I am going to grab a PS Vita and a copy of Final Fantasy X HD. This is the first time I will own a Sony game console. Does anyone have some recommendations for me to purchase? I enjoy platformers, JRPGs/RPGs, and the occasional shooter and/or racer.

    Thank you!

Persona 4 Golden is the obvious answer.

Persona 4 Golden and Spelunky quickly come to mind. Sound Shapes is pretty good too with headphones, and Fez looks amazing on the OLED screen if you haven't played it yet. I haven't picked up LBP Vita yet even though I'm a big fan of the series but it recently got a price drop.

I would also highly recommand Lumines: Electronic Symphony, Olli Olli and Tearaway.

I'd highly recommend PS Plus. $50 per year gets you "free" games and discounts each month:

    Current Free Games:

    • Uncharted: Golden Abyss (Your action/adventure shooter)
    • Gravity Rush (Action/Adventure) (Not quite a platformer)
    • Wipeout 2048 (Your occassional racer)
    • Monster Hunter Freedom Unite (PSP Game.) (Action/Adventure RPG)
    • Unit 13 (shooter)
    • Street Fighter X Tekken

I put "Free" in quotation marks only because it's a subscription service. You have access to the games as long as you maintain a subscription. You also get 1 GB of online storage of game saves if you ever have to transfer memory cards and discounts on sales.

Since this is your first Sony console, there are a ton of amazing PSOne games you have access to. If you don't use graphics as a hangup, they can be a blast to play all these years later. There's to many to list, but there are a ton of great RPGs from that era. Chrono Cross, Final Fantasy VII, VIII, IX, Tactics, and more.

@the_edj: You can also get Lone Survivor: The Director's Cut (Survival horror) and Thomas Was Alone (2D platformer) right, both cross-buy games.

Ys: Memories of Celceta is a pretty awesome action JRPG. The story is nothing new, but the music and game play are top notch. After finishing the game in about 25 hours, I immediately started new game + in Nightmare mode, and I rarely go back to a game right after finishing it, let alone an RPG.

    Virtues Last Reward is excellent.

Pixeljunk monsters is an amusing diversion.

Metal Gear HD collection is good if you're a fan, although the rear touch controls aren't great.

Alight my order is placed and should arrive Friday evening. Good GOD the memory cards are pricey, but I still grabbed the 16GB. Looks like I can finally play Chrono Cross with this thing, and Hotline Miami, FF Tactics and other early games, Galak-Z (this summer), early Metal Gear games.

If this is your first Sony system and you like JRPGs then holy shit are you in for a gold mine of back catalog games, given the PS1 and PSP support.

    PS1 Classics

    • Chrono Cross & Trigger
    • Pretty much every FF from 1 to 9
    • Grandia
    • Persona 2 EP
    • Vagrant Story
    • Xenogears

    PSP Classics

    • The other FF games from 1-9 not covered by PSOne
    • Persona 1, Persona 3 Portable
    • The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky*
    • Ys 1, 2, 3 and 7

On Vita, continuing down the JRPG hole you've got Persona 4 and Ys MoC, which is Ys 4.

On the platformer front there is Rayman Origins/Legends, Limbo, Spelunky, Thomas Was Alone, Tearaway and LBP. Personally I didn't like Tearaway but I did smile the entire time I played it.

*This is what many consider to be the best game the PSP had.

For the Vita: Disgaea 3, Ys, Persona 4 Golden, Wipeout 2048. There are also plenty of indie games on there, notably Spelunky and Terraria. Borderlands 2 is also coming out pretty soon. Minecraft is supposed to be on it at some point.

On the PSP side, there's Daxter and the two God of War games. I'm not really an expert on great PSP games, though. I played Final Fantasy IV on there - if you're wanting an old-school JRPG then you can't do much better than the PSP version of FFIV.

For the PS1, the Crash Bandicoot games are on there. I haven't played a ton of PS1 JRPG's, but I want to play Chrono Cross at some point.

Persona 4 Golden, obviously. The opening cinematic alone is incredible on the OLED screen. Dragon's Crown is pretty good on it, as well as Spelunky. Tearaway is also pretty neat, as it uses a lot of the Vita's hardware. Those have been the 4 I've bought so far, and then just a ton of games I've picked up through PS Plus.

@bigjeffrey: I checked the store and P2 IS isn't available for Vita. With Valkyria Chronicles 2 and CCFF7 also missing it's got some big gaps in the PSP catalog.

Playstation Plus is a must, the games currently available on Plus for Vita are pretty good. Unit 13 was a pretty big surprise for me, that game is incredibly well done 3rd person shooter on the go.

    Vita Games Proper

    • Luftrausers
    • Tearaway
    • Super Stardust Delta
    • Lumines
    • Modnation Racers: Road Trip

    PSP games

    • Persona 3 Portable: Not as good as FES due to lack of characters animation, but it does have that Persona name and has best Waifu aka Mitsuru aka NOT CHIE (that felt good)
    • Patapon 1 and 2 (not so much 3): Addictive rhythm game that will eat up hours of your time, definitely one of the best games out there

    PS1 Classics

    • Spyro 1,2,3: These games still hold up,
    • Legend of the Dragoon: Best JRPG combat

Seriously, Muramasa. My first Vita game and still my favorite. It's a 2D brawler with loot and fun.

Dragon's Crown is from the same developer and has plenty of RPG elements to keep you hooked.

Persona 4 Golden, Hot Shots Golf: World Invitational, Spelunky, Wipeout 2048. Those are a few games that I enjoy on my Vita. There is also the Jak and Daxter Collection, but it suffers from framerate and some control issues.

Vita is awesome...you'll probably wish you got the 32 or 64 gig card eventually ^_^ These are the games I've enjoyed:

    • Tactics Ogre
    • Spelunky
    • Rainbow Moon
    • Final Fantasy Tactics
    • Gravity Rush
    • Super Stardust Delta
    • Killzone: Mercenary (MP is probably dead at this point though)
    • Lumines
    • Persona 4 Golden
    • Thomas Was Alone
    • Chrono Trigger
    • Plants VS Zombies
    • Tales From Space: When Mutant Blobs Attack
    • Tearaway
    • Virtue's Last Reward (very weird)
    • Rayman Origins
    • Jetpack Joyride
    • Zen Pinball 2
    • Pinball Arcade
    • Smart As...
    • Sine Mora
    • Sound Shapes (just the Beck levels TBH)
    • Frobisher Says!

I think most of these were free through PS+

The psp personas used to be on there, from what I can remember. Now there's only P3 for psp and the psone classics for P1 and P2: eternal punishment. There was a freaking sale on all of them pretty recently. Maybe they got taken down?

Edit: nvm. P1 is the psp game. The only psone classic is eternal punishment. Could have sworn it had both versions of P2, but I could be wrong.

I bought it for Persona 4 Golden, and that game is probably my favorite of the past ten years or so. So for me that completely justified the purchase. The Vita also ended up being my preferred system to play Spelunky on. Like others have said, just get a PS Plus account. Brilliant service, can't go wrong with it.
