@slashdance: because they are exceptions. the phonetic rule (stupid or not) requires g followed by e,i,y to be a soft g. If you turn an acronym into a word phonetic rules don't change because the words they represent have different pronunciations. Besides I didn't invent them so I'll listen to the guy who did. Not people who are uncomfortable with gif not sounding like graphic (which is proper anyway).

This Xbox One always online every 24 hours thing is total fucking bullshit based on the fact that internet bandwidth and reliability in this country still isn't at a level where "wifi is everywhere" is a common ideology. I will say that yes, one day, we will have constant access to the internet and therefore this won't be a major problem, but as of right now and the next 5 or so years, internet is inconsistent as hell for a lot of people outside (and even inside) major cities.

And yes I know in this day and age a lot of internet junkies like us consider a 10 minute outage a near panic zone, I know that people have trouble connecting to the internet at all and have severe bandwidth caps that prohibit constant usage.

Hell, I don't trust my own AT&T internet to withstand much. I used to have Time Warner, and last year they had a weird Xbox Live outage that lasted like 3 days that prompted me to switch. Incidents like this could, and will, cripple things. Just look at Sim City for the most recent example of terrible always-online catastrophes.

Hmm I cant help but think you guys were too nice about the press conference.

I don't mean to bitch, but this presentation was clearly and profoundly mainstream US market, displaying features which will never even work where I currently live. Not only that, but the presentation FAILED to address any of the specific issues that had been commented.
As many of us have noted, the mainstream gaming circuit seems particularly stail, so putting your chips on this iterative, uninteresting, derivative mass media production seems like a terrible idea.

To me, it seems that as many companies overbudgeting to capture audiences that will never care about your product, they managed to alienate many of the people who actually consume their product currently.. They MAY correct this at E3, but at least for me this completely pushed me away from the system.

Also, Star Trek is so not "hard sci-fi". More than Star Wars? Sure, but that's always been proclaimed as a fantasy tale set in space. Star Trek is full of just as many ridiculous tropes and absurdities even if it is slightly more realistic with technology interpretations. Still not true "hard" sci-fi.

Ryan's pretty consistent affirmation that the WiiU will never be worth talking about is getting fairly tiring and distressing.

Also lol at them talking about Rare games as though software out of the current iteration of that developer is something to be excited about or equate with older great software of theirs

Edited by MeatSim

Mocap dogs! this changes everything! I am just glad the silence is over. Hopefully will see a bunch of games from them at E3.

Edited by Askherserenity

Woah. Surprised they went so easy on the One. It was making me feel kinda uncomfortable. Is most of the gaming press going to just accept all the bullshit Microsoft is doing? Feels kinda wrong for gaming and just wrong in general. Oh well.

Posted by Quarters

Surprised how tender they are with Microsoft and the conference, considering I've heard them rip stuff apart for way less before. Maybe they were just tired.

PS4 announced: Spend 30 minutes ragging on no backwards compatibility.

Xbox One announced: Spend the entire podcast glowingly talking about it.

Edited by Milkman

Love all the people in the comments wanting them to be out for blood with the Xbox One. Not everything that ever happens demands an immediate reaction of "THIS IS THE WORST THING" or "THIS IS THE BEST THING." We're about to see a whole lot more at E3 in a couple weeks. Let's wait a little bit before we declare that Microsoft is ruining (or saving) video games.

The art question's been one on my mind for awhile now, too. So many people saying they can't pay you for work, or flat-out won't, that you start worrying as a writer or artist that you won't be able to make a living doing what you love.

Yeah, they definitely didn't specifically say that the team is not comprised of the people who made the Rare games people care about.

That's one interpretation, I guess. Vinny and Brad said that nothing that was shown appeals to them.. so I don't know how glowing that is.

One of the most disappointing (or maybe confusing is a better word here) podcasts in a while, granted there was still likely some confusion over specific information that was later outed by the press while they were probably recording the podcast at the time, but comparing this with their coverage on the PS4 reveal makes me scratch my head. I am by no means eagerly out for blood for them to rip MS a new asshole, but I was expecting some fair criticism of what was presented. They really cut MS way too much slack. The conference was atrocious and they gave us nothing to look forward to. Go back and listen to how the bombcast reacted when the Vita and the WiiU were first announced.

They shat all over it. And rightfully so.

The thread on GAF is pretty spot on with the heavy criticism about this week's installment. I really wasn't expecting it to be so positive about the new Xbox, especially when so many people are against it and the internet is in more or less a proverbial outrage over it. This sudden strange optimism and uninhibited defense is a little jarring. It is a little weird.

The most confusing thing of all are these kinds of comments. I'm even coming at this from a well-biased PlayStation perspective, and to me, these guys sound more disappointed than anything else. Definitely underwhelmed. Hell, they spent the whole reveal crackin' wise about how boring it all was.

But little did I know, behind their sighs and apathy (and the reiterating of their enthusiasm for the Sony event), they were actually licking Microsoft's ass. GAF can't be wrong, I guess.

The most important part of this is Artemis. Showing this one-of-a-kind game off is so important, I am actually posting about it.

Space team to the most amazing level. A rear view shot of a couch looking at the main screen with couch laptops/desktops facing would work without necessarily needing A/V switching from each terminal. As a side note, iOS devices can also be used as terminals (To my knowledge).

I'm talking about the podcast, not the reveal stream. And GAF is by far the only board laughing at the Xbox One, look at any other online videogame websites' forums. Seriously. It's all over the place.

I feel like a broken record, but could someone please conjure up one of these mythical "wide audience" non-gamers that actually took time out of a work day to watch the reveal? I just can't wrap my head around it. I need to know if they actually exist or if it's just an attempt at rationalizing why the event was such a colossal dud.

@brighty: I just don't understand where the 'disappointment' comes from. The crew were clearly underwhelmed by the event, and had very little good to say about it, but because they're not just shitting over it in the style of an angry forum-goer, they've let us all down?

Microsoft did absolutely nothing yesterday to impress me, so I thought it was a total bummer too. Heck, I'm already ready to write the system off, since I can tell it's not going to be for me. But this weird lynch mob forming around everyone who isn't saying exactly what the rest of the Internet is saying is just... well, silly to me. But carry on. I realize I'm probably the weird one here, not wanting to hear pure cynicism.

They have let us down because the Xbox One is going to be good for the industry, but not the consumer. The consumer is the only one taking a hit on this new console and the crew are obviously not concerned about that. "Whatever, I don't buy used games anyway" seems to be the prevailing thought, but there are plenty of people who do and they are the ones getting left out in the cold.

They brought up a good point about the European market. They have the most to gain there but the presentation had very little of interest to most Europeans (EA showing off some FIFA was basically it).

None of the TV stuff works here.

I hate to be "that guy" but we don't really know that none of the TV stuff will work in Europe. I mean, the ESPN/NFL stuff, probably not. But while it may roll out at a different pace, or in a slightly different manner, I can't imagine that cable providers and boxes are so much different as to make it an impossibility in Europe. Being that Europe is the second biggest, probably soon to be the biggest gaming market in the world, I'd imagine that Microsoft is going to do everything they can do bring as much of that functionality to Europe as they can manage. Again, the complete functionality of both these consoles is still so vague and inconclusive, nobody should be counting either Sony or Microsoft out yet. I mean, we literally don't even know the launch line ups, final price, or release date of either console yet. We don't even know what the PS4 looks like yet.
