@Management: PSP failed because it was a shit console, not because of piracy.

    PS: I own a PSP.

Since when is selling over 71 million units is considered a failure? By your logic the PS3, 360 and even the Gameboy SP must be massive failures.

Funny thing is, what made owning a PSP viable was homebrew, most of its games were shit. People trying to say the PSP failed are only trying to strawman that piracy is the devil.

2011 really has been a momentous year for both hacking and dubstep.

@BionicRadd: I don't know man I think the DS sells well because people who do not know how to pirate the games are buying them. I doubt the same people who are pirating from the PSP are like DHur these games are better on the DS I'm buying that one dhur. It's just a different audience in itself.

Contrary to what a lot of people think, the DS and PSP had a lot of the same customers. One need but look at sales of games people actually talk about wanting to play to see that good games do in fact sell. Most of the best games people talk about on PSP (that weren't absurdly ported to PS2, thus nuking their own sales potential) are niche games like Patapon. In fact, when you look at the PSP's real highlights in terms of original content that can't be had in other forms on the big consoles with better controls, you see a large amount of very Japanese games. That is punctuated by the fact that the PSP did extremely well in Japan and, as far as games sales go, did kinda poorly in the US. Basically, I never felt like Sony knew what they wanted to do with the PSP. As a consumer, I never felt compelled to buy one. My wife has one and I never feel compelled to get a game for it to play. Contrast that to the fact that I bought a DS LIte, sold it and then bought another one, earlier this year. Not that I represent the whole of the gaming world, but the fact is I rarely hear people talking about playing their PSPs and never really did. Even my friend who has a launch PSP that he hacked never used it to steal PSP games. He loaded an NES emulator on it and used it as a 300 dollar portable NES machine.

In short, I never got the impression that people even cared enough about most of the PSP's library of games to steal them, much less buy them.

It's about the games you sell too not just the consoles sold.

I think it's kind of just deserts for Sony, what with the PSP game reclamation system.

I really, really hope the Vita does better than the PSP, and gives Nintendo a run for its money. Homebrew on the PSP was awesome, custom firmware added more features than just the ability to run ISOs, but the rampant piracy combined with poor games in many respects really hurt it.

To all the haters, the psp was a fun time-

But on topic, as long as the Vita games are not piratable and the Vita games are of quality, this may end up helping the system in the long run.

    A few thoughts.

    1. Heard a bit about this. As far as I know, it's not really verified yet through any trustworthy channels, but it could very well be real. One thing you need to consider is that this is NOT a vita crack. This is a PSP emulation crack. Which is why it seems like it could be legit. The hackers have the PSP private keys. In order to run PSP games the Vita needs to use those same keys. There's no reason (assuming Sony lazied out (read #2)) that a program couldn't be modified very quickly execute the same way on the Vita's PSP mode as it does on an actual PSP.

    2. If this is true, than Sony put no effort into their PSP library. Since there's no UMD and everything's being downloaded there's no reason why Sony would have to use the original PSP keys (well, other than they just couldn't be bothered to put new keys into the downloaded game code and Vita's PSP mode). Considering Sony's paranoia over piracy that would be a shocking oversight. (Though considering Sony's "security" in 2011 to this point, perhaps another "par for the course" might be more fitting after all). That could be one of the arguments that this might be fake.

    3. Piracy didn't kill the PSP. The fact that 95% of the games released for it would have been better if they had been fleshed out and released on PS2 did. If you look at the DS's library, there are tons of games that could ONLY work the way they do on the DS. You put them on another platform and they either still work ok, but loose something in the translation, or they don't work at all. Most of the time I played PSP games, I spent thinking how much better the game would have been if it had been released on a real console and not gimped for a handheld.

    4. Back to the Vita thing. If this is true, then I'm glad actually. It means that people will be able to dump their already legitimately bought and paid for PSP ISO's and put them on a card to play on their Vita. For no extra charge. You know, the way it should have been all along. Seriously, (for a couple publisher's anyway) I'd have to pay half again what I paid for the game originally to port it over? I'm sorry, but if this is legit, I'm not feeling too bad about the prospect of using this to play the games I paid for instead of paying some publisher $15 for the exact same version of a game I already own. Maybe if the game was updated and re-released for Vita... But the exact same version? Not feeling bad at all.

Companies lose money on hardware, unless they can make it past the 3-5 year mark while maintaining substantial sales numbers. Sony began making money on the PS3 three and a half years after public release. The only reason console manufacturers stay in the game (no pun intended) is because game sales offset the discrepancy. With the rampant piracy on the PSP, Sony hadn't the chance to even attempt a 3-5 year profitability goal. If this continues with the Vita I won't be surprised if Sony nods out of the future portable console market poker game.

@Three0neFive: It's not the fact that some basement-dweller hacked it; it's that they obviously are going to release it to the public, thus making the platform a financial failure.
