Introduced with the 2.40 firmware update, Trophies are the achievement system for the Playstation 3.
Trophies are the Playstation 3 counterpart of Xbox 360's achievements that was incorporated in the Playstation 3 platform since the 2.40 update. Trophies are a form of reward that players can obtain for in-game accomplishments, such as beating a certain level, collecting a number of items, etc. All trophies are incorporated into the games by the developers, and as such the difficulty of obtaining trophies can vary from game to game.
Levels
SCE introduced a level system that gives the user an incentive to get more trophies. A Bronze trophy contributes less towards your level then a Silver, and that contributes less than gold, and finally, Gold contributes less than a Platiunum. The amount of trophies needed to go to the next level gradually increases as you progress. For example it might take you twice as many trophies to reach level 3 than it did for you to reach level 2.
Trophy Tiers
Bronze
Bronze trophies are rewarded for completing uncomplicated and or easy tasks within the game, like 'complete level 4'.
Silver
Silver trophies are rewarded for completing complicated and or difficult tasks, like 'kill ten enemies in 1 minute'.
Gold
Gold trophies are rewarded for completing much more complicated and or difficult tasks, like staying alive for a certain amount of time, completing a level without using weapons etc.
Platinum
Platinum trophies are only rewarded when you have unlocked all Gold, Silver, and Bronze trophies in a game.
Super Stardust HD was the first game to have trophies included after release, and Pixeljunk: Eden is the first game to come with trophies at release.
Future Trophy Implementation
Sony has revealed that starting in 2009, all games released on the ps3 will have mandatory trophies. Also it is rumored that trophies might find themselves integrated into Home, as either a visual trophy case and or a form of currency.
Estimated value for each Playstation Trophy
It is estimated from users observing their level progress that each trophy has a set number of points that they are worth. They are as follows:
Bronze=15 points
Silver=30 points
Gold-90 points
Platinum=180 points (Also estimated to be possibly 200 points)
It is estimated that a single full Blu-Ray game is worth around 1230-1250 points depending on the true value of the Platinum trophy.
The amount of points it takes to reach a level has also been estimated:
Level 1= 0
Level 2= 200
Level 3= 600
Level 4= 1200
Level 5= 2400
Level 6= 4000
Level 7- 6000
Level 8- 8000
Level 9= 10000
Level 10- 12000
ECT.
It seems after level 6 it just keeps adding 2000 more points.
NOTE: All of this information are based off of observations of Playstation 3 users and none of this is 100% confirmed.
