So today I was doing what I do from time to time, strolling around reddit, when I stumbled upon this very interesting thread. According to that guy gearbox is actually up for putting borderlands 2 on the vita but surprise surprise they need some help from the guys with the money. So if you happen to have some spare time on your hands and care for getting borderlands 2 on the vita be a gentleman and let the big guys know by sending them an email (how to can be found in the reddit thread) it might not work but heck if we don't try we will never know.

I don't understand handheld gaming so no, I don't want Borderlands 2 on a Vita.

#3 Posted by StrainedEyes (864 posts) - 1 year, 2 months ago

I would prefer an iOS randomized chest opening game where I could send my found loot to my 360 copy.

Only if theres split screen

#5 Posted by FancySoapsMan (5410 posts) - 1 year, 2 months ago

I would rather play it on a Vita than a console.

if it was a good port anyway.

Also,I love Borderlands, so I want it everywhere I go. So yes, I would like Borderlands 2 on my Vita with Transfarring.

Yeah...

Like a claptrap app where you customize your own annoying little robot and send him out on missions or do mini-games to get chests for your characters on the consoles....

Oh wow thanks for the heads up fixed it.

No thanks. I understand why some people would want it, but I'm not much for handhelds anymore.

Only if I could transfar my data somehow between my Vita and PC.

#11 Posted by believer258 (7825 posts) - 1 year, 2 months ago

I can understand why one would want Borderlands on their Vita. Actually, that seems like quite a nice fit. You could go do a few little quests while waiting at the doctor's office or something of that sort.

However, you can't get split screen on the Vita. For that matter, spending an entire day holding and staring at a handheld does not sound comfortable, and co-op gaming sessions can get rather long.

If I were thirteen years old right now, I would definitely get it on Vita so I could have something to do when my parents were forcing me to go visit my grandparent's for an entire day. But now? I'll play it on 360, in my spare time.

No, this is the exact kinda game I hate seeing on handhelds. It's such a lazy approach. I really hate the idea of dumbing down console games for handhelds, I'd rather see unique experiences tailored for the platform.

Yes. But it's all relative, and relative to console titles, handheld titles are generally dumbed down from there.

Well I find the PC-to-console argument about dumbing down is rather silly. Especially because it's usually about how the PC version would have been some kind of hardcore return to form if it weren't for the console version selling more, and the devs focusing on that version.

It's a different format with handhelds, really. Something that works well on a big screen, with lots of enemies on-screen at once with tight, specific control schemes, just doesn't port well to handhelds.

Also I find straight porting to be uninteresting. I have a home console, I can play those games anytime I want on my TV. Why would I chose to go to a handheld to play more of the same? I want something different, and unique for the platform, something more suited to shorter play sessions and portability. It takes different design philosophies to make a good handheld game than it does to make a good console game.

Seems like a strange thing to put on the Vita.

#25 Posted by captain_clayman (3164 posts) - 1 year, 2 months ago

do want. i'd get a vita for that.

you know what'd be even cooler? if you could exchange your character/save from multiple platforms, like you could upload it to a website and then download it back on to the console of choice.

Fine. I don't personally want to spend an entire day staring at a handheld. I would rather spend a day devoted to gaming on a television. Which, granted, the Vita is supposed to be able to do but why wouldn't I pick it up on 360 if I was going to do that?

Also, I did play a Monster Hunter game on the PSP. No interest in playing one any further.

If a competent port of Borderlands 2 was coming to Vita, I'd probably buy the console. I've been waiting for a good reason!

On one hand, I can see enjoying playing this on the types of trips I usually do a lot of handheld gaming on. On the other hand, I'm probably getting this day one on PC so I doubt I'd get it anyway.

I'd prefer more unique handheld games then console ports. If Vita just becomes a console port machine then I'm not that interested in owning one.

Well then I have to point to my response above. Going from a computer monitor and a keyboard to a TV and a controller isn't as big of a leap as going from the big TV and controller to a tiny screen with comparatively limited or strange controls. I don't think people complaining about dumbing down PC games has any merit. But going from a home platform to a handheld is a completely different beast. Some stuff just doesn't work on the go, the PSP is a testament to shitty attempts at handheld down-ports.

@MikkaQ: And what's the problem if the console-to-handheld ports aren't dumbed down, but are the exact same game as the console versions just like BlazBlue Continuum Shift Extend for the Vita is?
#35 Posted by Chavtheworld (4121 posts) - 1 year, 2 months ago

@MikkaQ: I totally see your point, it's just really funny to go from PC gamers always complaining about consoles being dumbed down, to see a complaint that handheld versions of games would be the equivalent for console games.

As someone who doesn't understand the hate for having a ps3 where ever you go, not saying a vita is a ps3 though, I absolutely want this. As long as they dont remove features I would pay 60$ for it easy

Yeah I can see the humor in that. But I play PC, console and handheld so I only complain about ports because it's not something new to play. I'll play a game on pretty much the first thing it comes out on.

@FluxWaveZ said:

Then you have the problem of playing a game meant for a larger screen on a smaller screen. Might work for fighting games, but for other types of games it could be awful. Also I can imagine it being pretty bad for fighting games if you get precise and count frames.

There's still the issue of controls, the Vita lacks lower shoulder buttons and R3+L3 stick click-ins, which reduce your options. Yeah you can move that kind of thing to the touch screen, but it's simply not the same. Also there's obviously no fight stick for the Vita, so I don't know why you'd ever want to play a fighting game on that.

The final issue with games meant for home play being ported to handhelds are of course the game designs themselves. Coming off playing a bunch of MGS Snake Eater 3DS, it's not well designed for quick missions like Peace Walker was. With the long cutscenes, codec conversations and slow mission pace, the game is clearly meant for marathon play at home. PW was structured around the fact that you don't get a lot of time to play at once with handhelds. You could pop off a couple missions on the bus or whatever. Not really the case with Snake Eater, there's rarely any satisfying places to stop.

Looking at Borderlands, a co-op heavy game that encourages people to sit and quest for hours looking for loot and leveling up with friends, that sounds TERRIBLE as a handheld experience.

Exactly this. The only reason I play a bunch of DS and PSP games is because those games aren't on console systems. Hell, if my DS games worked on my Wii, and PSP games could be played on a PS3 I wouldn't have bothered buying them. Nothing about the portability of a game impresses me since I don't ride a train or bus to work or fly frequently.

#41 Edited by FluxWaveZ (17845 posts) - 1 year, 2 months ago
@MikkaQ: All of the problems you've listed sound relatively minor for me. I want straight ports because that's what I'm looking for in handheld games, and I know that's what others want to. I don't need different kinds of experiences that are designed for the handheld format; what I want is to play console games when I don't have access to consoles, which is often.

Specifically in the case of Borderlands, though, there are several people who have played through the original game solo. A Vita version could be fine for those people.

I think that the amount of stuff on the in game inventory menus being quite tiny for this idea so nope.

That's kind of what Sony is going to push hard this year for vita, it has two analog sticks for good reason.

Ahh well I'm opposite with that. I can come home to my consoles every night, when I'm playing a handheld I want something different. Maybe if progress in a handheld game actually transferred over to the home version, but they rarely ever do. I don't see the appeal of playing a game twice in the first place. That's why I ditched Persona 3 Portable, and started playing FES instead. I figured if I'm only playing it once, I want the full experience.

#47 Edited by BestUsernameEver (4641 posts) - 1 year, 2 months ago

@Video_Game_King: They're trying to take all the console ports of the PSP and elevating it to something more than a portable feeling FPS or third person shooter. I think the vita's approach is very much taking existing games that are on the ps3, or taking their IPs and making it portable (Bioshock vita, Uncharted GA, Resistance vita). I don't really like that approach too much, seeming I like lighter, faster portable games, but Sony's philosophy with the vita is a perfect fit when considering Borderlands 2.

My TV isn't all that great, so I actually like playing the handhelds at home. That said, I tend to agree that certain experiences work better on a bigger screen.
