We close out our Game of the Year 2012 deliberations with our picks for Dumbest Motion-Controlled Moment, Best Trend, Biggest News, Worst Game, and finally, our pick for overall Game of the Year.
I knew this year's deliberations would be shorter. It's not been the best year in gaming. I think it speaks a lot of the length of this generation of consoles.
YES! Take that, The Walking Dead. WWE 13 wins by collusion. Oh wait, no, it was XCOM. A great top ten and I'm glad Ryan reads them all out because Sleepy Dawgs gets to be the last game mentioned on the podcast.
Glad that Walking Dead isn't game of the year. A game needs more than just a decent overall story to get a game of the year win and The Walking Dead's game play is just fine, but nothing great.
Also, the fact Brad is so disappointed about Asura's Wrath really disappoints me as a gamer. There needs to be a rule for kicking out games that have less than 10% of the experience as actual play time...interesting art style or not. These aren't lists about interactive anime.
While I haven't listened to the podcast yet, I know XCOM won, and while I wouldn't know if that was the right choice or not from my personal opinion (which doesn't happen to matter here, and is irrelevant to what I'm trying to say), I was just thinking that sites should go as far down as they need to, but maybe not every year an individual game would win. I mean, sure, you'll argue that one needs to be higher than another, but if you can eliminate one, then it should happen, but if it came down to a final two and it was extremely hard to choose, you shouldn't have to. I remember GameSpot in the past had done this.
@Rewcastle: I'll assume you're upset because it got spoilt. For one, read the other comments. For another one, why would you read the comments before listening? Bizarre
I don't think Epic is just going to be an Engine company any time soon... You can't say the people going for more creative games like Fortnite are just going to the engine side of things. They make big games, they make really solid games, and that engine won't be nearly as kick ass for devs if they stop making games. The thing that's awesome about Unreal Engine is that it's so friendly to use, and that's because they used the tools and worked to make them awesome to use.
Two guys leave Epic, and you assume they are getting out of making games? Even in the long run, that's a bit silly... This isn't the east, this happens. Even the major guys will leave eventually. Studios don't stay the same constantly. They lose and gain people.
I think the fact that this is only two hours says a lot about how this has kind of been a lame year for video games.
Not so much "bad" but kinda weaksauce compared to the strong games of 2011 ( Skyrim, Dark Souls, The Witcher 2) 2010 (Mass Effect 2 , Red Dead) and hell even 2009 (Batman, Uncharted 2, Assassin's Creed 2) but I think X COM and Journey were really great standouts regardless.
Really guys? Xcom? You know there were these games called Advance Wars on GBA and DS, they did turn based strategy better than Xcom both original and current. Walking Dead felt like a once in a generation experience, when this gen ends we will remember Super Mario Galaxy, Uncharted 2 and Walking Dead.
Oh well, good show and i wish Vinny would press his case more he just accepts being pushed around =P, tough it was great having Alex there, i hope you have him next year too.
It's a shame to me that Resident Evil 6 is on the worst. That's probably the first time I've ever disagreed with some great gaming sites from a large scale, but it's OK I guess.
Thundercats sounds like it gets the "What are you DOING" award.
Geez, for Walking Dead being at number 2, they made the Xbox version sound quite awful. Great list, though. I'm on board with the placement and choices of these games, all in all.

How about Final Fantasy Tactics, Disgaea, and Devil Survivor? I feel like I was lied to when people were talking about how XCOM was one the greatest strategy rpg. The game was best in the beginning and got progressively worst as the story dried up and the combat became stale. The game was essentially over for me by the time you had to build the hyperwave relay thing. The biggest enemies (etherials, sectopods, cyberdisks) went down before they had a chance to do anything and I did it using half the fire power (ending stats screen) that the majority of people had.
In the end I feel like you had to be bad, like literally bad at the game, to feel the tension or get any satisfaction from the combat, which is all the game had going for it. The game was over once I had my trio of sniper ladies with squadsight.

Guess I just assumed despite this being the internet, the Giantbomb community had slightly more finesse. Especially on the subject of game of the year spoilers. I suppose people like you prove me wrong. Congratulations.

Literally the first comment for this podcast spoils the GOTY. That's a fucking bummer. And since the podcast was only out for a minute, the douchebag definitely just skipped to the end to make the comment. Sucks.

Yeah, and you're forgetting Valkyria Chronicles which is probably the closest thing to XCOM and that came out years ago and modernized the SRPG genre in a huge way (with a good story).
I'm at the worst games part, and they haven't mentioned the shittiest game of this year which is Revelations 2012 now that's some 0 star game right there.
