Well this should be a short listen.

Edit: Actually, it's still an hour and forty without Last of Us talk, lol.

My favourite podcast about games, Japan and Japanese games. Looking forward to some TLOU discussion.

Fantastic Last of Us discussion. Really enjoyed it. And I also agree for game of the year it will be Last of Us vs. GTA 5. If GTA 5 trailers are truly indicative of the type of tone that game is going for then regardless of quality of narrative I don't think GTA 5 stands a chance against Last of Us. In a battle between a silly story vs. serious story the latter will win, always.

lemme just say i agree that last of us is a strong contender.

but your absolute your saying of how the serious story will always win is ridiculous and not the rule. Xcom beating walking dead for goty on GB invalidates the absolute that serious games will always win.

Ah I've been waiting for this.

Nice Blazing Saddles reference!

Love the idea of Hiroko just wandering around Tokyo just checking out butts and then speaking so matter-of-factly about it later.

Man :/ Hearing Ryan stuff still fucking hits me like a ton of bricks. Thanks for doing it, 8-4 lady and gents.

God, some of the comments about TLoU made me cringe. "Some scenes are ripped from Uncharted" lolno.

74 minutes of spoilers for Last of Us means I'll have to skip this episode. Ah well. After I get back from my vacation to Japan I can finally afford to pick up the game and play it finally. But thats still like a month off, so ahh well.

Posted by PurpleSpandex

@mrfluke: Thank you, they should have just separated it or done it at the end.

Edited by mrfluke

@christaran: you dont necessarily need to skip the entire episode,

I disagree greatly with these guys about the Uncharted games.

That's about the only on topic thing I can say in the comments here.

Edit: I lied: Last of Us Spoiler:

At the end, instead of stabbing that doctor, I just pulled out my gun and shot all three of the doctors. In the head. I didn't even realize that you could counter kill that dude with the scalpel. It...just seemed like the thing that Joel would do to me.

Man, these guys have some nitpicks!

I came in this thread just to say that I loved the name of this week's episode

Loved this episode.

I'm really glad this podcast ended up finding a "home" of sorts on the GB feed, otherwise I probably wouldn't have found it. I've been consistently enjoying it for a while now, so thanks to whoever helped to make that happen (looking at you, @patrickklepek?)

Posted by MrMojoSinking

@kerned: Ironically I have 8-4 to thank for introducing me to GB. I followed them here and found my favorite gaming site!

Posted by hostyl1

I know video games sites skew young, so wanted to see if anyone caught the reference to perhaps my favorite movie of all time Blazing Saddles. Once again, the duders do not disappoint. Love this site!

Thanks a lot for those time stamps. Desperately need to avoid Last of Us spoilers myself.

Hey everyone it's Tuuuueeeeesdaaaaay!

Awesome episode, I enjoyed the really long Last of Us spoiler discussion. Also the tribute to Ryan was perfect

had to skip a bit of the podcast as i didn't finish last of us (im sure you guys had your reasons for mashing in the last of us stuff with the podcast) seriously appreciated the timecodes guys.

but the hour and more of podcast was still rock solid, even JJ wasnt as nitpicky on this weeks podcast like last time.

I don't know what to think of Pikmin anymore. Pikmin 1 having a 30-day time limit was the whole reason it was compelling, the whole reason there is a risk-reward of "c'mon guys, hussle, I need you to bring these ship parts back before the end of the day, or I'll have to waste another day coming back to this area", and it made you actually concerned about whether you had time to harvest more Pikmin vs. focusing on getting ship parts.

Pikmin 2 could be as many days long as you wanted, so they tried to derive challenge for the player by having dungeons where you have to do the whole thing with whatever amount of Pikmin you start with. One or two of the dungeons had pretty bullshit bosses, but aside from that, it still just felt like I couldn't possibly lose, since you always have all the time in the world to re-harvest more Pikmin and try a dungeon again.

So hearing that Pikmin 3 is probably more handholdy than ever is a bummer, because it has rarely been a hard game. And they kind of split the difference on the time limit by having juice, but it sounds like juice is in such abundant supply that you're really never freaking out over running out. Rock Pikmin are basically purple Pikmin again, in that purple Pikmin were also used as like battering rams to stun enemies, except I guess they've changed the weird thing where purple Pikmin were very strong.

It really doesn't sound like they added enough to the Pikmin formula.

Great podcast guys. Been listening to you for a while, since you were hosted by GB. So glad Patrick helped move you here.

Hmm, I still don't get all the love for the Last of Us, I guess there is something wrong with me but I was completely apathetic to most of the things these guys say are great.

I think the game was ok but I did not liked the gameplay. Also the pacing to me it felt like the needed a 12 hours game but they had a 6 hours story so they put a lot of filler in it. The story is great, but having already seen The Road and Children of Men there was nothing really all that impressive about it to me.

Posted by TournamentOfHate

Thanks a lot for that Ryan tribute.

Also nice to hear more love for EVO.

The Last of Us spoiler

The Whole part about hanging upside down in a game is not a thing TLOU came up with first, The new Tomb Raider game had a segment like that also where you had to fight, and they even put it into the Multiplayer if I am not mistaken.

And the part with Nathan Drake hanging on the sign, brilliant idea btw. I would not call it the same, because there you had to jump around on the sign to shoot and get into cover at the same time.

The hanging upside down part is all about picking the right target to shoot first, and make the shots count.

Other than that great to hear some talk about the last of us.

Oh "Ice Ice Baby." Good choice sirs. Sums up Ryan to the T, lol.
