What We Know (And What I've Heard) About the Very Real PlayStation Vita

Supposedly the final look of the NGP.
Supposedly the final look of the NGP.

I probably spent too much of lazy BBQ with friends yesterday afternoon poking around on my phone about PlayStation Vita, allegedly the final name for the ugly-sounding Next-Generation Portable (NGP), but it all sounded like a bunch of nonsense.

Vita? Really? But I can tell you there's reason to suspect it's the final name.

The rumors started when Games Pundit cited an anonymous source telling them Sony would announce NGP's final name at E3 next week: Vita. Most shrugged their shoulders, but some legitimate-looking presentation images leaked on another blog, Mega Rock. That blog's since taken itself down. Too late, though.

There's more circumstantial evidence. Try pointing your browser towards vita.scedev.net, which leads you to Sony's developer portal--ngp.scedev.net works, too. psp2.scedev.net leads to a browser error, however, which means the subdomains were made legitimate by Sony.

Someone also registered playstationvita.com and psvita.com on April 19, long before rumors.

I've talked to several developer sources, all of whom asked to remain anonymous, as E3 is so close. But each confirmed Vita was definitely the codename for the project when Sony was first showing the hardware to developers. One developer said his company has stopped referring to the machine as Vita, preferring NGP or PSP2, but was unclear if Vita had been dropped.

When Sony revealed its next portable in January, it was not supposed to have "NGP" attached, I'm told. Sony was unable to find internal consensus on a final name, so the event grudgingly went ahead with something temporary. At the time, however, it was being referred to internally as Vita.

None of my sources were able to say with complete certainty whether Vita has stuck and that's the name that'll appear at Sony's press conference next week. But don't be surprised if it does.

Better than "Next Gen Portable", a name that would mean literally nothing after its successor is unveiled.

What's in a name these days, anyway? I mean, if the hardware is great - no one will care what it's called. People thought the iPad was a terrible name when it was first announced too.

Vita smacks of someone hiring in a team who gets paid thousands upon thousands of dollars to come up with a name, and so feel they have to choose something stupid to justify the money.

It is a weird name for a portable device and a playstation device at that. I agree it shouldn't be PSP2 or NGP, but Vita is... I dont know but it doesn't fit a portable device.

Two weeks after E3 nobody will care about the name.  It's always funny to see the initial reactions to things like this. Eventually it's not a big deal.

The word vita is mostly used for medical products here in Germany, or maybe Vita-Cola, which has vitamin c in it. So pretty weird to me, but I guess latin is not a bad way to go about it.

That is the worst name for a Sony system I have ever herd and stands proudly with WII in post 1980's and 1990 list of suck ass names, these people better be wrong and if they are not there is still time to cover it up. it has two names now playstation and your crap new name attached to it, you should have just called it playatation and stuffed another number or function of it after it like you was before.

Once again sony you rip off nintendo and there newly found as of 2006cs ablity of giving crap names to things.

Keep going sony and you might catch up with some of the worst named video game products of the 1980's

and nice job making the system look bent like it was stepped on in that picture, I hope it looks as busted when  I buy it.

OH ya and your first plyatation pocket name sounded much better than playatation portable you should have fucking kept that for the PSP/.

At least the Sony Experia Play shortens to SEXPlay and has a catchy, if terrible, name. The Vita would be like the Wii all over again.
