as my main console. And honestly I don't give a shit about trophies. WHY? I have no clue. Maybe cause there is no number that is easy to see. or maybe because when I unlock a trophy I can go to it right away (like on the xbox when u press the guide button). I don't know why but I too don't care about trophies.

Yeah I have the same situation, I go nuts for the achievements sometimes (Which I like, because it's an easy way to add a little extra value to a game, and give me a reason to boot it up after I've beaten it), but yeah for trophies, I barely notice or track them. Other than myself, the only person I've ever met who owns a PS3 was a drug dealer, whereas all my friends own xboxes, so I get mad competitive about those.

<- This.
Although that didn't stop me from getting Platinum in Yakuza 3.
