Anyone else really tried/confused about them crapping on Metal Gear when they all loved MGS4? I don't get it.

the exception of patrick as he said he didnt really like it and jeff says he only likes the even number mgs games.

yea its really confusing at least in relation to brad, considering he gave the game 5 starts and fought for it hard for goty.

I just listened to that GOTY recently. Hearing that and then their recent MGS talks... just baffling.

You bring up Brad and that's the most drastic swing, to the point where it doesn't really make any sense. Jeff is a bit on board here, but Pat and Ryan not so much... I don't know.

To me it's just MGS4 is so up its own ass and absolutely crazy that if you like it, you should just be down with MGS period, case closed. I say that as a fan of it, btw.

yea figured you were a fan, wouldn't be repping big boss in your avatar if you weren't i bet.

im with you on what your saying as that's part of why i like mgs, cause its soo goddamm crazy and i love their commitment to being crazy and taking their core story seriously,

it s just for some reason jeff says he never was interested in the big boss games. (thats crazy to me as mgs 3 is my favorite) something about the big boss stuff being more grounded in vietnam era being tooo crazy (do not know the exact reasoning) he's a little bit on board here cause of the fire horse stuff.

Patrick has said before he really liked 1 and 3 and rising and not 2 and 4, but he does get why people like that series as a whole.

Ryan never played any mgs games except for 4 and i believe 4 was his number 1 game in 08.

brad's sudden swing........ i mean look at this

id have to guess its him more objectively looking at the game rather than subjectively reviewing it (this was year 1 of GB, probably didn't fully develop their style yet)

To your point, GB does seem to "objectively" review at times (look at how Ryan reviewed AC III then kind of trashed it after last year).

But that being said... at GOTY time all that "objective" stuff is off the table and they were loving MGS4. So that doesn't fly.

true, they really did subjectively love that game during the goty stuff at that time.

such a weird shift that brad made in regards to mgs4,

someone made a good point to me also,

he also did this for diablo 3, he gave that game GLOWING PRAISE ("The first Diablo game in over a decade is also one of the most insidiously satisfying loot treadmills in almost as long.) and straight up forgot about it during game of the year.

so weird.

wow, thanks! You just spoiled Bioshock 1 for me! I stopped playing half way through 2 years ago, I was just about to pick it back up...

It's really a "I am your father" twist?? Lame, I thought it would be something better than that. So I dont' really care now

It's way more than that.

For the first time the Bombcast was right about MGS. There dosen't need to be anymore. The current series is tired and done. The storyline was wrapped up and any more installments are unneeded and stupid. Look at PW, it tells a pointless story, adds details that just crap on the the story, and is just a bad game. MGS4 was pretty terrible to, but whatever it ended the series. Making a story that just fills in the details for the sake of it is so dumb.

Bioshock Infinite is another overrated game where people just overlook the major flaw of it, the gameplay.

THIS GAME SHOULDN'T BE A FUCKING SHOOTER!

They took the easy way out instead of coming up with a new compelling gameplay style that played towards what they wanted to actually do.

I'm not sure I follow you. The game is a shooter and they wanted to create a story driven shooter. They did exactly that. At no point did anyone think this would redefine the shooter genre. People want to play BioShock games for their story and atmosphere.

I'm not sure why you expected something other than what it is. It's not like they pretended or wanted to create something other than what they did.

Also, it's not a flaw. The gameplay is just fine.

Sounds more like you don't want to play the game. You really don't have to give in to hype when you know a certain game isn't for you.

@euandewar: yeah, pretty much :(

God, I really can't stand the Giant Bomb guys talking about MGS.

They clearly aren't fans, which is fine, but when I'm not a fan of something or not interested in something, I tend to avoid talking about it at length.

Nails on a chalkboard for a metal gear series fan, seriously.

I've never been remotely interested in MGS, but as an Android user who knows a fair amount about the platform I think I understand exactly what you mean because no one on the podcast knows what they're saying when they start talking about it.

David Hayter's voice is not iconic.

Don't understand the hate for MGS3. It was the best game in the series and continuing that storyline seems to be what most fans want.

They were talking about it in the context of the Ouya, that thing you've never played. So maybe Patrick knows something about it that you don't.

And Android is a fucking mess with too many devices running too many different versions that make it impossible to easily program for. That's why shit doesn't come out for it at nearly the rate it does with the iPhone.

And I have an Android phone and an Android tablet.

Well didn't you just go ahead and make a bunch of assumptions of what I was talking about. I wasn't speaking about just this podcast or claim they were wrong about the Ouya. I didn't say anything about games coming out for it vs iOS. Your post was weirdly reactionary.

Can't think of many shows besides Star Trek NG that got better after dudes grew a beard. Maybe Cheers, when Kelsey Grammer grew a beard? Was it co-incidence that Frasier was the only character to get a spin off? Not really related, but Jeff Bridges got 100% more awesome when he bearded up.

Hmm. I think I'm going to hold off until I finish the game, even if it's supposed to be spoiler free.

PSA for Jeff on the TV front, specifically something to keep in mind when looking at Panasonic plasmas. In addition to the image retention that Ryan and Brad mentioned, there is a known issue in the 2011 models, possibly the 2012 models of "bright spots". Basically, after 6-12 months (depending on usage) 1-2 bright spots appear on the screen, mostly in the upper left quad near the middle and they DO NOT go away. They are most apparent when there is a white or black image on the screen. I believe it has to do with the backlighting but it is a common issue in Panny plasmas and Panasonic WILL NOT replace the screen if it happens. Granted, it is almost invisible while watching a movie or playing a game, same as the image retention, so it's kind of a personal thing if that would bother you.

Also, the image retention can get pretty bad if you aren't careful. I used to play L4D2 a lot, and during the first couple weeks I had the TV, I played a couple 3+ hour games and the white elements of the HUD were borderline burned in on my screen. I had to run the anti-image retention wipe bar for about 5 hours and then avoid playing any games for about 2 weeks before it finally faded. I have to say though, all that aside, the image is crazy good. IMO it's better than my old Pioneer Kuro 5020.

Don't fret, dude. I haven't played Infinite at all and listened to the podcast, and I still know zero about the plot of that game.

Yea the combat design is Bioshock Infinite is not great. While it's not bad I hope this isn't ignored during the GOTY time by people, becuase of the great story and world.

Did Brad kind of drop in a Bioshock Infinite spoiler by referring to blood noses? It may have just been a coincidence but I am up to a part of the story where that happens in game and then he mentions something similiar in the Bombcast. I'm ok with it but jeez did it make my ears prick up when I heard it.

EDIT

Seems reading through some earlier comments he didn't

Poker Night 2 is definitely coming out, the promo items were added to TF2 a while ago, but aren't accessible yet (obviously.) Those items may ultimately account for a fair portion of the game's sales.

Naked Snake doesn't consider/call himself Big Boss until the end of Peace Walker, and Big Boss wasn't voiced by Hayter in MGS4, so it makes sense "Big Boss" is not voiced by Hayter.

It makes no sense. Unless the guy voicing him sounds very similar to Hayter, except maybe more worn. Big Boss and his clone need to have the same voice, especially since Solid is the clone that resembles BB the most at least physically.

Before we start shitting on the Next Xbox can we at least have the decency to wait for the press conference. I get it PC is the master race if you have the money and Sony is so great now because the PS3 was shit, but Xbox 360 was my console of choice this last generation because it has some great games, reliable service and introduced a lot of innovative ideas to the console market.

Edited by kycinematic

In contrast to the GB guys, I am super excited for MGS:V. Hayter is my fucking hero, but things change. Voices change. If you were a cigar smoking badass and then you were put into a coma, hadn't smoked for 9 years, I guarantee you you're voice would change, too. Nowadays games don't excite me anymore, indie games don't reach far enough for me, and more often than not their "creativity" really just means rehashing the same shit I've played for the last 2 decades...but leave it to Kojima to make me give a shit again.

Well in MGS4 he was voiced by Richard Doyle, not David Hayter and he did go through that whole nine year coma thang. Not saying it is totally sensical, but I can piece together the logic.

Uh? They were just talking about what developers told them. Also it was not about the next xbox being bad, it was about the way MS handles the release of the next xbox. Also also: What has the PC or any other system to do with that? Nobody ever said the xbox was a terrible system. For the longest time it was the system of choice for most gamers including the GB crew. It's just recently that the PC has gained some sort of mementum again. As a PC gamer I vividly remember the days the GB crew downtalked PC's and PC gamers on the Bombcast.

Short of it: Chill out duder, nobody wants to spoil your next xbox.

The PS3 was most certainly NOT shit. It launched poorly, but Sony has done a lot of work to redress the wrongs the PS3 started with. Unfortunately, it was too late as many had already made their minds up about which console they were going with...including the GB crew. You may not like what you heard them saying about the Microsoft in this podcast, but you haven't had to put up with them slamming Sony up until the PS4 announcements. Go back to podcasts prior to the PS4 announcement and see if you can find one where Patrick has anything positive to say about Sony.

No doubt I'll be the fiftieth person to say this, but Breaking Bad got even more awesome once Heisenberg grew the beard.

I laughed so hard when he spoiled Bioshock 1! I think infinite is almost impossible to spoil in the same way as, for example, Fringe would be. You can say a couple of plot points or character reveals, but experiencing the experience as a whole was the point of the game for me, and although I had had a couple of specific things "spoiled", knowing them did not spoil the experience of finishing the game at all. I think one of them even says as much in their quicklook.

Basically, if you think you've been spoiled on Bioshock infinite, don't let it get you down, keep playing. You haven't.

The reasoning I've heard of, not that it's a good one mind you, is that Big Boss was a heavy cigar smoker while Solid Snake smoked cigarettes and not as heavily as his dad.

Really, the reason is that it'd be weird to hear David Hayter speaking to David Hayter in the same scene. Hayter as pretty solid range for a voice actor, but I could see how from a storytelling perspective you'd want to avoid the confusion of not being able to tell apart the two characters. Especially when Big Boss goes into his long monologue. Avoiding that awkward concept is good enough reason for me.

I was atleast hoping Richard Doyle would finally be Big Boss, too. He was great in MGS4.

probably not. they provide commentary over vinny's playthrough of the game and they react to what's on the screen, so it's pretty visual.

Why is 'knowing' the goty beforehand a bad thing(or at least expecting it to be a great game)? Vinny predicted ME 2 to be GOTY and Jeff thinks it's one of the best games this gen. Clamoring for surprises just 'cause seems silly to me. It's also hilarious to me that 'everybody' knew that Phantom Pain is a MGS game, but Patrick still hoped that it would be something different. Please contradict yourself more :P

Weird. Brad told the exact same story about being spoiled on BioShock in an '09 cast.

BioShock 1: Also, yes Jack was born in Rapture. You find a room in Fort Frolic that shows his mother dead and an audio log telling that Ryan impregnated her. He was tattooed with the "would you kindly" device then was taken up the surface, given fake memories, and was called upon when the game starts.

I didn't see much wrong with the final fight in BioShock. Guiding the little sister through the proving grounds wasn't great but the final fight was fine.

Agree with Brad about the Infinite combat. I honestly preferred the combat in the first one. Handling big groups was always terrible in Infinite.

For me, it's too early to call Infinite or Bioshock as the favorite, since Bioshock is close to my favorite game. I always dread the guide the little sister part gameplay wise when I play it (which I do once a year,) but my issue with the final boss is its absurdity, i.e. the cheesy design (see Mass Effect 2). It's a real moment of bathos in a strong and serious story.
